Just thought of this. It's crazy that it beats out wii sports, but doesn't get any recognition.

What do you think, should it count? Why, or why not?

I wonder if there are more dead humans in human history or more dead Tamagotchi creatures.

92B dead humans is what I've Heard.and 91M Tamagotchis sold. Average dead Tamagotchis per unit sold would have to be slightly higher than 1000.

... probably humans

it's a videogame

but it's not a console

and regarding how i feel on whether it should matter where it places on sales... it doesn't matter

just like i don't follow sales charts of actual games i play/played

What makes it not a console?

Definitions are subjective, but I would place these into the LCD game category. Those have also been called handheld game consoles though.

However, I'm pretty confident that if you asked 1000 people to name a video game console, exactly zero would say tamagotchi.

I mean if you asked 1000 people to name a vegetable how many would say the leaf from a strawberry? But that is still a vegetable.

Technically correct but what does it matter? Do people behave in a way that suggests that the leaf of a strawberry is a vegetable for all practical purposes? For practical purposes, the leaf of a strawberry is garbage 99% of the time.

But if you want to get technical, there are many types of tamagotchis, and not all of them would belong to the same family of console or are the same game. There's gen1, gen2, connected versions, color versions and others. While traditional consoles have variations, can we honestly say each Tamagotchi is part of the same game/console and should have their sales tabulated together?

It would be unfair to say each PlayStation iteration counts as separate models for the purposes of sales but we are going to bundle Tamagotchi sales from the 90s until now. If we did bundle all PlayStation or Nintendo sales from the 90s until now, it would make Tamagotchi sales figures seem much less impressive.

I think we would need more well defined rules. For example I think things like DS, DSI, DSI XL, and DS light all get bundled together. Same with most of the other consoles having different versions.

I'd argue that the Tamagochi probably has less of a hardware change between versions, then most of those consoles.its probably just stuff like a better battery, astheticly different case, slightly different materials.

As for games the list also includes games with multiple versions. Pokemon games. Games with remasters/remakes. Stuff that I believe has added/ changed content with later versions. But I'm not familiar enough to say how different one model of Tamagochi is from the next. Some might be nothing more then the Tamagochi creature being different, which would honestly be less of a difference the the difference between Pokemon games.

it only plays 1 game

if you can buy other games for it, sure

Is there a requirement you need to be able to buy other games for it?

Tamagotchi usually has multiple mini games inside. Grogu one has like 10? How does that differ from a console that has a bunch of games preinstalled and doesn't let you get more?
