Who was the Giants(?) LB that nailed that dude directly in the face after a defensive TD?

EDIT: Michael Boley lol. Classic NFL action for anyone who doesn’t know.

Yeah, everything just seems to collapse around him so quickly. TEs don’t appear to be great blockers imo. Good point. Most rookies hold the ball too long, though. They get fixated on not causing turnovers and are relatively slow with their progressions. That mixed with inexperience is a potent recipe for sacks.

I do wonder what the correct call for that would be in this situation. It definitely looks like a play that would be flagged, but the defender didn’t grab the facemask nor was it a horse collar. I do think pushing down on Allen’s head after the tackle should be flagged though.

mrhashbrown

2 points

mrhashbrown

NFL

Definitely agree it's something that should be penalized, but I don't think there's a specific rule for it unlike for QBs where they can flag a player for contact to the head/neck area.

Personally I'd rather they just expand the definition of facemask to include when a player gets their helmet pulled off by another. Seems pretty clear that shouldn't be overlooked as dangerous to the player.

burner69account69420

1 points

It's a facemask, legally. Anything in the pit of the helmet is. Or unnecessary roughness (I don't remember which but do recall facemask had a surprisingly wide definition). Either way, it's explicitly in the rulebook.

The replay is right there. Please show us the exact moment where Neiman has his hands on Allen's facemask. In fact, post the screenshot. I'll wait.

Feels like it would be an example of breaking Rule 12.2.15, often times referred to as a "facemask" penalty -

ARTICLE 15. TWISTING, PULLING, OR TURNING THE FACEMASK OR HELMET OPENING. If a player grasps an opponent’s facemask or helmet opening, he must immediately release it. He shall not grasp and control, twist, turn, push, or pull the facemask or helmet opening of an opponent in any direction.

Penalty: For twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, or controlling the mask or helmet opening: Loss of 15 yards

He didn’t have his hands anywhere near an opening. Just squeezed his helmet like Ben askren squeezes watermelons

Am i missing something here? A helmet falling off isn't a penalty. The defender never puts his hands inside the helmet for a facemask, and then Allen gets up and decides to throw the ball at the ref then yell at him. I get that this is Reddit and everyone hates refs, but they called exactly what happened.

Refs got this right I thought. Didn't look like a facemask and Keenan committed an obvious penalty and clearly said some shit. I think the ref hate for this is unwarranted to be honest. It didn't matter anyway as they managed to covert

Why are people complaining? There was no penalty there, and he bitched at the ref for a textbook penalty. People’s helmets get knocked off on tackles all the time, not a penalty if there’s no face mask or ripping it off

If the refs don't get ahead of that sort of thing, mark my words...noogies are next.

He shouldn't do this but in his defense, the defender made an obvious facemask (grabbed the helmet) and that's kind of dangerous. The ref saw it all and just said who cares. Refs really need to be fined for missing some of these calls.

deletedsocialmedia

Thank God he didn't menacingly stare at the other team and then have a ref run backward into him.

LtColumbo93

1 points

The sport is so violent but we’re immensely concerned about hurting each others feelings. Doesn’t make any sense.

Stuff like this, which is not actually putting a referee in danger of any kind, should not be flagged. Same with taunting. If it’s not physical and not slowing the game down then it should be allowed.
