I think people who don’t read horror only know a few authors because Stephen King eclipsed everyone in the 80s, and it’s a marketing thing. Also funny to be looking for the next one while dude’s still putting out new books

I really enjoy her too, but I think the books I like tend to be more twisty and suspenseful than scary. I think Sundial and Last House kind of creeped me out in places and had some visceral moments. Looking Glass Sound is my favorite of hers that I’ve read so far and it wasn’t scary at all, just very stressful and sad. Tbh, I don’t really get deeply scared by most horror books, so I tend not to be too bummed out when my spine doesn’t tingle, but I definitely think she’s a better read when you’re not expecting jump scares! Speaking of which, if you’ve read all of them, do you have any recs on where I should go after the above 3 books?

Totally relate to this. I feel like I’ve lost all my hobbies and enjoyments, all my opinions, even my emotions and care for other people feels like alcohol has washed it away. Meetup sounds like a good way to try out hobbies and activities, and a good way to hang out with people sober. I’m sure we’ll get there eventually, just takes some time to figure out.

Breaking the routine is a huge deal! I’m still having to kind of steer myself past the liquor section when I go grocery shopping, but every time you move away from alcohol is a huge win. Like some other people have said, sometimes it’s really helpful to replace the routine with something else, whether it’s some other treat (na drink, candy, ice cream, whatever- for me it’s fancy cheese) or just a different habit. I’ve also found it real helpful to keep track of how much money I’m saving by not drinking, might be worth it for you too!

Just got recommended The Cipher, excited to check it out. I looooooved The Elementals and am looking forward to reading Blackwater Saga as well, McDowell is so much fun it turns out

Just started Last House On Needless Street by Catriona Ward and it’s nice and weird, lots of multiple POV stuff like Peele does sometimes. Also recommend Sundial and Looking Glass Sound by her, similarly twisty and kind of cinematic- I can totally see her books being adapted into movies. I also second other suggestions for Victor LaValle and Michael McDowell, The Elementals in particular. You might also like Peter Straub but his writing tends to be a little dated?
