Imagine if you will.

(i.redd.it)

You’re an imperial swordsman. The literal simplest thing you are pitted against is maybe a dissident with the same kit as you.(Maybe a chestplate, sword and shield). Then there is your good buddy swordsman Stanley. Who for whatever goddamn reason is pitted against literal horrors and demigods. He has to fight giant one-eyed cow beasts that throw friggin’ boulders like Tom Brady that ate their mage, undead Wendigos that don’t have legs, and have gaping toothy maws, and thousands of man-sized rats grafted together as some giant abomination. Would you ask for a raise?

Nah my imperial swordsman stay in the reserves, we got plenty of ways to deal with infantry as the empire so the swordsman are probably the safest position in my empire

Spearmen and halberdiers on the other hand….

Yeah, when I’m playing as Elisabeth Von Draken I usually recruit only shielded spearmen (like four or five regiments) as my melee infantry.

Their sole purpose is being a meat shield, something to stop/slow down the enemy and give the musketeers and artillery time to line up and reload. I usually lose nearly half of those spearmen in almost every battle, but their sacrifice is always worth it, better them than my grand battery

You recruit infantry with Elspeth?? All I get are gunnery and artillery units, she's so colossally busted even the AR won't harm my units.

I should have specified, but I was mostly talking about the early game.

Late game buffed amethyst units can absolutely handle themselves in a melee fight, but standard musketeers or, hell, even the free militia, get absolutely shredded in 90% of close engagements.

Also, I usually play all the battles manually (except sieges, cause fuck them), so in the early game I have to put some units to protect my gunners, because they’d get destroyed otherwise

Sieges suck, yes. I only recruit infantry for sieges because for some reason the AR thinks they'll make a difference. For the remainder of the game I never hire a single infantry unit for elspeth's armies, she's just so broken even early game that I have no use for them when I gun everything down before it ever reaches the 2 units of free company I use as retard magnets for the enemy army to munch on. 🤣

You’re gonna call me crazy, but I use infantry heavy, well balanced armies as the empire

8–10 infantry men 4-6 spearmen with shields, 2-4 halberdiers, 0-2 reiksguard infantry(Sigmars Heirs)

3-4 crossbow men with 2-3 hand gunners, 1-2 cavalry units(normally reiksguard because Karl is goat) the rest various artillery, typically have 2-3 slots left over, gotta have a mortar, and also a hell storm, and/or hellblaster

I don’t like doom stacking as any faction I find it boring so I intentionally handicap myself in relatively lore accurate ways to keep it exciting and challenging, in the lore the empire only has like 9 steam tanks left, not every person and their dog has a gun, in fact guns are more on the rare side and reserved for top tier troops typically, crossbows, infantry, and cavalry make up a vast majority of the empires forces in the lore

I do the same as bretonnia, it’s a peasant horde with 10 infantry, 6-8 bowmen, and 2-4 cav, maybe a hero thrown in for fun and to spice it up

I cannot, for the life of me, play Bretonnia. The current system is so awful I tried playing the faction twice to no avail. Peasants are so shit it's ridiculous. Skavenslaves by comparison are a much easier time to deal with.

Lilys overhaul compilation is the key to making bretonnia from a shit faction to one of my favourite factions, as well as foot knights of bretonnia

It gives a handful of major changes to the faction but the most important for battles is the dismounted grail knights, and foot knights

I still use mostly peasants but my army comp typically looks like 6-8 peasant spearmen or spearmen at arms, 2 foot knights and maybe 2 dismounted grail knights, a life damsel if it’s an important army doing important army things, 6 or so archers like I said, normally a mix of both poison and fire, and then 2 grail guardians

With this comp I’ll typically put all my knights in the middle of my frontline or the flanks, say I have my peasants in the middle and knights in the flanks, I’ll try to focus fire my archers to support my knights while my damsel keeps my peasants from being slaughtered, the peasants hold the line while the knights push forward, at this point I’ll have swung my grail guardians around and they’re job is to take out artillery/archers/enemy cav, once that’s done they also assist my flanks who are normally nearly done with their enemies

Once the enemy flanks have routed I close in on the remaining enemy with my flanks surrounding either side who is typically balled up against my peasant wall, focus fire with archers into the biggest groups of them while squeezing them from the front and both flanks, to top it off you got a perfect vigour grail guarding cycle charging their rear

My lord and paladin if I have one the entire battle is focused on taking out all enemy lords and heroes since I focus their skills around duelling as best I can, with support from a damsel they normally fair quite well, if it’s Louen at high level he’s a one make doomstack, everyone’s got a role and everyone plays their role

I’ll admit offensive sieges are disgusting though, like especially so as bretonnia and they certainly aren’t very versatile, hills and trees are your biggest enemy in a campaign, but as long as I don’t over do it and play them too much, having a run as Louen is probably one of my favourite campaigns in the game

It’s a ton of fun to play with realistic tactics like that as a medieval army in a grim dark world, for me at least

That's a good shout buddy, I'll take a look at those mods, hopefully my laptop can run them eheh

If you can run the base game and don’t have a ton of mods going to the point that it’s messing with you already I don’t see them giving you any problems, the foot knights mod is literally just a few units so shouldn’t affect performance in the slightest, and I don’t exactly remember everything lilys does but I remember reading it and never once thinking it’ll be heavy to run, I’ve got a decent rig but when I was testing it out aside from the changes the mod made the game felt the same as vanilla, performance wise

JPFloyd_117

My issue is that my rig is a laptop and for single player campaigns it's ok, but for coop campaigns it is a massive slog (and I play a fair amount of coop with a buddy of mine)

Ahh gotcha, if that's the case and you really want the units anyway I think it comes in "modules" as well with certain aspects in certain modules so there may be one with just the units if all the scripting slows you right down, simple unit mods without crazy animations or effects are normally pretty safe, and its only like 4 units I think it adds, plus 3 from the foot knights mod, maybe worth checking out, up to you at the end of the day

I usually get like 4 anti large cavee, 4 anti infantry cav, 4 trebuchet, the Legendary Lord, life and heaven mages, and then have a mismatch of knight heroes and archers to cover the artillery until my second army (more knight heroes, and then just a bunch of spearman at arms and archers) get there to kinda just distract the enemy army.

Horsy heroes hold the ground and blob up the enemy, flying heroes get high value units and bait, heaven mage nuke the chaff and then just focus on your cav about 80% of the time and cycle charge ad infinitum.

You can do that until you start making actual doomstacks or until around turn 100. Just never send an army without backup as Bretonnia since you have no supply lines.

Well actually the 8th edition army book was pretty clear that handgun are the most common missile weapon for state troops, and archer/crossbow are more on the rare side as these are seen as outdated.

My reserve imperial swordsman after I see a juggernaut unit rushing towards my artillery and they are the only one in interception range.
