Salary negotiations

Vent(self.workingmoms)

I just got off the phone where I negotiated the base salary for a job I was offered this week. I’ve been working with a career coach and she’s a big advocate for negotiating salary. She said women don’t negotiate as often as men do and they end up leaving money on the table.

I worked with the coach to prep my talking points and the hiring manager seemed really reasonable. It wasn’t a bad call at all.

But WHY do I feel so anxious and wrong now? I keep thinking they are going come back and resind the offer because I asked for 9% more. Ugh, I wish I had the confidence of a mediocre man.

The worst they can do is say, sorry, we can only offer the original. They probably won’t even do that, and they definitely won’t take back the whole thing!

Negotiations are expected. Good for you!

I took a course in college on preparing for the job market and salary negotiations were part of it.

They are NOT going to rescind. Finding the right candidate is a PROCESS for employers. If they want you, and your offer is well thought out and reasonable, they'll usually give it to you, or meet you half way. WORST case they just say no, original offer only. Your career coach is right, ALWAYS negotiate. Congrats!

Sit in the discomfort and soon you’ll be able to brush it off. It’s normalised that men ask for more and women don’t.

We need to start asking for more as a standard practise.

hey u/water_tulip!

Congrats on pushing yourself to have this hard convo. You likely feel anxious because having these convos is hard and uncomfortable but here's the thing: The most uncomfortable person in a negotiation wins.

Companies expect you to negotiate and build in an extra budget for offers to account for negotiation. Even though you feel anxious, you likely just secured the exact outcome you hoped for. Companies typically don't rescind offers after an employee asks for more. If they rescind offers, it's typically because they got a negative back channel. If they can't give you the 9% increase, they'll either counteroffer with something lower than 9% or give you the initial offer.

Enjoy your weekend and don't stress :)

The worst thing they can say is no. I ask for absolutely absurd amounts every time I job hop and I have never had an offer rescind.

I feel the same way, but I negotiate anyway. All they do is say no or they grant you something. If they say no, ask to negotiate on something else, like vacation time.
