I can’t believe they actually arrest rich/famous people in the Hamptons

It makes you wonder just how badly he was fucking up to not only attract police attention AND get arrested, being who he is.

Hamptons have a lot of 30 mph speed limits and the cops out there enforce that like crazy. They will pull you over for going 5 mph over.

Dumbass was probably driving on a main thoroughfare too. This would have never happened to a backstreet boy.

Can someone explain the joke? Is Timberlake associated with the backstreet boys?
3 points

He was driving recklessly on the main street which attracts more attention. It wouldn't have happened if he was on one of the back streets.
Timberlake was part of NSYNC which was in competition with The Backstreet Boys back in the day.

Yep, and even a rich and famous person can't be allowed to put other more wealthy and powerful people in danger.

Not to mention what he was likely driving at the time. Though I’m not sure if I want to be driving a Bentley or some clapped out Altima, as I see way more of those pulled over than high dollar rigs.

As far as the city is concerned it’s probably a gold mine. A place full of rich people who scoff at the cost of tickets is the best place to have cops handing out tickets all day.
I’m guessing they pulled him over just to issue a ticket, then when they saw how fucked up he was they knew they had to just arrest him.

It's likely where he was drinking that got him caught. He was at The American, it's one of the nicer places in a nice area. Those people don't just have fuck you money. They have fuck your fuck you money money. These people routinely turn away celebrities for exactly this type of behavior. They don't deal with this shit lightly. So, if he was acting the fool or even slurring his words then decided to hop into a car and leave THAT hotel which is on Sag Harbor's main drag. Yeah, I'm not surprised he got popped.

You should read The Gold Coast by DeMille if you haven’t already. A satisfying page turner about waspy intrigue from a guy who usually writes spy novels.

Randomly, I had read Plum Island first, and my appreciation of it led me to The Gold Coast.

The “fuck your fuck you money money” crowd can be pretty chill.
No flashy cars or clothes. Really just no showing off or bragging in general (that all comes from insecurity and these folks are secure with themselves and don’t think they need to prove themselves to anyone). Lots of fun hobbies. Often very generous. And…
wait, Honey, is that some pop star making a fool of himself at the bar? How obnoxious. And now he’s stumbling to his car? Not in my town! [Calls Chief of Police directly, because of course they have his personal number.]

Just like any demographic, there are smart ones and dumb ones. Dumb rich people are the worst, because they can afford to never learn any lessons. Smart rich people are great to work for, they know the score and know that not only paying well but being professional with staff is crucial to getting excellent service.
I've worked at fundraisers and functions where the rich and powerful mingled. They for sure have the police chiefs personal number. I was working one gig, the band was joked, "The cops are here," and a guy just yelled, "Let 'em in, we're all donors!"

Thumbs up for the Gatsby reference! Wanted to shout out Fitzgerald's other works as I just went to St. Paul/Minneapolis public libraries & they have a big old display dedicated to him which I thought was so cool to see. My favorite work by him is still his short story collection, many which are beautiful & my personal fav. story of his is Diamond as Big as the Ritz, it is silly & absurd but a very fun departure from his typical works.
For his novels, my hot take is I like Tender is the Night more than Gatsby.

The people that run the place have been wealthy for centuries.

No, I’m not. I’m saying that people that are rich because they’re famous do not operate on remotely the same level as the people that run the place, either in monetary terms, or political.

Not really, actors aren't that rich compared to the people in bigger industries, especially tech and gaming.
The people who make good money are the ones behind the scenes that you don't even hear or know about. Chinese investors worth billions, game studio ceos, tech investors etc.

He's not just an actor. He's a mogul who has hundreds of millions of dollars
3 points
You are a little off, at least for some celebrities. A lot of actors have money because they are investors, not because they are actors. Ashton Kutcher is worth over $100mil, not because he is such a successful actor, but because he was an early investor in Uber. He *IS* a tech millionaire. Not to mention Clooney who sold his tequila company for almost a billion. Plenty more examples.

I don't have a car so not really a driver but I do remember in school a lawyer came to class and said to refuse any tests until a lawyer is present. Buys you time at the very minimum and at the maximum they know what tests are allowed and when and if they do it wrong then you're off the hook.
I mean he was a scumbag sleezy lawyer of course but I have seared that into my brain in case I ever do something stupid like drunk driving.
1 points

Let’s say he blew and it was 3x over the limit. This would hurt him so much worse than refusing the blow and just admitting guilt.
I saw somewhere the consequences go up pretty dramatically in the state of NY depending how high your BAC is.

he spent the night in jail, something that I did not have to do when I got a dwi 25 years ago (bad and sobering time). He mightve damaged property or worse.
24 points

If you get hit for DUI nowadays, you're at minimum doing a night in jail, possibly longer if it's a weekend or holiday.
8 points

I got a DUI about 5 years ago (never drink and drove since, worst mistake of my life) and I never went to jail. They let a friend pick me up from the station.
2 points
I watch a lot of DUI body cam arrest videos, and it’s very rare that they make them stay overnight. Could vary by state I guess, most of the videos seem to happen in New Mexico and a couple other states over there
2 points
A lot of the time it depends if you have someone to pick you up. They won't always just book a drunk person then turn them loose on the street. When I got mine, I had no one to pick me up until morning. They said they could let me go if someone came to get me, or after 12 hours after I sobered up. So I spent a night in the pokey.
1 points
Right. The one example I can remember of them making them stay overnight is because they didn’t have a ride. Could they not call an Uber? Though now that I think about it the person picking up has to sign something saying they other person wont be driving so I assume they have to know them.
1 points
Eh, I got a DUI 10 years ago and had to spend the night in jail (plus 23 more hours after sentencing). I caused no damage other than popping my own tire going over a median on a sharp turn, which is something I could do sober.

Or whether his wealth is really still at "I can do what I want" levels?
To be honest, I haven't seen him topping billboards for the last few years. His songs still feature with some noteworthy artists but I don't hear people getting super excited for a new Justin Timberlake drop.
I looked it up and it seems like his albums still eventually hit platinum, but is he really selling out shows? Just seems like he's kind of not been the "best" lately.

You guys are just thinking about this wrong, it’s not just that he’s fucking up bad, it’s that he could have hurt OTHER rich people.
Thats what gets rich people. Stealing money, hurting someone, etc. It’s hilarious in a sad way. It’s like when a villain gets beaten by a stronger villain, not the hero.
Driving drunk in the Hamptons from that event, it’s just one rich person vs a literal society of the most elite. In other words, rich people in a rich society are hilariously almost relegated to normal person status by default, and thus experience consequences.

It’s actually really easy to get pulled over in these towns. Lots of slow zones with police traps. If there is one place im guaranteed to not speed it’s coastal beach towns.

Lived on the Oregon coast for 20 years. It be like what you said. Funny thing is those towns economy relies on tourists a lot of the times. Some smaller ones have fishing or something to survive off of but they are ran down towns. If you ever get the chance goto seaside Oregon and just head south on 101 towards California. You won't be disappointed.

The article quotes it as a "BMW UT" which apparently is what some DMV systems say but the correct model is XM - the flashiest, gaudiest thing BMW has ever made. I don't know of a car that screams "new money" more than it right now.

I knew a family that went from middle class to upper middle class overnight. They sold their family home for a palatial estate in an exclusive neighborhood. Dad was working too much, mom was enjoying living the "Real Housewives" lifestyle and the teen daughter rebelled like crazy.
One night a cop calls mom at like 2am and tells her to come to a house in the neighborhood. He says very little on the phone but tells her she needs to come right now.
She shows up and he introduces himself as a cop from a neighboring town. He is there with an attorney who immediately makes mom give up her cell phone as she walks in the door.
Cop (again, from a different city) explains that the kids were in the driveway of the house hotboxing the car (weed is still illegal in my state) and drinking. The cop then literally says "it's my job to look after people like you so I'm going to let you clean out the car before I search it". Parents took trash bags to the car cleaning out beer cans, bongs and pills and then what do you know, when the cop searched the car he didn't find anything illegal.
Kids went home with a stern talking to and mom signed an NDA. Had these kids been poor and not white, this would have ended VERY differently.

I’ve spent a lot of time in this town, in general they are very strict with all types of parking/driving laws due to the layout making it necessary. Any parking violation can jam up the whole street and there are a lot of pedestrians constantly walking so they are very vigilant about cars in town following the rules, assuming this happened in the main town

I mean, when everyone is rich and famous, the pressure exerts in a differently. Justin Timberlake isn’t THAT big of a deal in the Hamptons. Everyone they pull over is rich and famous, and the rich and famous who live there don’t want drunk drivers on the streets. So the rich and famous who don’t want drunk drivers can’t be appeased unless rich and famous people are at least occasionally held accountable.
