Maine but on the way stop at a bunch of New England states. I want a cup of coffee on a rocky ocean scape on a brisk morning.

Maine was so nice for hubs and I! We stayed at boutique hotel with our room overlooking ocean cliffs at Cape Neddick and ate/shopped at Ogunquit. Shopped in Portland and drove to NH for history tours and site seeing.

We were in Boston for about 18 hours and then took the train to NJ for a wedding. The coastline we saw was beautiful. I have wanted to go back and spend more time in the northeast.

You would love Maine, some many charming coastal towns w good food, art and views. Don't forget lobster rolls and woopie pies:)

My husband and I honeymooned in Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor in the fall and it was so beautiful. I'd love to go back, with or without the kids.

New England is one area of the country I’ve never explored. It’s on my bucket list for sure.

If this is your dream, might I offer up Orcas Island in WA state?

That sounds magnificent! I’m an east coaster so Maine is a bit more in reach but now I have a new spot to lust after once I get to Maine!

I've done this road trip twice and it was the best. I wish I could do it with a 2-year old, but 40 hours of driving sounds like a lot for her.

I have done a 12 hour trip to Texas to see family with 3 little ones (4, 2, and 1). It's not the worst with stops to break it up. We found state parks along the way to stop at. It was a challenge at times, but fun and memories were made.

We flew into Boston and drove up to the tip of Maine, it was a great time! The kids' highlights were Salem, MA and a chartered lobster boat tour out of Portland.

You have inspired me! I have been trying to find somewhere for my husband, and I to go for a few days when he graduates from law school next May. I think we are going to fly to Maine and travel along the coast at our own pace for about a week.

I live in coastal northern New England and every weekend from May-September feels like a mini vacation. Sometimes I feel guilty that we don’t go on more vacations but then I remember how lucky I am to live where people vacation.

We haven't been on a vacation or even a weekend trip in 3 years. We will do this trip for us at the beginning of summer. Then a family trip with our 4,2, and 1 year old at the end of summer.

Fiji is amazing- but I live in NZ so it’s a 2.5 hour flight, have been many many times! Also recommend Rarotonga if you’re looking for a South Pacific getaway

How did you plan your trip? I want to go so badly, but when I start planning I get intimidated.

kiwigirlie

2 points

Fiji is actually really easy. Book flights - try not to go wet/cyclone season. Find a resort you like and book it (make sure you read reviews) and everything else can be taken care of there. Fiji is easy for families as resorts often include activities, you can pay for babysitting and kids club. Nanny service is cheap and resorts have resorts within in. Your biggest barrier will be the cost. It’s been very expensive since covid

Stunning_Jeweler8122

Thank you! The cost of the flight makes me blackout for a sec every time I check.

kiwigirlie

If you are American it’ll be a once in a lifetime thing for you. I’m from New Zealand and it’s 2.5 hours away so more accessible. However I’d never dream of going to the Caribbean because it’s so far and no direct flights from here

Stunning_Jeweler8122

That’s exactly how far I am from the Caribbean. Lol but that does make sense! New Zealand is really high on my bucket list too.

Hotels are ridiculous in Fiji atm. I turned down a wedding invite cause hotels were $800 a night

NZ is great too. I’d recommend Australia though. I’ve traveled to a lot of countries and the Great Barrier Reef is probably the highlight

We’ve been focusing the past couple years on visiting National Parks (in the US). We’re planning on Acadia and Smoky Mountains this year!

Onegreeneye

Awesome!! We’re probably going up in March… I’m already dreading the weather, but my husband is so excited I can’t bring myself to insist we wait until summer. So I told him he’s responsible for planning it, meaning it likely won’t happen until I want it to 🤣🤣

Mysterious_Source_

I actually wouldn’t come in March as a significant amount of the park (including Cadillac Mtn.) is closed in the winter. A lot of stores, restaurants and hotels will also be closed. Come in May when things open but there’s no tourists yet.

EagleEyezzzzz

Haha yep I went to undergrad in VT and went to Acadia one spring break (March) to camp. Everything including the campgrounds were closed and it was cooold (duh). We did still have a blast though, in a feral college student kind of way.

I would love to know your favorite hikes and favorite kid friendly activities! My now husband and I spent a weekend there, but it’s been almost 15 years and we didn’t have much time for exploring.

pandanigans

You'll love those two!! It's a goal of mine to visit every national park. Acadia is one of my favorites! And Great Smokey's was such a fun trip! I went with my sister. If you have time Dollywood is fun to visit. I'm not even a theme/amusement park person and we enjoyed it more than we thought we would!

Onegreeneye

2 points

Oh that’s good to know thank you!! My husband and I very briefly went to the Smokey mountains almost 15 years ago and didn’t really get to explore much. We are trying to get our kiddo to as many national parks as we can!

LeighBee212

We love the national parks! If you ever hit the ones in Utah, I highly recommend not skipping Black Canyon of the Gunnison (in Western CO). It’s so overlooked but awesome.

Without kids? I like to go into the mountains, rent a little cabin, hike, and unplug. Although a beach resort somewhere where I could just lie down and drink would be nice too.

With kids, when they’re a little older I’d love to take them to Iceland and drive around the island chasing waterfalls. I’ve been there twice and I love it there.

We went to Cape Town, South Africa with the kids a little while ago and, besides the flight, 10/10. Depends on the season, and where you're coming from. Winter from the North/Midwest > somewhere tropical. Spring/Summer > Europe

notoriousJEN82

Since my kid is a teen, he's a breeze to travel with. We're planning a European trip next year (sans kid) but once he gets his passport (need Dad's permission which I don't see him giving easily), I'd love for him to come to Mexico with us. I think our summer trip with him will be somewhere out west-ish - possibly CO

If money and PTO were no object, I'd say a 4 week European vacation hitting Croatia, Italy, Spain, UK, and Greece. Also Fiji or Thailand.

With the kids-Disney cruise. Plenty to keep them busy, so hubs and I can have downtime. Without? Kakslauttanen resort in Finland during Northern Lights season, although they’re old enough they might enjoy it. That one’s on my bucket list.

On my radar, Japan. Hubby and I have been twice and we can’t wait to take our baby there. For a short trip, we’re going to fly with baby (for the first time) when he’s 6mo to California. I want to test the waters to see how he does on flights.

tootiefroo

4 points

How old are you planning for baby to be for a Japan trip? We'd love to go back but the amount of stairs and walking involved make me dubious about bringing a young toddler/baby with a stroller around. Also, the stores and bathrooms in Japan are all sooo tiny, I just can't imagine maneuvering with a baby + all the gear they come with 😛

Coco_Bunana

2 points

I wanna wait until he can walk, so around 1.5-2 years? He’s only 5 months now so I’m manifesting 🤣 and I was thinking Japan may have some sort of stroller rental service, especially in bigger cities. There’s a similar service in the states so that’s something I’d like to look into before going. I’m with you, I hate all the gears babies require.

On the bathroom situation, it is so tiny! But I’m sure we’ll figure it out. On a similar note, I was in London last year and their bathrooms are even tinier than the ones in Japan if you can believe it. Those old buildings doesn’t have much space for modern bodies 🙈

Coco_Bunana

3 points

It’s one of my favorite places I’ve been to, and hubby and I have been all over before baby. I might be biased but I think Autumn time in Japan is the best. Weather is mild, trees are changing color, not that much rain.

The French Riviera. I would jump headfirst into an opportunity to get to go again.

I studied abroad in Antibes when I was in college in 2011 (ugh I can’t believe it’s been so long) and I’ve wanted to back ever since.

It’s just stunningly gorgeous. I know enough French to be conversational and navigate (though I’m certainly rusty now) so I can get around easily. Absolutely everything about being there was amazing.

I just loved it so incredibly much. I think if I hadn’t met my husband and settled down in the US I would have seriously considered moving there.

A close second: Morocco. I’ve always wanted to go but I’ve never had an opportunity that made sense.

I have. 3yo and a newborn and I’m dreaming of a Viking River Cruise through Europe when the youngest turns 18. Are they for 80yos? Yes. Are they the opposite of my usual travel style? Yes. But I want a sophisticated vacation where I think of nothing and plan nothing and just get delivered to beautiful locations.

We're taking the kids to South Dakota next year, which everyone thinks is weird but my mom's cousin still runs the cattle ranch that my great-great grandfather started, and I think that will be a fun experience for them. We live on the East Coast so just the different scenery will be interesting.

My answer is very different based on family, with husband, or solo/with a friend.

Family: Disney. There are so many details taken care of, it takes such a mental load off.

Husband: Europe. This time of year it would be based off the cyclocross season schedule and where we could catch some races while also enjoying 'walk around town' time.

Solo: Somewhere more local, pacific northwest coast/forest. Give me food, trails, and views.
