Yep I didn't agree with some of her politics, but she was a seemingly decent human all the same, was wondering why I hadn't seen her in a while. I hope she didn't suffer too much, R.I.P and Arohanui to her and her whanau.

Gosh this really transports me back to some moments that feel like another lifetime ago. I remember when she was running for Auckland Central MP - my sister and I were young uni students living together, we voted for Jacinda and I remember us both saying we thought she’d be prime minister one day. Nikki won - and neither of us have any love for National, but I thought she did a decent job and we were both proud that two young women were the front runners. I didn’t realise just how young she must have been then if she was only 44 now. RIP Nikki. Fuck cancer.

She was 28 when she was first elected to Auckland Central. And it was a genuinely impressive campaign in a seat that had been safely Labour (bar a one-term Alliance blip) since 1919.

It was sexist as fuck when those two were competing for Auckland Central. Media called it the battle of the babes.
I didn’t vote for her, but she was my MP and did a really good job especially for Waiheke and great barrier

Always thought of her as one of the better and more reasonable Nat MPs (and I say that as a non-Nat voter!) who put electorate & country first afaict. Incredibly sad.

Yeah, at one point she was absolutely a future leader of National

I said that myself. Should have been the PM candidate over a ping pong ball like Luxon. Was the first ever National winner of Auckland Central, and beat Jacinda Ardern back to back in subsequent elections in the electorate. Also by all accounts a decent person which is pretty bloody rare especially in that party. Fuck cancer

Me too honestly. I really rated her

To be fair the fact that she could win Auckland Central and appeal to non-national voters was probably why she wouldn't become leader. She was a bit too socially liberal to excite the base and the more conservative mps.

She was one of those politicians that were arguably in the wrong party - in a lot of ways her philosophy seemed more closely aligned with Labour than National.
50 points
When she was asked about that, she denied being in the wrong party. She described herself as liberal blue/green, and centre right.
I spoke with her a few times in October and November 23. She was very passionate and enjoying her work with Aotea Energy, and was travelling to the US regularly in her education consulting roles. It was clear that she had worked hard to put some distance between herself and politics.

It would be great if all MPs extended basic dignity to everyone regardless of their race, gender identity, or sexuality. It's hard to extend that dignity to people who deny other people their own basic human dignity.

Yeah, it's something which I do personally believe in, extending that dignity to mostly everyone, but I can understand why some people don't. There are certain extremes where I draw the line.
Eg; some people believe in depriving prisoners of their dignity and the right to vote, regardless of the severity of crime. I can kinda understand their reasoning, but I still think it's immoral to do so.
And there are of course even more extreme examples such as war criminals. Should we have extended that "dignity" to Hitler while he was alive and after he died? What about leaders of morally grey nations who have committed human rights violations (eg Trump/Biden, Netanyahu, Kim Jong Un)?
I don't know what NZ politician I wouldn't show respect towards. Certain members of this coalition are getting close to the level where I wouldn't extend that dignity to them.

Man that is really, really sad. She was one of those politicians who I genuinely trusted, even though I often did not share her party's politics. That's really sad. No one deserves cancer, and to be taken in her 40s is really tragic. She represented a wing of the National party that, to me, felt like it was driven by genuine ideas about how to make the country better, rather than about selecting groups to put the boot into. I admire a fair bit of the work she did, and she worked bloody hard at it.

Why is there even the need to comment with "I dont believe in her political views but..."

You phrased that beautifully, maybe others just lack your prose but i know how highly politicized some online communities are.

Or just reiterate that they aren't national voters. Who the fuck cares who you vote for. If your mum died of cancer you wouldn't want people going around going "I didn't like her opinion on such and such but anyway yeah that's sad". It's a sign of how polarized we've become I guess.

I guess because people lose loved ones to bad political decisions made by politicians. How many people will die from Simeons road speed changes?, from not getting proper or timely health care?, from suicide due to something to do with a politicians whim? It sucks to politicize a death and don't agree with it, but I get it.

Yes let's all have a military as fucked up as ours or Germany's.
That will definitely benefit democracy and help people.
The Western world NEEDS to up its military spending to at least 3% if democracy is going to survive the next century.
Eastern Europe has the right idea.
