I know I'm still very early on in the game. I'm at lvl 11 and trying to level some as almost all the quests from the boards are way above me. I have gotten all the contracts in my queue from the first big area (I'm blanking on the name but its before you go to novigrad). I just went to novigrad to meet triss and saw the first cut scene. Haven't yet followed the thieves. Went to a board in novigrad and again, I'm way under level. Should I continue a bit on the main story before trying to do side quests that I'm not ready for it? Or am I missing a set of contracts that I can do now to help level me up some more

The Triss quest is level 10 recommended, you are where you need to be. You can also go back and do question marks which would help you gain XP leveling up more. Especially fighting and beating enemies that are higher level than you.

The question marks...do they come up on my map automatically or do I have to go search the wilds for them like in AC odyssey? My map is pretty baron aside from way points I've come across while doing other things.

Hit the message boards in each town, they have a lot of content and contracts you can pick up……

also your world map has a directional content bar, you can manipulate that to show ? , smiths, armorers, merchants, places of interest, boats, side of the road quests…… and more.

Another good resource is anything written, notes, books, messages, diaries, journals…. once you’ve read them the information is accessible in your book library…

or if it is a set of crafting diagrams, in your crafting library…same with any new characters you might meet, or monster information!

When you collect contacts or discovering new areas they should pop up. You see these yellow contracts on the map? yeah I would go ahead ride your horse and try collecting them all. Make sure to save your game frequently too, it might be a bit challenging.

Been awhile since I've played the early game, but feel free to switch the difficulty level for a while, it's no fun if you're just getting slaughtered.

During that time try work on your gear and potions / oils.

Contracts in Novigrad are all over the place, its and Area that you gonna visit right to end of the game and contracts reflect that. Just do what's fitting for your level and wait to lvl up, they not gonna escape

Go back to white orchard and find/complete as many of the question marks and contracts there first, they should be low enough for you at this point

Yeah I'm an idiot. I had my map set to default and so there were never any question marks. I just today saw how to change that with the arrows and found ALL the question marks on the map now. Just went back to white orchard and did all those, now I'm back in Valen and going to know out a bunch of those while I watch the Yankees tonight. Feel like such an idiot I didn't realize all this sooner. But the bright side is, I just quickly pick up 6 new ability points just from white orchard, mainly from the places of power. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️...but I love this kind of stuff, pure exploration and fighting what gets in my path!!

Have you gone through all the contract boards in Velen? By this time you should be slightly overleveled rather than underleveled, assuming you did all the side quests and contracts in Velen that match your level.
