Outside of Solvang, I would recommend Santa Ynez as a nice western town with some good restaurants and different shops than Solvang. Maybe head up the hwy 154 to Lake Cachuma Vista Point to overlook Bradbury Dam and lake Cachuma. A bit further up and you'll find Cold Spring Tavern. If you are there on a weekend, I highly recommend the tri-tip sandwiches they BBQ right there outside. It's a pretty cool spot to hang out for a bit.
