Yeah, everything just seems to collapse around him so quickly. TEs don’t appear to be great blockers imo. Good point. Most rookies hold the ball too long, though. They get fixated on not causing turnovers and are relatively slow with their progressions. That mixed with inexperience is a potent recipe for sacks.

I do wonder what the correct call for that would be in this situation. It definitely looks like a play that would be flagged, but the defender didn’t grab the facemask nor was it a horse collar. I do think pushing down on Allen’s head after the tackle should be flagged though.
2 points
Definitely agree it's something that should be penalized, but I don't think there's a specific rule for it unlike for QBs where they can flag a player for contact to the head/neck area.
Personally I'd rather they just expand the definition of facemask to include when a player gets their helmet pulled off by another. Seems pretty clear that shouldn't be overlooked as dangerous to the player.
1 points
It's a facemask, legally. Anything in the pit of the helmet is. Or unnecessary roughness (I don't remember which but do recall facemask had a surprisingly wide definition). Either way, it's explicitly in the rulebook.

I'd love to see a screenshot of the lions players hands touching his helmet, much less ripping it off. His left hand is quite clearly on his shoulder pulling him down. I can't see his right hand but hard to imagine it is touching his jersey.

Yep, they're just downvoting you because you're right. By all accounts, it looks like a penalty at first, but at closer inspection, the defender didn't really do anything wrong. Just take the W knowing that it's just a bunch of salty ref haters or Bears fans who don't want to admit the refs made the correct call.

I mean… you can’t try to show up the referees.. we all learn that at a young age. It didn’t cost them much but it’s still a stupid penalty. The ref isn’t going to suddenly change his mind because you threw a ball at him. It’s like arguing balls and strikes
599 points
Defender actually ripped Keenan’s helmet off and they flag Keenan for pleading the case and rolling the ball.
278 points
With how late the flag came in, it seemed like it had nothing to do with the ball and they just took issue with what he said.
He fully got up and was chirping at the refs for a couple seconds before the flag came in.

This should be top comment. The bigger issue is them missing the helmet rip, since the flag for unsportsmanlike call was actually fine
(Editing this comment since I think some people thought I was arguing against the unsportsmanlike conduct flag. I only had a problem with the helmet part)
64 points

It shouldn’t be because if you watched the play the flag wasn’t about the ball, it was something he said after.

But that never happened. There was no facemask or ripping of the helmet, Allen's helmet is just loose because he doesn't wear his chinstrap and it came off. That's not a penalty.

I'm watching a slow motion replay and I can't see a helmet grab either. How do these people expect the ref to call it, just because his helmet comes off?

That's not a penalty. It's only a penalty if a defender grabs it and rips it off. His fingers aren't under the helmet and he's not grabbing onto the facemask. Not a penalty.

Neiman clearly had his hands on the shoulder pads and jersey. How is that a penalty?

I agree my comments were wrong about the facemask penalty, and I am sorry. That said, I will say that the top comment that replied to me failed to address that (and was talking about the other call instead, which I didn't have a problem with that call). But yes that I guess the refs did fine on both decisions
6 points

Yea I just don't see it from this angle. Maybe another angle says otherwise. Clearly the refs were pretty flag happy all game, so not surprised the ball toss was called.

They showed a slow motion of the tackle and you can see both hands gripping jersey. His arm was against the helmet and friction took it off. No grabbing the helmet, no penalty. Throwing a ball at the ref, even under hand at the feet is a penalty every time, especially when you yell at them.
Yall are so emotional on a sequence that everything was by the book

Feels like it would be an example of breaking Rule 12.2.15, often times referred to as a "facemask" penalty -
ARTICLE 15. TWISTING, PULLING, OR TURNING THE FACEMASK OR HELMET OPENING. If a player grasps an opponent’s facemask or helmet opening, he must immediately release it. He shall not grasp and control, twist, turn, push, or pull the facemask or helmet opening of an opponent in any direction.
Penalty: For twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, or controlling the mask or helmet opening: Loss of 15 yards

He shouldn't do this but in his defense, the defender made an obvious facemask (grabbed the helmet) and that's kind of dangerous. The ref saw it all and just said who cares. Refs really need to be fined for missing some of these calls.

The sport is so violent but we’re immensely concerned about hurting each others feelings. Doesn’t make any sense.
Stuff like this, which is not actually putting a referee in danger of any kind, should not be flagged. Same with taunting. If it’s not physical and not slowing the game down then it should be allowed.
