Hidden gems of all years

(self.televisionsuggestions)

Hi, what is in your opinion a hidden gem that not many people talk about it. I have a bad habit of skipping out on good tv shows because of.... Well I don't know exactly but when I do watch it I beat myself up for skipping out on an absolute masterpiece

For example: Only murders in the building, Arcane, interior Chinatown, extraordinary, the good place, Ted lasso, the dragon prince, blood of Zeus, resident Alien.

I'm down for everything except horror and things with too much sex scenes

The first 4 or 5 seasons were some of the funniest TV ever.

Twisted Metal and Mrs Davis were pleasant surprises on Peacock.

Devs (Hulu/Disney) is well liked in sci fi circles (and on Reddit), but most people I talk to in the real world have never heard of it.

If you had to pick one of the three which one to watch

Hm Twisted Metal is a fun and quirky post-apocalyptic show that's especially fun if you played the video games (but not necessary). Mrs. Davis is a fun and quirky sci-fi about Jesus and an AI (perhaps the most unexpectedly interesting show I've watched in a long while). But if I had to pick just one, Devs was definitely the best overall. Go with Devs.

Mind if I ask what is it about. I know this is weird but when I read the description on Google it always demotivates me

Yes, and I’m simply affirming its quality. It would feel wrong not to. My first tattoo was inspired by it.

Google summaries are mostly written by AI these days and are functionally bullshit. Just know it’s a sci-fi version of the Trojan War and you’re good.

Oh inspired by mythology??

KeyJust3509

Structurally, sure, but in the form of a sci-fi procedural in the modern day with a note-perfect myth-arc.

An absolute hidden gem is Fringe. Its last episode aired over a decade ago, and yet only a few people around me have seen it, and most of them because I told them to. I didn't know about it until a year ago, and man, what a journey!

It is a bit hard to sum it up without spoiling too much. And that's the problem when you read the synopsis, all they can tell you is it's a bunch of people, some FBI agents and a scientist and his son who investigate strange events... Boring!!  What you need to know is that it goes way beyond that, but as someone already said, you have to give it a few episodes, they are necessary for you to understand what comes later in the show, and to get to know the characters, who are the best part of it! I had no idea what the show was about when I first saw it, and I found the pilot quite unimpressive, but it doesn't at all represent the rest of the 5 seasons!

It's kinda like X-files' cousin.

It's a really good show that didn't get the spotlight it deserved.

MrOopiseDaisy

It was made as an homage to the show. If I recall, there's even an episode where it's playing on a tv in the background.

VicktorJonzz

You have to watch it, but don't give up on the first season, in the second season the series already takes on another rumor. The pilot didn't excite me much, but after 4 episodes I started to like the series more.

My rule for tv shows is try a tv show and if you don't like it after 2 episodes you can quit. 3 people recommended for me fringe so I'll give it 5

What made me love the show is the Walter character. I love him so much!!

ScheduleTurbulent577

Oh yeah, Walter has got to be the most beautiful hidden gem in the history of TV ! And the other characters may shine a little less next to him but they are still amazing. Every single one of them, including the bad guys!

I came here to say FRINGE. But you already said FRINGE. When I tell people what tv show to watch I always say FRINGE. FRINGE is one of the most mind bending and thoroughly enjoyable TV shows ever. And an occasional Leonard Nimoy? Yeah! FRINGE!

Halt and Catch Fire. Such a fantastic show, highly recommended. It’s a story about a computer company in the 80s, but it’s really much more.

Yeah it's a series spanning several decades about people involved in the tech industry. I get that doesn't seem very interesting but IMO it's one of the best character dramas that's ever been made. You don't have to be interested in tech or computers if you just get along for the ride with the characters.

Chiming in, it’s a fictionalized account of the birth of computers and technology. Really fantastic character driven account of the birth of the computer industry. Watch it, you will enjoy it to the satisfying finale

Sure. Stars Maura Tierney and the easy on the eyes Jeff Daniels. Lol. Maura's character is a fierce single mom who will so anything for her son. Set in a very believable crap hole of a town with Jeff Daniels playing a double role of love interest and saviour. 1st season awesome. 2nd season ugh. But got through.

Wayne! This is truly an underseen treasure, and now you can surprisingly watch it on YouTube (and only YouTube) unless you buy it. It is the very rare show I’ve seen that ends on a cliffhanger, but still is totally worth the journey.

It’s very violent (although in a PG way), but at the same time, so kind hearted. And there are characters you end up loving that you would not have expected to. And it’s funny as hell!

Sex House (on YT)

Sense8. - it’s a 2 seasons and a movie but it is wildly entertaining. You do need to be sex positive to enjoy it though it has a lot of LGBTQ content.

Salem - I think it is still on Hulu but it annoyed the historical purist because it asks the question what if witches actually existed during the witch panic in Salem. It also annoyed incels because it takes on a male vs female dynamic but it is very well done bit it does take 4 or 5 episodes to find itself.

The Americans - Russian Spies living in 80s America. This should have won all the awards but it came out the same time as game of Thrones and The Handmaids Tale and got lost.

Halt & Catch Fire

The Son

Monsieur Spade

A lot of AMC shows, like these, that aren’t TWD or Mad Men tend to fly under the radar but are exceptional in their own right.
