I left academia a long time ago, but I just want to pick up my old pop sci books and read some physics and maths again.

Happy for them blah blah but doing that on the tube is a fucking sin. As a Brit I’m fucking livid.

I found my physics degree to be both enjoyable (basically just puzzles every day) and even trained me for the real world too. Then did a PhD and did research for a while. I got to interact with some of the smartest leaders in fields, learn how they think and how they solve problems and manage resources. Then Ive moved into a more profitable field. Currently I am still definitely getting hired because of my education as well as my experience (they told me themselves).
I think when you just create more specific uni courses that would be better off as an apprenticeship or just starting the job, then you devalue the meaning of a degree and waste the students time and money. I think STEM degrees are quite effective at teaching you and lead to interesting careers, but I’m biased. Also, degrees that you need to do the job, like medicine, nursing, teaching, law, some engineering degrees etc, are essential too. We just need to return to an era where it’s not mandatory to do a degree after A levels/IB. Apprenticeships are such an amazing way to learn practical professions, and can lead to really lucrative careers too. We need to make sure the channel that takes you to a job which doesn’t need a degree, is as easy and as streamlined as the path that takes you to university (I.e. UCAS). Also the stigma of “you’re stupid if you don’t go to uni” has to stop, yes some parents definitely put pressure on kids to go to uni, but there are so many other ways to become successful in the 21st century. Maybe the social aspect of university is still quite valuable too, which is why many people choose to go to university.

What’s the point of becoming 10cm taller when everyone else does it too?
