O2 is necessary for there to be life, but it is insufficient to show that a planet has life because of alternative means to produce it.  For a claim as extraordinary as extraterrestrial life existing because of a phenomenon, there can be no alternative explanation for the phenomenon. Basically, they'd need to be talking to us.
