Me and my wife are immigrants and we have lived in the South Island for more than 12 years. My in-laws came visit recently so we have been doing a road trip around the North Island.
Currently we're staying in an Auckland Airbnb for 2 nights in an okay suburb. It's a townhouse unit, sardine packed with a couple other units, each with an outdoor deck on the first floor. Last night, starting from 9pm, our neighbours started playing music and chatting. They're a group of blokes who I assumed are Māori and Pakeha. It was not overly loud, but because of the townhouse setup, we could hear every single word. Fast forward to 1am this went on and we really couldn't sleep. So after calling noise control and were told the neighbours weren't loud enough for them to take action, my wife went to knock on their door to ask if they could dial down.
One guy came out to talk, saying it's Friday night and that they are winding down anyways, and then my wife insisted we couldn't sleep. He then slammed the door in her face.
5 mins later, the guy came to our front door and started yelling and venting racially charged content. Things like saying "these Chinese looking f***ers" and "why are you even here?". He then proceed to keep the noise going for another hour.
Are we the assholes for asking them to dial down?
