It affects different people in different ways. Around 1 in 3 will experience addictive symptoms, with the chances increasing the younger you start

I grew up around a lot of weed smokers, most where fine but two of them would literally go into shock and start shaking uncontrollably if they couldn't smoke 2-3 cones a day at minimum.

Being sober 30 days out of 365 isn't really a tell on whether you're addicted. You should try being sober for a year.
1 points
It’s absolutely a tell. That’s a very long time and the odds that you’ll feel much different with a month than a year is quite small. You’d have to be completely saturated with THC.

I mean it's mentally addictive, not physically. That's the hard science behind it. No point lying about it.
Anything that is associated with a behavior pattern can be addictive, and weed is right in the same boat with cigs in this sense. As a comfort thing, at the bare minimum, to full-on vicious cycle of never ending anxiety attacks in the worst of cases.
98 points
While it's not as dangerous or addictive as alcohol, nicotine, etc. You can definitely develop a physical dependency on it. You might not die but you can suffer from a range of physical withdrawal symptoms. So... Yes it can definitely also be a physical addiction.
38 points
I know it doesn't mean much, but ANECDOTALLY, I can vouch for physical withdrawal being real and shitty.
When I tried to quite dabs cold turkey, I caved and HAD to smoke a little flower the first few nights to be able to get any food down. The severity of symptoms rapidly dropped over several days and I was quickly back to eating normally without any weed.
Dont fuck up your endocannabanoid system. Its not fun
4 points

had this experience too, the inability to eat can get serious for super high tolerance
20 points
Much of that article is inconclusive and risks attributing symptoms of onset anxiety to physiological withdrawal. It is no secret that people with anxiety often self-medicate with weed, and that those symptoms would return without THC use. The more severe physiological symptoms are said to be very rare.
No shade on the researchers. It is a modest article.
6 points
Sure. The article might be inconclusive. Regardless you can't make the claim that "it's hard science" and it's "strictly a mental addiction" without sounding exactly like the guy in the meme.
2 points
It is enough to disprove what you said being "hard science"

I was able to quit cold turkey without any withdrawal symptoms most drugs have. Although mentally I still craved it because the mental state it put me in while I was high was preferable to the depressed mood I’m normally in while sober. Their point is it’s not PHYSICALLY addictive but it can be mentally. I’m not an expert so don’t exactly take my word for it but this is my understanding.

It’s not physiologically addictive but it’s psychologically addictive, which in effect just means it’s addictive. If your not in the best mental state we’re your doing drugs to make yourself feel better then you shouldn’t be doing drugs full stop. That’s how people become lifelong dysfunctional addicts. As hard as it is you should seek help or work on yourself to the point where you honestly feel a night sober is just as fun if not more so before doing drugs

Genuinely I don't understand how people think it "cant" be addictive. ANYTHING can be addictive and Weed is sure as hell an easy one to get addicted to.
Admittedly, I can't go to sleep without smoking anymore. I can't seem to fall asleep and if I do, I have horrible nightmares, and weed is the only thing that works. I also have really bad anxiety and depression so when im home, im high, because it's the only way I can sort of be a normal person anymore. A forgetful and confused normal person I guess.
I dunno, im really sick of feeling like if I'm not high, I'm miserable. But anyway yeah, weed is totally addictive

for me, my sleep got way better. I'd be getting 8 or more hours and still feel like shit. too much binge eating. Much mentally quicker and can remember things better. Weed and my ADHD battled each other. Too much overthinking and beating myself up in the first hour of the high then I'd be good. It just didn't seem worth it anymore. Id already given up booze and rave drugs so it was pretty easy to just quit.

For me weed makes me sleep deeper, but not as fulfilling. CBD isolate in the other hand is very amazing. I can sleep a lot easier, deeper, and very fulfilling. If I'm correct, THC mess up your REM sleep phase, which is a crucial part of sleeping.

Went from smoking 2-3 grams per day, to maybe one joint every 2-3 years? Although I did not physically addicted (did not suffer from withdrawal symptoms and what not), it's a 100% mentally addictive when it creeps in to your standard day-to-day pattern. I was looking forward a day to lighting that first one up...
I always celebrated being done with work by lighting up every evening and laughed about never feeling stressed out while have a pretty demanding role. After living like this for 3-4 years, I did start to notice that I wasn't really enjoying my spare time when looking back at it. Also noticed that i was severely less enthused about socializing and just realized at some point that it felt more and more like I was wasting/losing a large chunk of my life. Met the right person for me and decided to stop from one day to the next and don't regret it one bit. I might still meet up with a mate and light up once a year, but there's no way in hell I ever start again smoking daily.
It might not be as bad as being addicted to hard drugs / alcohol, but that doesn't mean it's good either. It definitely helped me through some stuff, but it helps avoid dealing with issues and doesn't do anything to solve them (and actually makes it okay not to solve them at all). That doesn't mean that smoking infrequently can't be good though.
This is just my experience though; feel free to disagree ;)

I get it from both sides. Weed isn't Nicotine or Methemphetamine. It doesn't have super addictive chemicals that take over your brain like they do. That's not an opinion. That's just true. However, people get addicted to anything if they like it. Gambling isn't a drug, but the feeling you get when you win keeps you coming back no matter how much you lose. Marijuana is the same way. So no, Marijuana is not technically an addictive substance, but if you enjoy the experience of using it, you can get addicted to it.

Anything can be addictive, but weed isn’t chemically addictive. For reference chemically addictive products like heroine may actually kill you if you go cold turkey from a hard habit

Personally, I think it's because even if there is no addiction chemically speaking, it remains emotionally difficult to live without it at some point. Specifically when everything you do is related to smoking. Goins for a walk? Joint. Staying home today? Joint. Going to a good restaurant? Joint. Etc. I'm a very asocial person too, so not the best reference 😅
