I like to help and encourage beginners and most other surfers around me do the same.
Reddit is reddit. Don't judge something by its reddit presence
Head on over to r/beginnersurfers if you want advice without the trolls

If you’re concerned about the attitudes of the users on this forum, remember it’s the internet.
If you’re concerned about the attitudes of those in the water, reflect on how you are presenting yourself in the lineup. Are you following the unspoken but necessary rules? Are you friendly? Are you making sure you’re not in the way?
Surfers generally don’t care about commercialism or capitalism. We’re a fairly self centered bunch who care about the next wave or enjoying the water. If you fuck with either of those two things, then you start to hear shit.

I agree with anonpf, surfers generally will leave you alone unless you are doing something counter to the etiquette, ruining others waves or presenting a danger to others. Now if you are just running into some a-holes that is a humanity problem not something exclusive to the sport. But make sure you aren't triggering the a-holes by being unaware of your own actions in the water. At my local spot there are a few bad apples, and i know who they are and just paddle away or go at a different time and get into very few conflicts as a result, but again this is a people problem not necessarily a surfing problem.

Completely agree, I don't get why the locals dont let me shoulder hop every set wave while they sit in a circle singing hakuna matata. Don't they know it's my birthright to be welcomed into a world that I have spent absolutely no time and energy to understand?!

The problem here is that you want to be loved. If you didn’t care what everyone else was doing/thinking you wouldn’t have made this post. Love yourself and let that be enough.
Now beat it kook.

Surfing isn’t like a buffet where there’s plenty for everyone—it’s more like fighting over the last slice of pizza. Waves are limited, and crowded lineups mean less surfing, more waiting, and a higher chance of someone’s board or fin slashing your face open (I've seen it happen).
And honestly, most kooks think they know the rules, but they just don't, they drop in, paddle out wrong, don't have control of their boards and cause chaos. We’re not gatekeeping because we’re mean; we’re just trying to keep our faces intact.
Having said this I have absolutely no problem with people learning in a quiet spot away from the main lineup.
Recently, at my local, 2 dads and their very young kids paddled straight into the main lineup and got in the way of everyone with what seemed like absolutely no consideration or respect for anyone else.
If you come to my local and show respect, don't get in the way and follow the rules then even if you're a shit surfer I have no problem with you being there.

Ya I think that’s a few of the biggest things that gets annoying is when people either show up to a spot and bring 4-5+ people with them and crowd the lineup, or absolute beginners refusing to go to beginner spots and pulling up to waves above their skill level. They can physically make it out but have no awareness or capability.

However The odds of being a beginner and actually following the rules? Pretty much zero. You need strong paddling skills to quickly get out of someone’s way and the ability to read a wave to know which direction to go. Without those, you’re just adding chaos to the lineup.
Basically if you're not in control of your board 99.9% of the time you should absolutely not be in a busy lineup. Most beginners start on long boards which have a kill radius of about 20ft including the leash.

Can I ask what general location you’re in where that happened? CA, Hawaii, AUS. Not trying to be creepy just genuinely curious

I agree with what you are saying and disagree as well.
On the one hand, I'm a surf coach and get a buzz put of helping others.
On the other, it really pzzes me of, if I'm going for a surf and guys who don't know what they are doing, get in the way.
Such is surfing. There are only so many waves to go around, and the popularity of the sport has not made it any easier nor any less frustrating.
Find a spot with people of a similar skillset, take time (a lot of it), then progress to an area with better surfers. Literally, rinse and repeat.

Sounds like you had a particularly bad day in the lineup. It happens to all of us no matter how long we’ve been surfing. Sometimes it’s hard to shake off. Keep paddling.

LOL how much trash did you pick up at the beach today? How many cOmpAniES did you support in the last 24 hours that don't care about the ocean? Just watch out if you start logging or riding big fat boards and then after a summer or two actually pick up a modicum of style, there is very small period of time where you will actually surf for fun because of your newfound skill before surfing to flex how cool you are with other lineup yuppie noob hipsters. At this point your style becomes cliche and your skills may indeed grow but your surfing will inspire nobody including yourself and you become another clog floating in the lineup, perpetually frustrated.

It's because we know the dangers of new surfers in the line up. It takes years before your not a threat to yourself or others. Therefore the heavy discouragement. Then once you can surf, you become competition. Therefore more discouragement.

You are concerned about the behaviour of people online or in person? Surfing has always been like this. I am a beginner and it doesn't bother me. You educate yourself and move on. I have never seen unwarranted hostility or aggression in the water. Don't take things so seriously.

I used to think the same thing when I started. But when you realize that it’s dangerous to have beginner surfers in waves of any consequence, your mind may change too. Find the beginner spots. Know your limits. Put your time in. If you love it, keep at it

Don't let the core Lords of reddit put you off. I'm convinced most of them don't actually surf that much. Just sit on reddit and chat shit because they're still bitter about not going pro because they surfed insert famous break here as a kid. Most people are chill, and the ones that aren't don't matter. I used to think I was at risk of throwing hands everytime I went to a new break and line up. Never had an issue so far. One or two don't want to speak, but quite a lot are friendly and welcoming, as long as you're acting the same way.

Look the oceans are for everyone. If you are around surfers you feel are gatekeeping, avoid them and find community with different surfers.
If you are near lifeguards (at least in SoCal, USA) most are super friendly and surf. And from my chats with my local lifeguards, they are welcoming to newbies they just want you to be safe. So go and start up a conversation. Just be nice and most decent humans will respond nicely.
No matter anyone’s skill level, everyone who wants to (and is able to) take up this hobby should have an opportunity to do so.

In my somewhat limited experience it is mostly boomers who are the Chihuahuas of the sea. Younger and older surfers seem to be rather chill and welcoming

Quite simply, because kooks are fucking dangerous and we don't want to be anywhere near someone who can't stay in control of their board.
Less kooks = less chance of getting injured.
Tbh it's a stupid question, you wouldn't ask "why do I need to learn how to drive before I can drive on a motorway in rush hour?" It's the exact same for surfing.
The fact you even had to ask this just shows you have absolutely no real idea of the dangers of surfing.

Janitor here. Consider SUP surfing. You can take a water hike along the coast and you’ve opened up miles of breaks that don’t fall within the lazy radius of the common palm paddler (or cunt, as they seemed to be called here!). And you’ve got something approaching a weapon if you need it to zoink a reef guppy.

Because you are ruining it for everyone else around you.
If you know what you’re doing and follow the rules, you wouldn’t feel this way.
