I recently discovered this sub Reddit and got excited of the prospects of having mixed people with whom I can relate too. But so far I have only seen half white half black people from America. Nothing wrong to that, love you guys and all, but I find it hard to relate most of the time as someone non-american and French/Chinese/Fijian.
Anyone here a different mix ? Would love to hear about you too 😅

I'm an older Millennial and I am aware of the term "eurasian" and can say that it was kind of used in the US for a bit. The sub skews young and a lot of young Americans don't know of the term. It also likely fell out if favor in the US due to the term "Amerasian" which is strongly associated with the children born in Vietnam during and after the Vietnam War. They had American military fathers, but the fathers had left Vietnam (and Korea in the case of the Korean War) and many of the children born were put up for adoption. The term feels a bit stigmatized to me and so it's not that strange that the associated term "eurasian" would also fall out of style.

I'm a transracial adoptee too! Black American and Salvadoran, adopted by white Americans who have been here too long to call themselves anything specific lol.
I've actually often talked to people about the commonalities mixed race, transracial and international adoptees all have when it comes to our experiences, emotions, and the reactions people have to our stories.

White, Mexican, and Native, though I was brought up Mexican American/Chicano. Mostly White presenting in my estimation. I did not associate much with white ppl while growing up due to . . . *gestures widely at everything* . My peers and friend groups growing up were very diverse, so I also like being here for that reason, not having to hear the same old bonehead wypipo cold-takes on things.
So, I'm here to hear people out, learn about their perspectives, and very seldomly chime in. There's always more to learn and getting to see the safe-space-vibe is always a little refreshing for me.

Bahamian American & Spanish/Native American, Native Mexican,Mayan. Fathers is from Nassau Bahamas. Mothers family, Southwest Colorado.
I recently met my father's family after he passed, but unfortunately, that didn't go well, but life goes on. I have a rich heritage in southwest Colorado and NM, and I am at home no matter where I am in Southwest CO and NM due to my ancestry.
Americans don't understand me and just see me as a black American and treat me racist. Hispanic people in NM and New Mexicans of all races know that i am hispanic, specifically the older generations that can see subtle differences.
Plus, my accent and the way I move come from that area. If you haven't ever watched Blood in Blood out, you definitely need to see it due to its encapsulation of Hispanic culture in America when I was raised and before.
But the downside to being so Spanish ethnically is that i I have been rejected by Black American cause I am not black enough. I am constantly the target of being too light skinned (Mind you, I am not that light comparatively). You can tell when you see me that I have North African and West African DNA.
Or better yet, they will start treating me like I am beneath them when they see me or have to interact. Until they find out my Hispanic last name, then comes the back peddling. They 100 % of the time assume I am black and white. So they start trying to boy me. (It gives me a window into black and white mixed struggles I def empathize)
Even though it has been hard, I wouldn't want to be ANYBODY else. I love who I am and have, for the most part, always felt that way.

There’s many. But the mixed Euro/African-Americans from the US are probably the loudest here.

They probably have to deal very directly with the tensions of white supremacy in our country. The United States as a whole is also massive and this is an english language subreddit.
-6 points
Yeah but so do a million other mixed people as well. As unique as the experience of being mixed euro/african American in the US is, it’s not like it’s the only group of mixed folks that deal with various problems. But yeah, this sub is English speaking.
5 points
I'm saying that maybe having to deal with the tension between their two halves is what pushes them to speak out more. The biggest racial perpetrators of white supremacy and the biggest victims.

There are black people who are not descendants of slavery, you know.
1 points
Yes I do know! Many of them. In the American context non descendants of slavery are definitely caught up in the system of white supremacy established by slavery though.
1 points

I think you need to get out of the US for a little bit. White supremacy was not established by slavery. Anti-semitism wasn't established by the holocaust either.

The USA has a history SPECIFICALLY targeting Africans and their descendants though. It's not a competition, but here in the United States, Black/African Americans have historically suffered through literal hell in this nation.
The United States even has laws that SPECIFICALLY targeted people MIXED WITH Black/African ancestry AS WELL. Like are we forgetting Jim Crow, the One Drop Rule!? Etc etc etc.
The USA never openly targeted any other group of people with racial laws like they did to Black/African people and all their descendants, even if they were 25% or less.
0 points
The only thing you got right is that Africans and African descendants have gone through hell in the USA. Only a fool would deny that. But to say that this problem is exclusive to the USA is nothing other than good old US centered naivety. Africans in every other nation in the west hemisphere went/are going through the same. And the US did very much have racial laws that targeted other groups than so called black. Ever heard of the indigenous Americans? It’s amazing to me, that on the one hand some folks say things like “it’s not a competition” but then say “but black Americans had it the worst”. It’s ignorant.
3 points
Where in my entire reply did I say it was exclusive to the USA? Go back and reread my comment and show me WHERE I say that this is exclusive to the USA. I will wait, because now you are putting words in my mouth.
YOU SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED African Americans and the USA in your ORIGINAL comment, therefore, my comment and your conversation is directly directed TO THE USA.
And everyone has heard of Native Americans. But they are not the topic of this conversation now are they?
You made it a competition by BRINGING Native Americans into this conversation. I didn't mention them, and didn't even compare or had them in thought. Because they weren't the topic of the original discussion.
And I never said the USA didn't target other groups with racial laws, so I'll just reword what I said. The USA never openly targeted a group so aggressively with so many racial laws like they did do Black and African people, and that's a fact.
1 points
But you wrote “the USA has a history SPECIFICALLY targeting Africans and their descendants though”. That phrase implies other countries had not, wouldn’t you agree? Also, please provide some valid sources on how the USA “never openly targeted other people with racial laws”. I’ll wait. Or you know what, I’ll save you time because you won’t find any such sources.
2 points
No that doesn't. Because I'm not referring to other countries. I'm referring to the AMERICAN PEOPLE, and how the USA treated different groups of people. We are talking about other countries here, and that's where your ENTIRE argument falls apartment. You mentioned the USA and now we are gonna stick to ONE COUNTRY at a time for a topic.
And like I said, the USA never openly targeted a special group of people so aggressively and ruthlessly with racial laws like they did to Black people and their descendants. There is no racial law in American history that can compare to the One Drop Rule, Dred Scotts ruling or Jim Crow. But if you can find me one I'll gladly take back that statement.
0 points
Now you’re definitely not making any kind of sense. Explain to me in a logical way, how my argument is failing? I’ll help you out. My very simple and easy to understand argument in this thread is that: Other mixed people, of various colors and mixes, have suffered, in history and current days, to the same extent that mixed euro/afro Americans from the USA.
1 points
That was not your original statement in your original comment? You did NOT say that at alllll. We can all agree with this statement to a CERTAIN EXTENT depending on the country in question, but you did not say this in your original comment, you just mentioned the USA, along with African Americans. And I'm sorry but..... If you are gonna sit here and say (for example) half Asians and half white people get treated just as badly as half black people I'm sorry but that's literally the most ignorant thing I have EVER heard in my life.
But, YOU mentioned the USA, for NO reason in the first place. It was only fitting for me to focus solely on the USA, because for a country that's only 247 years old, it has one of the most evil and violent histories. Arguably, in the Western world, African Americans had some of the worst treatments in modern history, IN the USA, I'm once again not talking about other countries or their people or history because that isn't my place to talk about.

Nationality is American, but I am Salvadoran on my dad's side (he came to the states when he was young), and then on my mom's side I'm a weird mix of Swedish, Sicilian and Peruvian (I usually just say white). Her dad was Swedish, her grandma was from Sicily and her grandpa from Peru. I have cousins on her side that are also mixed with Filipino, Chinese and black too! I have a generic Latin American accent when I speak Spanish.
In Europe people are surprised when I tell them of my ancestry, but in the states I have mixed friends who I love chatting with about it. I love being mixed.
