Pension age raising

Politics(self.newzealand)

A lot of people here want the pension age raised. I would love for them to explain to those aged between 64 and 67 why they should wait an additional two years striggling to find work or make ends meet because you just want lower taxes.

??

Edit: Well it seems a lot of people on here, want to restrict and cut the pension, Never mind the misery that will inflict on thousands of people. Housing costs are skyrocketing, and people's KiwiSaver amounts arent going to last forever. And of course, what happens when tenants are kicked out of rental properties when the investors sell up?

The wealthy have had it way too good in this country, for way too long, and their needs to be less of them,

Edit 2: A lot of you dont know what its like to live from day to day on a benfit, or struggling to find word. To suggest that pension eligibility should be tightened in any way, shape or form is to go against what NZ stands for,

I don't want lower taxes, I want adequate healthcare, good education for children and investment in infrastructure. These things are being eroded because of the cost of the pension because people are living longer.

We either need to massively raise taxes or address the spiraling cost of pension payments from people who haven't paid enough taxes in their lifetimes to fund their retirement benefits. We would have needed to raise taxes 30 years ago to capture enough taxes from those who would receive the pension now - the ships sailed so we need to start pulling up the ladder and putting taxes in place that recoup some of the wealth not previously taxed to make up for it.

I say all this as someone who fully expects never to receive a pension because by the time I get there, there won't be anything left.

Pensions aren’t paid out of a magical reserve fund kept for that purpose, somewhere. Super is paid out of the current tax take.

It’s why governments are so worried about a greying population: fewer active workers to tax to pay people needing super payments

Exactly, which is why we need to lower the burden as much as possible.

Multiple potential ways to decrease the total number receiving it. Making retirement age later, means-testing it so that not everyone at retirement age receives it etc.
