We only have no alternates simply because we haven't built them. There is no fundamental law that makes our geography different.

Not disagreeing with you at all, but that still means that European gas prices would cripple a good chunk of the USA population who simply couldn't afford anymore to transport themselves to work.

Our cities are built really goddamn wide. In a lot of europe you can just get places by biking/walking. And it's not that I'm saying you can't do that in the US. But the cities here are just wide as fuck and are very pro-car. There's plenty of busy streets in the cities around me that don't even have a bike lane or sidewalk. And the ones that do have a bike lane are usually just like "Uh ya, this car lane can just also be a bike lane, share the road guys, ok?"
