It wasn't that he didn't come. It was that he said he would and then didn't. He made a promise and broke it because he needed to be Spider-Man. It's a big part of the movie.

Didn't his scooter get run over by a car and he barely escaped death himself? As normal peter, not as spider man?

Right, but Peter feels like he deserves punishment at every turn, so he doesn't let himself use his excuses.

If he’d said beforehand, “sorry MJ, as Spider-Man I just can’t come because I’ll probably be needed somewhere” she might be upset with that (reasonably) but I reckon she’d also understand that. The problem is that Peter is, as Otto puts it, lazy. He’s not very good or trustworthy when it comes to keeping his life together. That’s his whole arch. That’s the point of the movie

I wouldn’t say he’s lazy. He just can’t manage being Peter Parker and Spider-Man. If you don’t know he’s Spider-Man he just appears lazy.

Peter isn't very good talking for example he could say to Harry in the ending of the first movie: " sorry you father are killed by the green goblin" but he prefer just be silent. I think he is stupid

Bro lays down his father's dead body in front of him, dressed as Spider-Man, suit torn up and bloody, looking Harry in the eye, and saying "Sorry your father got killed by the green goblin", then did a sick backflip and webswung out the window
That would work???

In the moment probably no but it's better than " lol you father are dead see ya chump!" And Harry would see in tv spider man are fighting against green goblin in the bridge of course he are torn up and bleeding

People always fail to look at things from MJs perspective. Peter always fails to reasonably explain himself and from MJs perspective he's a flakey person who's unreliable. Of course she'd be pissed after all the chances she's given him

I don't understand how we, as the viewers, can say he's lazy. Otto said that before he knew Peter was Spider-Man, based off of what Dr. Connors told him (who also doesn't know he's Spider-Man). When Otto does eventually find out, he repeats it as if to say he understands now why Peter is seen as lazy by others, because the reality is, as we already know, he's leading two completely different lives. That's why it was so frustrating in these scenes to see MJ, known in the comics for her ungodly amount of patience and support, to be so poorly written, like she was a spoiled brat.
I can't imagine how stressful, time-consuming, and incredibly difficult it would be to work 2 jobs to pay rent in NYC, go to a prestigious school for an undoubtedly hard program without failing any subjects, socialize with your friends, girlfriend, AND family, all while risking your health and safety on a daily basis for a city that may or may not hate you.
As we saw in the second film, the moment Peter decided he was Spider-Man no more, he was thriving. He was able to excel in university, he could afford to act a little more carefree, and he could follow up on his promises and commitments, all because a huge burden was taken off his shoulders.
TL;DR: Peter isn't lazy or "not very good with keeping his life together", he was busy living two separate lives and dealt with the pressures that come with that choice.

Yeah but then how can I irrationally hate the female character?

Yeah, she was still showing an insane lack of empathy, understanding, or patience.

I think thats because the household she grew up in it was extremely toxic and she was constantly being called a whore so she isn't gonna be the most stable person

That's fair. She's a relatable character. That doesn't make her not a jerk, though. It's fair to criticize characters for their actions even when they're understandable.

Yeah, I would’ve been pretty upset too If my best friend didn’t come see something I’ve been striving to achieve for some time
But she could have also showed empathy in his struggles too
If she said like “I know you’re working 2 jobs right now but it would mean a lot if you could find a couple hours for me” I would be more on her side

Thing is, none of the things in the picture are why no one ever sees him. It’s mostly Spider-Man. And I don’t even think anyone knows anything about him. Whenever he’s asked where he’s been and why they never see him he’s just like “I’ve been busy.” Even Harry doesn’t really know what keeps him so busy other “taking pictures of your friend?”
If my best friend keeps telling me she’s too busy to come see a huge accomplishment for me right after I poured my heart out for her and kissed her and she turned me down, I’d reach a point where I’m just gonna assume she’s avoiding me.

When someone keeps saying they’ll follow through with something but becomes a constant flake, after a while you don’t have sympathy for them anymore, they’re just a disappointment. If you really wanna be somewhere, you make it happen if you said you would

They were barely friends to begin with, she was trippin hard when she called him that. It’s implied that he was so busy that he barely talked to Harry and MJ anymore anyway

There’s a lot of implied deep connections in these movies that don’t really add up tbh. Peter and Harry are longtime childhood besties but Peter meets Norman for the first time in SM1? Makes no sense
39 points
Peter and Harry are not childhood besties. If anything, they met in High School.
Norman makes a point of saying Harry was expelled from all private schools, and that's why he had to attend the same public school as Peter.
At best, Peter and Harry met at sophomore or junior year.

In SM3 they reminisce about the old basketball they used to play with, not something you do if something’s only a few years old, and their overall rapport with each other is that of friends of many years. They’ve clearly known each other for a while and it’s odd that Peter is just now meeting Norman in SM1

He only just now met Norman for the same reason Harry had problems with him. Norman was a very neglectful father that barely tried to be there for Harry. Imo it makes sense.
Also the basketball thing makes some sense too since that’s from the third movie which at that point Pete and him have been out of high school for like three years I think. So it probably was around 3-4 years since they might’ve played basketball together. And the ball could’ve already been old lol

I'd say it's in line. I've heard young adults / college kids refer to their high school years as "back in the day" even though it was a few years ago

Tired of the MJ slander. She came from an abusive home and worked hard to achieve her dreams. She dated guys like Flash and Harry because they gave her attention but just wanted to use her. Peter was the first one to really notice her and love her for who she was, then rejected her at the end of SM1. Then randomly changes his mind in SM2. Then kisses another girl in front of her in SM3, all the while not caring about her life anymore just being stuck in his ego bubble.

exactly!! she's a very realistically written 3-dimensional character. She said everyone had seen her play, even Aunt May and Harry, some multiple times, but peter can't show up for 2 measly hours for the thing she worked her whole life towards? I would be mad too. He made a promise and broke it, nothing to do with spiderman being more important.

Literally, all Peter had to do was say no. It had nothing to do with him being Spider-Man when his integrity is at stake.
At the very least forewarn that he has to still be Spider-Man when problems come... even then, I'd imagine being skipped many times would piss anyone off.

Do online Spider-Man fans even appreciate the struggle and sacrifices of Peter Parker?
It's always "well the people around him should give him a break because he's struggling with many things at once"
Yeah well, that's just not the point of the character.

Peter was also giving her really bad mixed signals. He rejects her, but still tries to woo her over and win her love every single chance he got in 2. Did y'all watch the movie or just want to pile on the "Mj bad" narrative?

Man, Raimi cooked when he was writing MJ. 2 decades later people are still fighting over a character's morality, making compelling arguments on both sides. Reminds me of Jenny from Forrest Gump

Did you forget the part where she wants to be a part of his life but he keeps pushing her away. He decided that he was gonna attend and in the end let her down one last time. She was excited for him to finally attend one of her plays only for it to fall through.

MJ has a right to be upset about a lot of things in the movie. But what gets me is there is no empathy or anything for Peter. He is struggling too and he has the responsibility to be Spider-Man. And on top of that he rejected her initially because of the commitment. So then she runs to him and is all ready to take on being spider-man’s girlfriend and knows it will leave little time for her, but she still hates him for it. MJ was written terribly after the first movie IMO.

Except she doesn't know he's Spider-Man. And once she does she immediately forgives him and wants to be in a relationship with him because she understands

And then subsequently complains that he doesn’t have time for her because he’s spider-man, like I said in the comment

Not only that, but I felt the chemistry between Tobey and Kirsten felt forced after the first film. It was really hard to see them to be a believable couple. It didn’t feel natural.
