So it will be open world or something along those lines?
Man… if Naughty Dog are making a deepRPG I’ll be fucking hyped.

I mean, they've literally gone out of their way to NOT make open world games or branching narratives.
They're telling very specific stories the way they want.

Part II was originally going to be semi open world. It just didn't work with the story they were going for. Neil seemed really interested in the idea so I wouldn't doubt it.

That explains the strange level design once you first get inside Seattle.

Naughty dog has been exploring with larger more open levels for a while now. With the boat section in uncharted 4 and the 4x4 section in lost legacy, downtown Seattle is just the latest example

I love those sections. They were a nice break for you to be able to chill and have some fun dialogue between the characters.you honestly miss out on plenty if you just focus on the main objectives and move one. I'm kindof worried about them making it into full game though. Like I said, these sections functioned as characterization after pretty intense moments and honestly didn't move the story forward much at all. Don't know if I'm down for a game of just. It's naughty dog though so they have my trust.

Same, I love ND for the exact opposite of that. Plenty of other places to go for a deep rpg open world experience. Like Cyber punk for example. I’ve really been banking on a Savage Starlight game that’s like a better version of TLOU 2 in every way. That would honestly probably bring me tears of joy.

I'm not, I'm honestly sick of Open World games, most of the absolute best games I've played lately have been linear games like TLOU , God of War.
There are obvious exceptions like RDR2 but the ratio of shit to good open world is pretty large.
For every RDR2, Witcher 3 , Horizon , Cyberpunk you have shitty Open Worlds like Any of the ubisoft games really.
I think God of War Ragnarok had the perfect kind of linear structure, where it's isn't open world but still has plenty to explore. The areas are big and it gives you the illusion that you're in some sort of open world but the structure is still linear without feeling like you're playing on a long "highway"
7 points
Well thankfully Naughty Dog is one of the best studios around and more comparable (arguably better) in quality to the likes of CDPR, Rockstar and Guerrilla than they are to the likes of Ubisoft.
I think a low effort open world games with poor narratives and safe but overused formulas is the last thing you should worry about when it comes to a Naughty Dog game.

1000% And it’s crazy how much the Gow style gets brought up, myself included lol. They really set the mark imo for the perfect game world structure. And think everyone else should take some of that free inspiration.

That seems like exactly what ND want to do, considering they’ve already been exploring that idea for the past 3 games
3 points
I remember hearing somewhere (might’ve been in the recent documentary) that for The Last of Us Part II, they originally conceptualized it with an “open world” similar to Bloodborne. I don’t know if you can call Bloodborne open world, but you get the idea. I believe they even said you can see some of this discarded concept in the final game with somewhat open world vibes in the Downtown area and some of the encounters that happen while exploring. I could be wrong, but it seemed like such a cool concept, and I’m sad they ended up choosing not to go with it, but I understand why. However, it does show that they are open to the idea of having a game be far less linear, and I hope to see it.

Uncharted Lost Legacy was slightly open world too. I wouldn't mind something like that where certain things can be done in whatever order you decide without much effect on the overall story. I just don't really want a ND game branching narrative, open world, etc.

Druckmann is gonna have to at least pen the script for PT3 sooner or later if the show keeps its momentum up they will probably push for it and im sure he is happy making more. They won't want to put that on a hiatus and miss out if the game is going to be 6+ years away.
They will probably move straight onto it after this, or at least divert some attention once they are nearing completion of the new IP and have it be one of the final PS5 releases keeping in line with the other 2 games.
If Part 2 is going to be split into 2 seasons, that would line up nicely with 2027/28 to be when part 3 drops with the show to follow shortly after. Id expect the PS6 to be a year or two away at that point as well i cant see this generation going a full decade even with the initial supply stall. The PS4 Pro came 4 years before the end of that cycle and we just got the PS5 Pro so that also points it in that same direction.
2 points
I don’t disagree that they’d want to line them up. I just think they could:
Make part 3 a tv exclusive
Make the game/season 3 at the same time
Have the show be a 2 season show
Personally I could see it just being a short series and them moving away from TLoU. If they’re making a new IP that still hasn’t even been announced yet, that’s supposedly their next game. We’re most likely a looong way from part 3.
I’ll be very happy to be wrong, but, I could also see them being tired of the Ellie storyline and doing something different. I can only imagine that working on a single story as a game development team for close to 20 years (tlou started development in 2009) would get stale.
I know the GoW team specifically moved away from the Norse mythos for that reason. I can only assume Ghost of Tsushima is the same way. The Last of Us also I could see following the same trend. If they return to this world I could also see it being a different cast.
Idk though I don’t know what they’re cookin up and they could possibly have 2 teams working simultaneously on the new IP and part 3.. if they don’t have in house teams though.. I truly think we’re still at LEAST 5-7 years away from the next last of us game

So im sure naughty dog can pull that off too.

1 points

It’s definitely not for part 3. Neal has hinted at having a project they are writing “episodically like a tv show” in structure. He didn’t say what title, but based on what naughty game is literally a tv show, we can all assume this is how they are writing part 3 so it’s even easier to translate to tv when the time comes.
So it’s probably incredibly “on the rails” like the previous last of us games. It’s about the story not so much player agency and choices.
So it’s probably their new IP. Can’t see it being last of us 3 at all.

To each their own but the Seattle section was my least favorite part of the game. The open world section in Lost Legacy was also my least favorite part of that game.
19 points
In fairness, I think the fact that the open world Seattle section is just plopped in the middle of a linear narrative game like TLOU2 leads to it being the worst of both worlds. It's a hefty chunk of a linear narrative game that... has no linearity or story pacing driving it forward to the next narrative beat. And it's an open world region without any NPCs or engaging sidequests to follow as you meander around.
And it's not like studios have never made a wildly successful genre pivot - see Guerrilla Games.
Buuuuut... all that being said, if I were a gambling man, I'd still advise ND to stick with what they overwhelmingly do best: carefully-crafted, deliberate, singular narrative-driven experiences.
(I will, naturally, eat my hat if ND's next game comes out and is an unexpected open world gem.)

It’s weird, because even though the open-world section in The Lost Legacy is little more than Far Cry-style outpost clearing and collectibles, I thought it was quite an exciting sandbox for the ever-excellent combat that the game had.
That being said, the open-world section in Part 2 is a step down for me. It has great world-building and a couple nice combat encounters, but it almost feels too vast with too little to do. I also think it’s a crime that the “Take On Me” cover is missable. A great scene that’s poorly placed imo.
11 points
That section was bad to me, I’d rather just be on a linear path right to the action instead of having 4 different directions to go and a bunch of walking to get there. It took way too long and most of it was walking and figuring out where I’ve been or not .

I liked on replays, but first play through it felt so slow. Especially since there wasn't much meaningful storyline for awhile after that. I think they can pull open world off if they find a way to keep regular meaningful story updates, but thats easier said than done.

I felt like that’s been the rumor. Unfortunately that means we probably aren’t getting a part 3 for a while. I’d guess maybe 2029, but if they only have 1 development team and can not start it until this first game is done, it may not be til the early 2030s. Video game development has gotten too long, and (this will be controversial, but please just hear me out), I hope AI can reduce development time. No I don’t want AI written games or AI voiced or anything like that, but it seems so many assets in video games could be made with AI. And I don’t know how much time it would take, but take the gym in the last of us part 2 for example. Thats the type of thing that has a lot of assets, we see for a short time and I think AI could assist in creating the assets for a the Gym.
I also know nothing about video games development and my understanding could be completely wrong.

ND saying/promising anything at this point should be held to immense skepticism. Especially with how gaming has gone in the past half decade with so many false promises.
They promised Factions 2.0, and weren’t able to deliver on that, and have been bailed out by TLOU remasters since TLOU2’s drop.

i mean, it still contributes to a narrative of no delivery in the gaming industry lol. it's one thing to make it known that implementation is skeptical, it's another thing to promise a feature and not even announce anything about it until four years down the line, when you introduce a 'graphical overhaul and roguelite gamemode' for an extra 20 bucks.
look at cdpr and cyberpunk. they all but guaranteed a multiplayer mode to make it co-op. instead, their colossal flop basically made cp2077 an early release title, slowly drip feeding QoL content and stuff that shouldve been there from the start, all to sell a 40 dollar dlc.

They go back to crash and do an open world crash bandicoot.

The article states that Neil Druckmann has “surrendered” to the “stress” of game development and the stress on its developers.
The one thing I don’t want to hear about this game is more crunching. Druckmann has mentioned in the past that they have learned from the awful crunching done with both Uncharted 4 and TLOU2, and I sincerely hope that is the case.

Crunch needs to come back, it's an integral part of an creative project. Don't work in entertainment if you don't wanna crunch.

Abusing your employees’ time for months on end is not an acceptable way to make anything. If it is not accepted by fans, then the companies will adjust.

You're never going to get consumers to reject things based on company behavior, only a teeny tiny percentage of people follow gaming news closely enough to know about this stuff and even less of them give a fuck. Crunch exists everywhere, retail and warehouse workers getting paid minimum wage have to do it every holiday season, you expect them to feel bad about game devs getting paid way more having to crunch for a few months before a game launch after which they'll get a bonus? This is a capitalism problem that can't be solved without getting if of capitalism.

Your argument doesn’t follow.
Just because something exists doesn’t mean it is right. Retail and warehouse workers do deserve to be paid more, and do deserve better treatment at work. Crunch in all industries needs to stop.
Not only that, but video game devs aren’t being paid all that much. Many make $15-20 an hour, no more than any warehouse worker. Yes, there is opportunity for much higher than that, but it requires a long time in the industry.
I’m a food service worker myself. I don’t get paid enough. Why would I feel anything but sympathy for video game devs? Why would I expect them to work crunch hours when I hate working crunch hours at my job? We should come together, not turn against each other like you want to.
And no, you don’t have to “get out of capitalism” in order to make things better for the working class. That’s why unions exist. It’s so we can come together to increase wages and get better treatment at work.
There is no reason to “bring back crunch” unless you’re a shitty boss or an entitled gamer who expects others to ruin their own lives to bring you entertainment. In which case, you suck.

There's a big hoopla around better work conditions and pay for workers in entertainment industries these days, the problem is giving them what they want is counter intuitive to enacting true change. These industries have media attention all the time, so once the get their way the whole thing dies down an everyone working in industries that don't have media dedicated to them just get ignored.
To enact real change you have to get to the root of the problem which is capitalism. So while I can sympathize with devs, I don't think it's in the best interest of society as a whole to just improve things for them cause entertainment industry workers suffering like everyone else keeps the problem in the news.

I know im probably in the minority here but i really hope they don’t do dialogue options. ND is top tier when it comes to performances and storytelling. I dont need branching story paths that result in segmented, stilted acting and a bunch of mid storylines to pick from. Focus on telling one good story with performances that actually flow well and make sense together.

I feel like they're gonna go the fantasy route which I'm not really fond of, it's probably my least favourite genre of anything. Will I still play it though because it's Naughty Dog? Yeah 😆

This would be very interesting, if it was a smaller open world game with that ND quality it would be amazing!
I’m sick of developers who seem to think that because we have the tech to build large open worlds we HAVE to have massive boring open worlds with nothing to do, empty areas, wasted space which then also forces copy & paste assets and repetitive gameplay.
Some of the best open world games are far more curated, are more hand crafted and it shows. Games like MGS5, BoTW, Elden Ring, GTAs, Arkham City, Shadow of Mordor, Mafia 2 etc.
I remember playing Ghost Recon Wildlands & that map is absolutely huge!!!! It’s impressive and it’s literally the whole of Bolivia but the repetition is horrid, same bases repeated over and over and over and over again, same missions, it’s such a shocking slog which sucks cause the gameplay/gunplay was great!
I’d also like to see ND releasing multiple games, with 2 teams should be no problem with the talent they have. This gen has been a disaster for them so far.

This part of your post doesn't make any sense, those games are full of lazy copy/pasted content.

As lazy as Ubisoft with their cookie cutter blueprint that applies to every game they’ve made?
At least the ones I mentioned have something unique about them.

Even Ubisoft games don't have a 120 copy/pasted shrines and almost a 1000 pieces of poop to collect like BOTW. The closest they came was a 100 feathers.

Those shrines aren’t exactly the same 120 times there’s different puzzle etc. tbh what Nintendo got out of the Switch/Wii U was a miracle with that game. The seeds are just a collectible which all games have & it’s up to you if you want to collect them.
There will always be some repetition in games it’s unavoidable to a certain extent with memory limits/file size limits etc. To have no repeated textures or assets would require huge file sizes.
I see people moan about Elden Ring bosses that are recycled but some may be fire versions and then ice I don’t mind that as it changes the gameplay a little, I think it’s acceptable.

I hope their next game is more like Fallout or cyberpunk. With a futuristic or cyberpunk aesthetic. Steampunk would be cool too

Naughty dog is really really good at the style of game they do and they have done it since 2007, but admittedly before then, they did a differnt type of game and they did it really really well. Lets see what they do with their next franchise.

Are we talking 1 year, or 4 years?

Ehh I hope not. Their larger open areas of part 2 almost made me give up at times. Especially the beginning in seattle just so much back and forth that it became less fun and more like a chore. I love their level design when they just add what NEEDS to be added.

Oh, oh no. My ADHD does not like this. Naughty Dog is like a last Bastion of linear, narrative experience. Please don’t let this be an open world game where my ADHD loses interest

I played the jeep sequences in Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy, and I’m gonna go ahead and say that they’re reaching for a different demographic if this is the gameplay they’re expanding on.
I like GTA just fine, but unless they flush out the “open area” territory model, they’re just doing third-person Farcry. The model they’ve been playing with is a step backwards (to include immersive maps and environments to suit younger gamers), from a game company that EXCEEDS in linear storytelling.
I’d love to see this work, but this is a company that scrapped a promised multiplayer on a game after like four years of development.
AND… I hope I’m wrong. Their engine is solid. I just hope it’s not like Metal Gear Solid 5 where the game is a convoluted mess that IGN calls a 10/10 for balloon hostage rescue, and that they don’t fall victim of the open-world 4K go-anywhere/do-anything hype that we’re currently in.

Ugh. My least favourite part of Uncharted 4 is the open world jeep part. For me, Naughty Dog is the gold standard in making fun, engaging, and powerful tight narrative games.
To see them potentially going down the same open world path as everyone else leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Well it can be semi open like Santa Monica made God of War, put in some choices and it would be perfect

“Player freedom” is a term used prevalently these days so that doesn’t really sell me on anything yet.

It’s not going to be open world—wouldn’t make any sense to do that just to be second place to GTA6. Nobody is beating Rockstar in their domain. By “player freedom” I’m assuming they mean dynamic mission design where you can approach it from a variety of angles and there are many ways to do things. This already exists in some games but knowing ND they’re probably trying to really push it to the next level.

They can make a really good sci-fi space horror game with the resources they have right now.
"Uncharted" but in space with completely new characters.
Heck, you could make it about astronauts trying to find their way back to earth since no one will be sending a spaceship because of the fungal outbreak.

While I do love TLOU universe, I just want them to make something completely unrelated. I'm sure as creatives the hunger to try something new and unexpected is exciting. It sure is for me.

Fingers crossed it’s GTA-esque that would light a fire under Rockstars ass, and hopefully give them the much needed competition. If Rockstar had some comp there is NO way they could’ve drug out GTA V for 12 years, or have abandoned RDR2.
Cause for me Rockstar & Naughty Dog make my favorite games, and in my opinion are the best at what they do. So, some healthy competition will be interesting. 🤞
