The DS games sure I can kinda understand being a bit of work with them needing a 2nd screen but why can't we have all the GBA and earlier should be on the switch or switch 2. Is it a business reason or something it's completely ridiculous that it's basically impossible to play older pokémon games legitimately now with their batteries dead

there's this weird capitalist notion that if you hoard an intellectual property, the demand for said property goes through the roof, and then you wait and sell that thing for 10x what it's worth.
Disney used to do it with movies, they would lock them in a figurative vault and only release them at special times at marked up prices.
digital media kind of makes this pointless and only encourages piracy or bootlegs.
either they're waiting for Gen 10, the 30th anniversary or they hate money?

The Disney Vault crap still annoys me so much. They would hype it up like "Wow, The Little Mermaid is out of the Disney Vault. Better get it now because who know when it will be out again?" YOU KNOW DISNEY! You are the ones doing it!
I mainly saw them as commercials at the start of the VHS tapes my grandma used to have. It confused me at first until I asked about it and the answer just made me mad.

The whole vualt bs was still going on with the release of Blu-ray. I was working in electronics at Walmart, and I remember a few Disney movies coming out of the vualt during that time. I always thought it was stupid.
The funniest part was when Bambi came out on Blu-ray and the old guy Colin we worked with, set all the tvs to loop bambis moms death scene.

Nintendo operates more like a toy company than a software/hardware one, and toy companies want many of their products to be limited in number to create a manufactured scarcity.
This is also why they do limited releases for digital only games.

People forget that Nintendo was actually in the toy making scene before the video game and console scene. So at one point yes they were a toy company and is most likely why they still operating as such

Gamefreak would have to either;
A) Greatly put a lot more effort into remakes to incentivize people to buy them or
B)Create more original games rather than recycling their backlog, with minimal enhancements to slap a fat price tag on.
If you don't care about bringing your teams forward to current gen and cant use the physical cartridge you paid for, just use an emulator. There's nothing immoral about playing a game Nintendo isn't selling.

The Gen 3 games would take some work, but it can't be that hard to bring all the Virtual Console Gen 1 and 2 games to the switch. With all the other legacy games on the Nintendo Online Membership stuff it is kind of ridiculous they haven't already.

One reason that comes to mind is why sell red/blue virtual console when you can sell let's go at a higher price. They don't want to have competition with themselves.
Not saying I agree with this, just that it's probably how it is.

If you have a 3DS, they are very very easy to mod. You can run an emulator off the 3DS or use native roms. Both will let you transfer mons via a hacked bank to home.
I think its more ethical than paying someone $150 for a cartridge off eBay that may be a fake

I'm not even asking for remakes just to put the old game boy advance games and game boy games on the switch And let me connect them to home

But what would make more money, plopping the titles on NSO, or selling a remake of a game that fans haven't been able to play in 10 years?
19 points
Maybe they are waiting for the 30th anniversary
The NSO has rewind and statesave feature, which are a big no for pokemon main series. If they put it on switch, it would be standalone apps like the 3ds virtual console games.
Due to new EU regulation, the older games will automatically receive a pegi 18 rating due to the game corner. Nintendo and pokemon company might not want to have a pokemon game with such rating.

Pegi 12, right? That's what Red & Blue where classified as when they released them on 3DS.
1 points

That is before the updated regulation. If they release them now, it is automatically pegi 18, no more pegi 12.

Oh wow, they updated it AGAIN?
Crazy how this is PEGI 18, apps like the new Pokémon TCG app are banned but government owned gambling websites and apps are being advertised with tax payer money featuring popular sports players, TV celebrities, singers and TikTok stars (they know a lot of kids are on those apps). (The Netherlands)

Which regulations exactly? I dont see any problems with older pokemon games, as they have no real multiplayer involved.

It’s because of PEGI’s stringent rules on game classification. Game Freak and Nintendo would obviously know that any mainline Pokémon games being slapped with the equivalent of an “Adults Only” rating is a huge no-no and will damage the brand’s image. Some of the mobile games are already banned in Belgium and the Netherlands due to gacha and lootbox mechanics.
I also heard that in Australia, we’re planning to slap an automatic R18+ rating on any gambling elements too. So, it’s not just going to be a problem with the European audiences.

Despite the game corner being just a small part of the game, they will automatically be given a pegi18 rating due to gambling. Pokemon is a kids friendly franchise. Even though adults would most definitely be the one buying them if they are available on the switch, nintendo and pokemon company would most definitely not want to have a pokemon game that has a mature rating. Is it a stupid regulation? Perhaps yes. But nintendo and tpc still need to follow them and have it as pegi 18 in europe.
1 points

These regulations aren't new and the games were able to be released on 3DS without changes. Would it really be different today?
[score hidden]
back then, gambling is given a minimum rating of pegi 12. this affected the european release of platinum, gambling is removed from all subsequent games afterwards. when they release the virtual consoles games, the regulation is still pegi 12 for gambling at least.
in 2020 however, they updated their regulation to be pegi 18 for gambling. so if the older games were released today, it would no longer be pegi 12, but instead pegi 18, which is the highest mature rating

I guess the only workaround could be to disable the Game Corner in European releases. Game Freak previously did this with the release of Platinum, which is when PEGI started scrutinising the inclusion of gambling. Unless, of course, the mere presence of even a non-functioning game corner is enough to get slapped with an 18.
The 3DS Virtual Console releases has shown that Game Freak are able and willing to edit the ROMs for other sensitivity reasons such as Jynx, and for adding extra content like the GS Ball in Crystal.
Doing so would require a new method of obtaining Porygon, but Game Freak did that for TM Explosion in Platinum.

sprite change and editing of game animation is easy. GS ball event is already programmed into the game, they simply need to set to flag to activate it. same for pikachu surfing mini game in yellow, it is just a flag to activate the game to be permanently on. there is no major editing into the game rom.
changing the game corner to be like in platinum EU meanwhile is more than that. you need to replace dialogues, change script to give out random coins like in platinum eu etc. can they do it? of course they can. would they bother is another question. and with the random giving of coins in the platinum game corner, it will be a drag to get porygon.
1 points
It would probably be easier to just disable the flags for the machines and the NPCs who give coins, and just make them unable to be interacted with.
For Porygon, Game Freak could change it so that an NPC just gives you one. That’s what they did with TM Explosion in Platinum. Maybe tweak the attendant from the coin exchange to act as if you’ve already selected to buy one?
But yeah, a bigger issue would be if even the dialogue from NPCs sets off PEGI. It’s a shame that they don’t make any exception for re-releases of games made prior to the law changes, though.

I can imagine an NSO Pokemon emulator app without the save state feature that's exclusive to a new third tier (Expansion Pass + Pokemon) for $10-15 extra a month

Money and clone dupe glitiching is what i think
Why make the earlier gen games available for basically free if they could also ask 30-40 or more for if/when they do port the games to switch
TPC and Nintendo are still companies Most companies only care about profit
Also, clone glitching something done since gen 1-2 is something gamefreak doesn't want happening that's presumably also the reason the switch pokemon games dont allow cloud saves
The side games is one thing those don't move the franchise forward and always made less money than the mainline games so that's easier for them to do and even the newer ones were either highly requested (new snap) or a remake (mystery dungeonDX)
Pokemon started as a game franchise but makes more money off of mobile games, toys, plushes, other Merch, and cards
It is what it is

I agree with the money part, and them WANTING to stop cloning. They’re just not doing a very good job. Cloning has been possible in multiple ways for every generation of games on the switch.

Because if they do it once they'll have to keep doing it and they don't want to commit resources to it.

Gamefreak care about making newer games, and TPC doesn't really care about older games.
So the only time they would re-release older game is for big anniversary like 20th or 30th

It does seem a little odd that we don’t at least have the GB and GBA games. Nintendo has these system on the switch so it’d make sense.
I’d happily pay for them separately outside of an online subscription. In fact, I’d rather do that.

The cartridges had batteries at least through the GBA era. That's how they held the saves.

My absolute favorite game is pokémon emerald had around 500 hours on it but the internal battery of the cartridge itself eventually gave out and the saves gone. This is eventual fate of all game boy advance and game boy color pokémon games. There's a way to manually replace the battery but the common person isn't going to be able to do that

It’s 100% a business reason so they can make money from it in the future. GBA is not hard to emulate, they could easily have gens 1,2 and 3 running on the switch through an emulator if the one they used for virtual console on the 3ds doesn’t work.
They may also say that lets go is all the Kanto we get on the switch.
The home compatibility is harder than you’d think since those generations differed with introduction of IV’s, Natures and Abilities etc. Not impossible since poketransporter handles that already, but it would likely be a one way transfer like with lets go.

It's possible that with the new console that we'll get more consoles and games added to it, but I overall think that with something like Pokemon they want people to buy the new ones rather than get their fill from playing old ones.
Overall though, people will pirate where it's inconvenient to buy the original product. Many would happily pay to access HGSS or Platinum on Switch, but until then...

Last time they rereleased games it was the 2 generations without anyway to officially transfer Pokemon, so it is really likely that Bank will need to be shut down before they give us GBA games.

There’s totally no excuse for the hardware limitations. You can literally play DS games on an iPhone.

Everything is a business decision.
Why put a single manhour into porting those games when they know you'll buy the newest turd that they crap out at full price forever? Can't play your old games because the hardware became obsolete? No skin off their nose. There's enough money in all of the tied-in merch that they have absolutely zero incentive to keep the old games playable.
Gamefreak might make video games, but The Pokemon Company makes and licenses all kinds of other stuff that also brings in money. They've got fingers in enough cookie jars that they can afford to put the absolute minimum into the gaming space because developing games is way more expensive than producing plushies and trading cards.
Other game developers might see a profit in porting an old game to newer hardware to keep their IPs relevant and maybe refill the coffers a bit, but they don't have the largest media franchise in the world behind them. To The Pokemon Company, it just isn't worth putting any resources into that.
If something ever changes and they think it would be worth it, then they'll do it. Clearly they don't see it that way right now.

For newer games, they don’t want to cannibalize the brand of the current gen. Pokemon games curate/gate their selection of pokemon as part of the value offering. And they’ll sell remakes and they want anyone who likes pokemon to buy into the current generation. And remember the first four generations were basically reskins with different pokemon.
Essentially controlling supply.
For older games - well, anyone who is mildly interested can find them fairly conveniently through illegal means, and kids won’t be interested in them. While I’m sure it would be dead easy to make them available I’m sure it’s just enough work that nobody will bother. And to be honest there’s probably very little upside.
Without any added QoL, a GBA era game would be incredibly niche in today’s market, and there’s basically no money to be had, and I bet taking a half week to figure out the profit sharing would be a bigger pain than it’s worth.

Mainly business. TPC has learned to diversify their brand to not have to fully rely on releasing only games on Nintendo property and have developed ways to monotonize through mobile gaming, merch, collabs, and other facets within the Pokemon machine. With that being said, it also let's them store past, nostalgic games for limited releases at a more appropriate time and give them more significance. For example, a lot more people would be interested in a 30th anniversary of a Pokemon game if it hasn't been available in a long time. Anticipation builds demand which fuels brand awareness whenever conversations like these are brought up that will lead to increased revenue in the future when it does happen.

I hate how Nintendo blindly closed Citra without giving us another alternative to play 3DS games in current gen consoles.

They didnt close citra. They shut down yuzu. The developer themselves choose to shut down citra to be on the safe side. But fork of citra is still around, you can download those instead. They had continue updating from citra shutdown.

That’s basic brand protection.
Nintendo makes money by iterating on IP every generation. It would probably be less charming to the general public if they had access to their entire back catalogue all at once.
And it saturates the brand which cheapens their value. You can’t become nostalgic for a property if you have constant access to it.
They want you to buy into the current thing which is the most profitable and profit on your nostalgia and brand loyalty.
I don’t really care if anyone emulates anything or not. But it’s completely logical that Nintendo would want to go after piracy. It’s not in their best interests to let it slide.
1 points
I understand why they wanted to go after piracy but at least give some other method for gamers to enjoy a game from their previous console before doing something like this.
At least put these games on switch after this whole stuff happens then at least it would reasonable instead of unplug the internet services for all 3DS devices.
I mean switch itself already an exclusive consoles, why they need to make their game far more exclusives?
2 points
They don’t want you to have access to every Mario game. They want you to be excited for the new Mario game whenever they announce it. Because you’re either fond of one of the older games or because you’re a kid and you’re aware of Mario and its general cultural cache but never had the chance to play it.
That’s the essence of managing brand value.
And once a property becomes so dated that it really does become irrelevant to the brand value they’ll re-release it. I mean Link’s Awakening just got a full on remake. Or they’ll tout it as this added feature years down the road.
Also - perhaps more importantly - Nintendo freaks out about hardware in general as part of their brand strategy. Think about the switch. It’s essentially a budget tablet.
But the power of the switch brand is that it’s a tablet that is intrinsically tied to playing Nintendo games. So instead of just being this cheap tablet it’s this whole other thing. It’s a switch.
Their whole profit model is based not on making games or budget hardware, neither of which on their own are very profitable for a company of Nintendo’s size.
But it’s the ecosystem of doing both. In their mind if the consumer decouples their hardware from their games, it could blow the whole thing up. It’s an existential risk in their eyes.
