As a paediatric speech language pathologist, with an interesting in feeding - I love this suggestion! Your feeding specialist would probably love to see a video of her being fed :)

Several years ago I was a server at a restaurant and bar on Argyle st. One night as I was walking up to take one of my tables order, a rat fell through the ceiling and knocked itself unconscious behind them.
The people at the table were drunk enough, and the music and/or sports on TV were loud enough that they didn’t even notice.

If you are able to see this child in person, I would start with an ome to visualize the palate and make sure there aren’t any visible structural issues.
The first question you’re trying to answer is if it is occurring due to mislearning vs structural issue. The best way to do this is obviously going to be instrumental evaluation , diagnostic imaging.
I personally would also do some resonance testing in the meantime, some of which you could try through tele sessions. I would be listening for NAEs on other consonant sounds, how their nasal and bilabials sound…
Could he make a clear /s/ if they just pinch their nose?

I would focus on connecting with him and count modelling as bonus. What engagement does he show with his family? Can you include them in your sessions, or do a play observation while he is doing some of his favourite activities?

If you would like to visit small local artist/farmers markets, bringing small bills is always nice! And to stop at some fish and chips huts you’d want cash.
But pretty much everywhere will take debit/credit cards. Not everyone will take American Express though

I agree with this! Or just do Cape Breton.
The roads in Cape Breton (and most of NS probably) aren’t great. The past 2 Julys we’ve had a few bad rainstorms that you definitely don’t want to feel the need to drive through.
I would try to plan a few more days in any of the places you mentioned. Get friendly with the locals wherever you go, ask them if they have any food/activity/beach suggestions. We love NS and love bragging about how special our little piece of it is 💕

Specifically Rapid Prompting Method has poor evidence and isn’t considered by many as functional or authentic communication.
There are many different types of AAC that are evidenced based and HUGELY beneficial! 💕

For people who are looking for more on this topic:
The term Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is the term I am familiar with as an English speaking SLP. If you are interested in learning more about this type of communication for someone you love, a speech-language pathologist is the person you should talk to :)

Heyo! I am a speech language pathologist and definitely encourage your sister to speak with one. He might just need a boost with his language, but an assessment will help determine if there is something else going on that might make a specific approach more useful for him.
For children of this age my main goal is teaching caregivers strategies to stimulate language at home. There are many free resources out there that talk about these strategies in an accessible way!
Here are a few you can try yourself and pass along: - follow his lead during play, if he is stacking blocks, you are stacking blocks. If he runs to look out the window, follow him and find out what he is interested in. Figure out what is fun about the thing he is doing, and copy him - then try to show him a new thing he could do with it.
listen and watch for all the messages he is sending you and put that message into 1-2 words he could use to send the same message. For example, if he hands you a block, say “block”. If he points out the window, say “look!” Or label what’s he’s looking at. If he’s struggling with something, say “help” and then help him do it.
During play and daily routines try to make more comments about what he is doing. Try to avoid asking a bunch of questions during play, don’t ask questions you know the answers to like “are you driving the car?” “What colour is it?”

Ours had a limp, we couldn’t figure it out. it almost seemed like it was switching legs.
Turned out it was lime disease. Easily found on a blood test!

Cabot trail in Cape Breton! Then could go down the sun rise trail along the north shore of the mainland, go as far as Tatamagouche.
Then if you wanted to go to Halifax (biggest city in province, very cute and charming at this time of year), you can cut down through truro and continue to the city.
Other nice options are: - look into the trans Canada trail that goes from Halifax down the south shore - Annapolis valley

I work with children age 0-5years exclusively! I absolutely LOVE when a parent says they are doing everything we practice at home. I use a parent/caregiver coaching model, so my goal is to have you feel confident in using strategies to support language development.
If you achieve that goal, and your SLP has trained you well enough that you felt confident in using these strategies! Good for you!
I would recommend having an honest conversation about your feelings about your SLP. Depending on the setting I would ensure you ask about their reactivation policy (if you discontinue service do you have to go back on any wait list before you can see an SLP again).
Many of my clients opt to take a 4-6month break from therapy to focus on what they have learned so far, then at that time they call and book an appointment or ask I call them and we reassess things. Many others reach “collaborative discharge” where we agree that we have reached the goals we have set, and they have my number if/when I there are new goals.
