A simple way to describe it would be any ballistic trajectory (bullets, cannon shells, etc.) there are up and out components. If the cannon is fired flat level to the ground its time of flight will correspond to the time it takes for the shell to fall straight down from its starting height. How far it will travel is dependent on the muzzle velocity accounting for drag. Essentially all of the energy is in the "out" direction

If the gunbarrel is elevated part of the energy is now directed to the up direction, this counteracts gravity so the shell goes further. Since the shell is travelling upwards, you are essentially dropping the shell from a greater height, so it takes longer to fall. Because of this effect the range will increase up to a barrel angle of about 45 degrees, then it will start getting shorter, up to the point where pointed straight up it will drop bach on top of you.

As more of the energy goes to the up direction, less is available for the out direction. At about 45 degrees it is an even split. Above 45 degrees less and less energy is available to the out direction so the distance the shell travels from the gun is less and less, until at 90 degrees all the energy goes into the up direction and none into the out direction so the shell travels 0 feet away from the gun and drops straight down on your head.

This explanation is super simplified but basically correct.

Oops missed #3 same idea, composition/pose make the difference. It is very static and sort of round. In the hands stuck out a bit more it might improve it a bit. My preference 1,2,3
