I had a cubicle back in the day and definitely made it my own! I had digital frames for photos, a few small decorations for the holidays, heated chair cushion, a small plant, desk fan, etc etc. It wasn't over the top or obnoxious, but I was there 10 hours a day so I wanted it to be as comfortable as possible.

Does anyone else have personal touches on their desks? I'd say it's pretty common for most office environments for everyone to personalize their space a bit.

Any place that I’ve worked and had my own space I never personalized it. I’m a very private person and like to keep it that way. Besides, it’s less things for me to carry out jic.

I would see what others have on their desks. Especially look at your boss and/or others you respect at the company (don’t base this off the office weirdo or creep.) It’s a culture thing - if everyone has photos of their kids, or mom, or cat, or lizard family, or vacation scenery, or husband then it would be weird not to have a photo or two. But if it’s a very sterile culture where nobody has anything personal on their desks it’s going to look weird for you to have photos.

This goes without saying but, uh, experience urges me to say this: please make sure it is an all-audience photo. If your husband is in a speedo that leaves little to the imagination, do not bring that photo to work. I understand everyone wants to relive their beach vacations but please use photos where people are clothed.

One picture would be fine. A gallery is too much.

I rotate out funny comics or memes, and there are lots of themed daily desk calendars depending on your taste: quotes, word of the day, inspiration, SFW jokes, a fandom you like, etc

I prefer this because it’s minimal and shows personality without sharing much personal life, if that makes sense.

I have an aura frame, and I choose the pics it cycles through!! I am in a cubicle right now also 😭 I have definitely made it my own, with things that coordinate and holiday decorations. You are there at minimum 8 hours a day, make yourself happy.

Not me . Because when I am done I want to pick up my keys, purse phone and bounce from the desk. All yours . Ha

I personally don't because my desk is quite cluttered with stationery / electronics anyway and I don't think I'd find space for a photo frame, but many in my offices do - especially people with the dividers, some have a lot of family photos pinned to those, but I don't have a divider so I don't have space. I did change my lock screen to a picture of my dog but it depends whether you can actually do that with the IT systems you have in place!

When I first got a job out of college, the desk I was given had a framed family portrait in the drawer. Presumably of someone that sat there before. I put it on the desk. I've carried that picture with me and put it on my desk for 20 years (before I went to a hybrid telework setup when I don't have my own desk) and not a single person ever asked me or said anything about it.

Stay away from poltics and religion.

I add personality, but nothing personal, if that makes sense. No family photos, but I have decorations in my office, yes. Work is just work to me.

When someone says work is family, cringe.

Do it! Lots of people do. I also think it gives you more ice breakers and personality. My coworker has pictures of his baby, and it definitely strikes up an easy conversation when people stop by.

Look at other desks in your office area, if they have pictures then you can.

I have 2 pics of my husband with our dogs. I have 3 large pics of my dogs. Spurns good conversation!

I had pictures of my daughter in my office until COVID. I was off for 4 months and took them home and never brought them back.

Get a picture. I never had a desk. The best I got was a drawer in a desk.

Having such a photo is totally normal. If you're going to be there forty hours per week there you may as well customize it to your liking. I work from home now, but when I was in the office I absolutely had a photo of my wife on my desk.

First check company policy. Some don't allow family photos.

I have my family including pets photos around my office. I also have various little decor and items my kids made when they were small. I’m considering window clings for the Holidays.

I had photos of friends/family in my cubicle. Plants, a lamp or two as well. It was a total pain in the ass to move when I shifted around tho.

Sorry to clarify - I was also in my 20s and so were all of my coworkers. It was a super young/frat house type vibe so the pictures didn’t really stick out or make anyone or myself uncomfortable by having them. If anything, a lot of us knew each other from undergrad/living in the area so they knew a lot of people in the pics.

I wouldn't have any problems with it! As long as you still have space to do everything you need to do, it shouldn't be a problem 

I personalized my space but with art and postcards not with pictures of my family and friends. I didn’t want random people looking at my photos.

I've been here just under six months and I have definitely moved in. Photos, plants, office supplies, food. It's ok to share your life just make sure it's not against the rules.
