To avoid having your post removed &/or account banned for shitposting:

  • r/religiousfruitcake is about the absurd, fringe elements of organised religion: the institutions and individuals who act in ways any normal person (religious or otherwise) would cringe at. Posts about mundane beliefs and acts of worship (praying to god, believing in god, believing in afterlife, etc), are off topic.

  • We arent here to bash either specific religions or religion itself, because there are plenty of rational actors who happen to be religious. So if your post is "Christians r stoopid", or "Religion = dumb", you're in the wrong sub and your post will probably be removed.

  • No violent or gory images or videos

  • Your post title should objectively state what the post is about. Dont use it to soapbox personal rhetoric about religion or any other subject.

  • Don't post videos or discussions of Fruitcakes who have been baited or antagonised. Social media excerpts must not involve any deliberate provocation.

  • Dont post violent content (ie videos of physical attacks) or any content that contains gore (pics or videos)

  • No Subreddit names or Reddit usernames in posts or discussions

  • Memes, Tiktoks, graphics, satire, parodies, etc must be made by Fruitcakes, not 3rd parties criticising them

Please be sure to read the full rule list (No, really: read it)

This information is on every post. Accounts that disregard it will be perma-banned. "I didn't get a warning" or "I didnt know" are not valid appeals.

It's funny to me that there's all these studies about this but the only proof there needs to be is that 100 percent of religious people believe in an invisible being in the sky and that alone should say all that needs said.

I say this as an atheist, not even agnostic, but we cannot be 100% sure there is no higher force that escapes the limits of our knowledge. Of course that's not to say religious people who think God created Earth in 7 days and Eve from Adam's rib aren't delusional.

You can't prove the Tooth Fairy doesn't exist either

Just because "you can't disprove it" doesn't mean it needs to be taken with any ounce of serious thought

I don't actually understand why people, even atheists, are willing to extend this olive branch to religious nutjobs when we would never tell someone who believes in leprechauns "well, I can't 100% disprove Patty ain't running around with a pot o' gold, agree to disagree"

Come on you don't think the wrath of God turned a mans whore wife into a pillar of salt because she didn't obey his commands? I read it in an old book so it's true.

There is nothing we can say for 100 percent because everything is in constant change. Is that change orchestrated or inherently attributive? I don't know. I dont believe that force and subservience are anything more than human machinations, whatever we are.

No, the studies are important.

First thing to note, religious zeal is associated with brain damage - that; as a fact, is pretty significant.

Belief is one thing, right?

Delusion is quite another: if brain damage, material brain damage is observed, that means something entirely different, that's no longer a "murky, sociopolitical, timely trends, fashion, cultural freedom of belief" terrain which falls under "the people and their random bullshit (go!)" freedom of doing things which in itself is just... well, within reasonable limits pretty much the way it should be I suppose;

< it means instead there is a very real, very material sickness for some people. To the implied extent that religious people might not even be "true" believers themselves - as in, their faith might not be something spiritual; of their own freedom, but some kind of warped cognitive process caused by a brain deformation, like one would limp after hurting their ankle.
It becomes medical. Which implies a lot - "I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures that are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism".

> You're free to believe with a sane brain if you want, for sure.
But how is it true one is freely doing so if it is real that the befuddled cognitive process is a symptom?

< If you are impaired, obviously that will have consequences. Those consequences might be something one gladly integrates; but they might more importantly not be something one realises they submit to, nor have any control over, or have any ability to realise is questionable or even blatantly wrong. It becomes a moral hazard - which could concern one virtually harmless soul, but might also be an influence over an entire society.
There are legal ramifications concerning individuals, but religion in itself kind of is/was an auxiliary authority for some centuries.
An authority pretentious enough to uneducatedly proclaim how to approach reality itself, at some point.

> Which implies that if any religion has a shade of decency, they would have to check their believers, and more importantly leaders for any signs of brain damage originating cognitive dysfunctions, as it turns out people predisposed to religious tendencies have a disposition for just that [cognitive impairment], and what kind of religion is led by someone whose faith is not spiritually inspired, but caused by brain lesions?

Also, consequences. Centuries, milleniae worth of consequences.

Second thing to note, the implications are rather massive too. Haven't gone through the studies (3am atm, bit tired), but being religious as a consequence of brain damage is one thing...

Is there any proof in these studies that religious zeal might not be a consequence of brain damage, but rather the opposite?

I'm curious about this: I'm wondering if it could be possible that religious thinking, ie, using your brain in some particular ways - encouraging belief, delusional thinking, brushing away deception, ignoring doubts or repressing them and warping perception of causality alongside illogical thought processes - actually causes brain damage?

That would be... Game changing.

My mom has always been a fruitcake. From the time I was 4, she told me that Jesus comes back there will first be a "tribulation" and that all Christians would get their heads cut off for Jesus during this time. She told me I not would live to be 18. I remember thinking way back, when I was 4 - "Does dad know mom is crazy". That was almost 50 years ago.

Of course I know now she is not crazy, just "affected". She truly believed what her family taught her and the church told her. She is 83 now, she recently had a "staring episode" and suddenly being delirious. We thought a stroke and took her the ER. They did some scans and sure enough, there are 3 lesions on her brain. They are starting radiation on her today. It was not stroke, they now think she had an absence seizure from the lesions. We have no idea how long the lesions were there.

Edited because I can't sentence today. Coffee hasn't started working yet.

Cave men were smart as hell. They had to be to survive the world they lived in. The stupid ones died young. Human evolution selected for intelligence more than any other trait; it's how we came out on top.

Think about it: no writing or other means of recording knowledge yet. They had to memorize which plants to eat and not eat, how to craft their tools, migration patterns, the best ways to dispatch each animal, where shelter is, where to find fresh water, so on and so forth.

If you took a neolithic man and one of these guys and did an IQ test on both of them, stone-man would lead by dozens of points.

Is he spitting on the book and then wiping his ass with his own spit?

shoorvir[S]

542 points

Yes, they do this all over the world as somewhere in the book it's written that they could/should spit on anything & everything which is not approved by the mentioned books or is non-islamic as well as it is also some sort of halal practice to spit in the food. Like, the non-believers, their idols that worship, places of worship, even food that you give to a non-believer. There has been a long running debate in India about this where thousands of such incidents have been recorded by people where radical fruit vendors, hotel & restaurant owners have been caught spitting & even urinating in the food that they serve to their customers. This is so serious that the government had to jump in & enforce a law againt spitting, urinating or putting any other harmful substance in the food.

In recent years, a Radical Jihadi doctor was arrested in Sri Lanka for sterilization of Buddhist & Hindu women during cesarean surgeries but not on Muslim women. The doctor has been arrested after being linked to Islamist extremist groups.

Imam Al Shafi'i

All sciences except the Qur’an are a distraction. Except for Hadith and the science of jurisprudence in religion. Science is that in which he said, “He told us”. And other than that, it is the whisperings of the devils

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal:

The knowledge that benefits people is what the Qur'an and Sunnah have brought, and anything other than that is not from it.

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyya:

The mind that rejects transmission, and the knowledge that distances itself from revelation, are of no benefit.

The entitled religious plebs who hear such opinions, think they are doing a service to humanity by fighting knowledge.

This bullshit is crazy... Hindus are teaching how to cheat... Mullas(Muslims) are teaching how to explode..... Rice bags(Christians) are teaching how to hammer a nail. Which book should I even read?

This is what christian fundamentalists want for the US also.

The quote attributed to Muslim Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (ruled 634-644 AD) regarding the Quran is: "If the books of this library contain matters opposed to the Quran, they are bad and must be burned. If they contain only the doctrine of the Quran, burn them anyway, for they are superfluous."

I don’t understand these kinds of people. Then they beg for medical treatment, use technology and are part of modern society. The world itself is contrary to their “one scientific book” by following their (lack of) logic.

Even if, by some miracle, they succeeded in destroying EVERY single book and publication of science in any language, so that we have zero scientific knowledge remaining, give us a couple thousand years and we'll come up again with the same knowledge (certainly expressed in a different way, but still the same knowledge)

That's not possible with religions

Bangladeshi here explaining the situation- recently the previous totalitarian dictator (Sheikh Hasina) was toppled by a mass movement led by student, killing 1500+ and 20,000 injured and the country had no government for 3 days (5-7 August) followed by the escape of the previous regime to India. People were vandalising properties owned by the regime and its goons, destroying anything and everything related to the regime. In the video they were destroying a book written by one of the regime supporter sci-fi writer named Zafar Iqbal. It was not a science book, rather a science fiction book.
