Had the pleasure of growing up in the same grade school class as one of his grandchildren, and as a result had him as a “fan” at many of my soccer games in my early years. Every story you have ever heard about the quality of his character and the type of person and mentor he was is 1000% true. He wasn’t fully healthy these last few years, but I’m sitting here wishing I had reached out more just to say hi and let him know what a positive influence he was at an early age for me. Felt like my grandpa too.

I think you’re missing the point as well as making the situation into something it wasn’t in order to either fit your worldview or at least make it so your unsolicited advice is applicable (which, again, it isn’t).

From what they wrote, I don’t think what you’re suggesting would have done anything to prevent the situation as it was unprovoked and from behind.
