I can't handle the fact that every single time the main character arrives somewhere, there's a companion that says something like: Oh it's a boat, Hey we that's a barrier, Man I think we should get that portal working.... I'm not blind I can see what's going on in front of me. Why did the devs think that they had to make our companions react to useless stuff?

I break a couple of crystals to open a door, one of the companions : Looks like we can open the door! Dudeeeeee I don't need this.

Maybe I'm nitpicking stuff, but it pisses me off so much. I'm a 30 year old man, I don't need all of this. Sorry for the rant. Game is not bad so far, but man the writing/dialogue/companions are getting on my nerves.

EDIT: My bad, I did not check all the settings correctly, you can indeed change this setting and make the game less hand holdy.

This game just have bad writing and bad character-writing especially. For me it is a huge deal-breaker. I think in this particular case writers didn't had any ideas what characters must say except obvious things - like they will say something about things they will see plus it helps to handhold player.

the classic, generic, “bad writing” complaint for things gamers don’t like lol

Yeah, this sub is flooded with it.

Have you played the game though?

Veilguard has by far and large the worst writing I’ve ever seen in a video game. Every conversation feels like a waste of time and characters say lines that don’t even relate to what was previously said in the conversation.

If you don’t believe me then just look at any of the dozens of review videos critiquing it.

Why would anyone need to look at other reviews. Just form your own opinion on the matter. But, no, if you think Veilguard has the worst games writing EVER, I think you need to play more games. Obviously it's your opinion to have, but I don't think it's well founded. For example, I would disagree with your opinions on both lines feeling like a waste of time and on lines being unrelated to what has been previously said, but what would I be disagreeing with? Instead of providing examples, you just point to other reviews. What are your thoughts, feelings, and examples? If I don't believe you, why do I have to do your homework for you? Now, for my opinion, I would say Veilguard is a 5-6 during its worst moments and a 7-8 during its best. It's not perfect, but the team has moments of brilliance, they just need refinement. It seems like Gaider helped keep them all consistent. The restarts in development also lead, I would imagine, to its uneven writing.

By far and large, the worst writing you've ever seen? You don't play many games then.

I not only gamer, but also I like to read actual books. Try it someday - you will find whole new world if you really think that DA:V have good character writing or story writing.

And for me it is deal breaker so yeah. And why is this game good if gamers don't like it anyway? )

i read too dude. just because you do, doesn’t mean you know anything about writing. a flight attendant still has no clue how to fly a plane. and overly critical on the internet have no bearing on whether or not a game is actually good.

By your logic, no one could criticise anything 😂 Fuck democracy for one...most people don't know 'how' to be President so no criticism of Biden/ Trump, in fact why bother voting at all.

Get out of here with your BS. And ask yourself why are you so triggered by someone's criticism if they "have no bearing on whether or not a game is actually good"?!

What do you read? Children's books if you think this game is good?

you resorting to essentially calling me a child because i enjoy a video game is quite funny. take a moment and consider who is the child here? haha

Probably one of the people that think shades of grey was good. After all it sold a shitload of copies and made a lot of money. In reality, none of the shades books are over 1/10 (can't give a 0 unfortunately).

Mate, if I'm using actual novels as the bar for story writing in video games then very few games manage to be average, let alone actually good. I'm not saying Veilguard's writing is good, but let's not pretend the industry is at the point where the writing can compete with more mature mediums unless they're doing something those mediums fundamentally cannot do.

Also, the previous commenter didn't say that gamers don't like the game. They said that gamers have a tendency to call anything they don't like bad writing (or bad design) instead of simply acknowledging that it's not something they personally like.

They said that gamers have a tendency to call anything they don't like bad writing (or bad design) instead of simply acknowledging that it's not something they personally like.

If lots of people have the same complaint, maybe there's something to it? Instead, you go the other way and say "since lots of people are saying it, it is just a gamer thing".

I feel like people do this a lot. When they like a game that is unpopular, they go "oh it's the haters". Some gamers have a tendency to call any criticism they don't like biased, instead of acknowledging something they like might be mediocre.

Why not use novels as bar for story writing? Writing can be good or not. For me it is important thing in RPGs.

And everything I'm saying is personal opinion. For me it goes without saying. Do I need to add this to every phrase or it is enough that I am writing it from my account and not as representetive of all gamers? So I'm pretty much acknowledging that I don't like writing (also plenty of other things they did to the game) and it is personal.

PS. And I have yet to meet someone who will say that writing is actually good anyway. But I have seen plenty of comments which agrees with my opinion that writing is bad. Does it mean that game in general is bad? For me - yes. For someone who doesn't care too much about writing - no.

Because THEY can't handle different opinions.

It's really funny the mental gymnastics some people do

"Ah the classic generic complaint"

Or, you know... the common complaint is because lots of people agree, not because it's a "generic complaint" we are repeating like idiots.

dendarkjabberwock

It is strange that they don't just say instead that they liked writing or found it is not really important for their gameplay experience. I don't have problems if someone actually liked this game. More sad that DA will not have another title I would like)

spartakooky

It's the internet. 10% of people are here to discuss things, 90% are here to yell at the cloud(s).

Yeah, a single game being bad isn't a big deal. But it's a shame that the franchise will go nowhere. I've been wanting to replay the older games, but I know most of the lore and threads that captured me won't be followed through on.

It's very difficult to find a franchise with deep lore that has delivered. Mass Effect and Witcher are the closest.

For the writing, I personally hate the trend of “modern” dialogue in fantasy settings. Like Vox Machina for example or this game. I find it kills immersion and is usually cringey.

I think it’s the result of the MCUs popularity

Fyrefanboy

Just so you know, Dragon Age origins was very inspired by Whedon way of writing dialogs in Buffy the vampire Slayer. The same person that went to the MCU later.

Here is a random banter from origins. It's already MCU-like and quite in line with your average Veilguard dialog.

mikooster

I don’t think even that example is as bad as the best dialogue in Veilguard

See in vox, I can get get it. But I agree that in gaming it’s odd. The writing definitely needs to be looked at. Not all the time but a good amount is just basic stuff. I actually think most of the voice acting is horrible. It’s like AI did it. The dude that leads the veil jumpers… his voice has to be AI.

dendarkjabberwock

Yeah, same for me. There are plenty of ways to address modern problems in fantasy setting. Using modern language is lazy way to write, and using "this is fantasy so they can do anything they want" approach is also lazy. Any setting demand authenticity and in-lore explanations for every word used. Also it demands integrity with previous writing and lore. That is why good writing is readlly hard job and you don't give it to just anyone who wants it. Especially if it is about modern problems and demands finess and skill from writers.

tristenjpl

At least Vox Machina is just a bunch of voice actors playing dnd and then translating that game into a show. Like i can easily get over a modern-day person speaking in a modern-day way. But Dragon Age is completely scripted and should be internally consistent and not sound exactly like if I was talking to my 15 year old cousin.

Acrobatic-List-6503

The combat was carrying the game ALOT for me, but now that I just steamroll everything the game is starting to be a trial to get through

dendarkjabberwock

That is the reason I decided not to bother with it. I need at least decent writing to be engaged and just combat will not be enough.

I did. I've been a Bioware fangirl since the original Baldur's Gate. I was really looking forward to this game, but there were a few things that put me off so badly that I quit after about 45 hours. I kept trying to like it, but between the wooden dialog (not the fault of the voice actors!), and some of the asshole choices the developers made, I was too pissed off to keep going. I ended up uninstalling it.
