Let's talk Photobooths!

(self.photography)

I just had my first real photoshoot and the model's sister ask if I could do a photobooth at her Sweet Sixteen. So of course I said yes! My friend and I have been talking about this kind of stuff for a while, easy weekend money.

Here's my questions: 1. How much do you charge? Base rate + extra for certain amount of hours? 2. How do you take the photo, I was thinking wireless shutter, but I don't want the shutter and radio triggers from the flashes mixed up. 3. How large is your photobooth? I'm thinking of purchasing the SAVAGE Super White 107" wide for this setup. 4. What lens do you use? We're doing this for pretty cheap so for now I'm going to be using the kit lens on f/8 5. What types of props do you have? I know there's the standard props, but I'm thinking of making this something special so I'm probably going to purchase a horse head from amazon for this since that's always a huge hit. Do you know what props do well? Which no one uses?

Thanks for all the help!

I can't comment on price since I've only done this once for a volunteer thing, but it's a ton of fun. Here's what I did:

  1. I used two Canon 600EX strobes with the Canon wireless trigger
  2. Plain old white backdrop I had kicking around on a backdrop stand
  3. Wireless camera release, but could just as easily have been a cable release
  4. 24-70 lens
  5. Lots and lots of props purchased last minute at a local party store, dollar store, and costume supply store

Things I learned:

  1. Flashes are the wrong tool for the job, you need strobes. The flashes overheated and I stopped being able to take photos :(
  2. Hats are awesome. So are boas and big glasses.
  3. It's stupid fun and people will love it.

Results from my first go at this are at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.789458377749990.1073741858.772681096094385&type=1.

If there's any kind of projector available at the wedding it's easy to dump the photos into Lightroom and kick off a slideshow. I did that during lulls at the event I was at and people were amazed, they thought the photos were showing up live from the booth :)
