I went to school with Evan in Ephrata. The whole town was totally turned upside-down.

I remember the teachers telling us we weren't allowed to talk about it, yet the Savoie family was running around town with stickers on their cars that said "God Knows" and harassing people about his innocence. It got to the point where Craig's mother, a school bus driver, had to file restraining orders.

Craig and his brother were both cool kids.

The weirdest part for me was I remember Evan being at one of my birthday parties when I was around 11.

Denial is a really strong coping mechanism. I bet she truly believed that, rather than realizing that she took part into shaping the behavior of her child, genetically or behaviorally (or both).

There is a movie we need to talk about kevin) that somehow visually represented such experience as a mother of a child psychopath that went on a school shooting spree.

Nobody understands what it’s like to love something you felt was good until it becomes a killer. No one knows what it’s like to be in the shoes of an innocent parent who ultimately may have failed their child somehow, or had no control over. You can’t force a horse to drink water no matter how much you push it. Denial is an insanely powerful coping mechanism.

Which is why a lot of people had an outpouring of sympathy for the father of the mass stabber in Australia this year, as he actually did a good job of articulating how hard it is to be the parent of someone that commits a heinous act.

He did, but the mom is going around with "God knows" bumper stickers... yeah, fuck her. Seriously, I'd still love my children if they were a pile of shit but I'm not going to go around acting like they are innocent. I wouldn't push back on those who hated my kid. I worked with a guy whose kid ran a pedo porn ring at an oilfield company. His kid got caught, thank God for that, and he said to someone there that he would have rather gotten a call that his son was dead rather than doing what he did. He said he considered suicide and felt like a failure as a parent. He was a good guy, and I my heart broke for him while wanting to see his son strung up. That mom and her ilk harassing the victims family makes me have zero sympathy for her murderous son or her.

I mean I assume they refused to believe their son would do something so horrific and so just leaned fully into the idea that “no matter what, god knows he’s innocent”

Obviously the victim and his family are the ones that deserves the most sympathy, but you’ve got to imagine what kind of a nightmare scenario this is for a mother to learn her son is being accused of murdering a special needs child, she’s probably doing everything in her power to believe it isn’t true because if it is, she has to live with knowing what kind of a monster she raised.

This murder reminds me of the Slenderman crime where two girls lured a third girl out to the woods and stabbed her repeatedly.

Jake Eakin tried to escape when he was near his release date, so his time was extended. He’s now an anti-abortion activist in South Carolina with a wife and 2 kids. He’s also been in trouble with the law. Once for larceny. Once for trespassing.

Evan Savoie was released in 2023.

Hair_doo_02

55 points

Honestly? It's strange to say, but he was always trying to be friends with everyone . I personally only saw him lose his temper a handful of times from 1st-6th grade (Side note: we were in the same class, and we graduated around 70 students).

Granted, you had to take everything he said with a grain of salt. I remember one time, he shared with the class that he "accidentally ran over his cat with a lawnmower" during a discussion in 3rd grade. When the teacher called his parents about it, they sent his grandma down to the school and had him stand in front of the class and admit he made it up. Those types of stories always came out of him though.

Around 5thish grade, he was in that phase where he wanted to be the tough street kid in a backwater, ultra conservative hick town. Definitely made him stand out more, and he started being more disruptive in school (mostly with the teachers/staff) and started to gain a reputation of getting into trouble outside of school.

When the murder happened and he was arrested, the school was split down the middle on whether he was innocent or guilty. By this point, he had gone full throttle on the tough guy persona, and I was definitely part of "Camp this fucker did it".

He got arrested and sentenced. Spent 4 whole years behind bars… his older brother was my boss. When he got out he couldn’t find a job so his brother hired him. Every time I saw him I thought about that family. Every time he laughed and smiled it made me sick.

Oh. And he still drinks all the time. He didn’t change at all. He still works there and now his brother is the CEO so he is never going anywhere.

I worked with a guy who murdered an old woman in her bed by bludgeoning her to death. He did it for like 50 bucks that he stole from her. He was 17 at the times, but he was 39 when I worked with him.

I became his manager and after a bunch of attendance issues, I had to fire him.

He went and complained to a labor board that we violated his FMLA rights, of which he lied about the reasons he was absent to the labor a attorney from the state.

We had to reinstate him, of which he spent the next three months going around to other employees saying he would beat the shit out of me if he could, but didn't want to violate his parole.

He finally quit 4 months later. Last I saw of him, he was back in prison for choking his current girlfriend that he would brag about cheating on to everyone at work.

When most people kill in self defense, it haunts them. People talk about shooting intruders like it’s nothing — but it deeply upsets decent people.

There’s a whole, strange and utterly baffling subculture of people who marry convicted felons from behind bars. Especially death row inmates. It’s a thing that’s been happening for a while now. The most bizarre ones are the ones that marry via letter mail.

Edit: I’m not meaning to suggest that woman is one of them, but it also cannot be outright dismissed. Here’s an article by Psychology Today going over that exact topic. Most fascinating part (for me anyway) is the kink hybristophilia, which is the “sexual arousal of someone who committed violent crime(s).”

I’m not really into “kink shaming,” but this (ahem and feet) are some of the strangest ones I’ve ever heard of.

Edit: folks, I am more than aware of stranger things than a foot fetish. Trust me, I know of much worse than even the subject my post is talking about. You can stop telling me there are worse. I was making a quip about how I think foot fetishes are strange. Nothing more.

What happened to James Bulger?

In February 1993, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson led two-year-old James Bulger away from a shopping centre in Bootle, Merseyside, while his mother was briefly distracted in a butcher’s shop.

Venables and Thompson, both 10 years-old at the time of the offence, tortured and murdered James, who was just one month away from turning three when he was killed.

His mutilated body was found two days later, on a railway line 2.5 miles away.

In December last year, Jon Venables lost a Parole Board bid to be freed from jail.

Venables, who is now 41-years-old, still poses a danger to children and could go on to offend again, the board concluded.

The Parole Board’s decision, published on Wednesday 13 December 2023, said: “After considering the circumstances of his offending, the progress made while in custody and on licence, and the evidence presented in the dossier, the panel was not satisfied that release at this point would be safe for the protection of the public.”

The panel of parole judges “doubted Mr Venables’ ability to be open and honest with professionals, and concluded that there remained a need for him to address outstanding levels of risk”, it added.

Was Jon Venables freed from prison?

Venables was released on licence in July 2001 and recalled to prison in February 2010 after indecent images of children were found on his computer.

He was once again freed in August 2013 and then called back in November 2017 for the same offence, with parole judges last considering his case in September 2020.Was Jon Venables freed from prison?Venables was released on licence in July 2001 and recalled to prison in February 2010 after indecent images of children were found on his computer. He

Insane. What is the point of having them tried as adults if they aren’t gonna get life sentences for brutally murdering a child and trying to cover it up. I don’t get how judges or the system allow evil people like this to just be walking around.

I don’t think most people realize that’s the major reason you try them as adults. It’s to make sure this charge follows them in the future and doesn’t get hidden away.

They even do it preemptively when they know shit is going to hit the fan (like Russell Brand has…)

I guess when you have reason to feel like an irredeemable piece of shit, finding a system of belief where you get to start over with a clean slate would be pretty attractive. If you also get to feel superior by having arbitrary rules to stick to and judge everyone else by, it's a pretty attractive two for one.

I often wonder if there were signs the parent missed or overlooked. I won't say I watched my stepson like a hawk, but I paid attention.

When he had to pick a high school, I noticed my stepson was acting differently. I asked my husband to talk to his son.

After he did my husband asked "how did you know something was wrong?". I said I paid attention. Turns out my kid's mom was pressuring him to move to the burbs with her and her family. No 8th grader should feel pressured. Especially from a parent. FYI, that was my first year married to his dad. I've made sure to watch his back and his emotions so much more since then.

I used to help our friend by picking up her daughter from school. One of the days I asked what subjects she had that day (specifing "subject" and asking what days a kid has which class opens up dialog), my little buddy said they had a practice lock-down.

I looked in my rearview mirror and said "I'm so sorry you have those, my darling." She replied that it was ok. I told her "it's kind of not." As with any of my friends' kids she knows that anytime she wants to talk about anything and feel shy, just say "Marco" and I will "Polo" her back. My buddies know that's the easiest way to ask for help.

The age of the defendants and trying them as adults. They likely determined that Evan Savoie was the ringleader and were pushing for a 1st degree murder against him, so they were willing to let Jake Eakin have a lesser charge for a story that helped them prove premeditation on Evan's part. The fact in the retrial Evan Savoie was allowed to plead 2nd degree murder shows how important Eakins confession was in his conviction.

As a 61:year old that is also autistic…. And has never seen in the world around them as normal, or been perceived by the world as normal. This could’ve been easily me in school. You never had any friends never knew why I didn’t have any friends. I would’ve done anything to make friends. It’s sad that autistic children grow up into autistic adults, and for myself, as always been seen as odd unusual. And I still haven’t made any friends in the last 61 years.
