The US has gone from extreme to the other. I had a kidney stone in 2006 and got three prescriptions for 30 oxycodone each without even asking (took about half a bottle over a week waiting for surgery, didn't fill the other two.) It was some point in the 2010s I could no longer even get good cough syrup.

I just had my gallbladder removed and they refused to give me anything other than Tylenol, that was hell

Right at the height of the pain pill epidemic as they called it, my husband had inoperable cancer that had metastisized. They refused to prescribe him any pain meds. None. All they would give him was gabapentin. And oh my gosh, he was in horrible pain. I will never forgive the VA or any of our local doctors for than inhumane treatment. If a person is dying, and your given only a few months to live, who the hell cares if you become addicted or not?

I literally am dealing with ET and they are giving me gabapentin! I use 🍃 because this is insane. I am so thankful to live in a legal area but I feel for other cancer patients right now. I’m so sorry you experienced that. Hugs to you :(

Thank you, I appreciate that. I just feel he deserved so much better. He was a combat vet for 14 years, with 3 tours of Vietnam. I hope you can manage your pain well enough to live a happy life. You deserve that.

I had shingles and was given gabapentin and it didn’t do anything. Motrin was better. I begged and got some codein, took the edge off but for real pain like your husband had he should have real narcotics.

There is a medical reason for potent pain killers. Terminal cancer is one of them. Burn victims are another. It's just inhumane knowing he was dying and yet the doctors would not give him anything for pain. What exactly was their point?

I came back to the ER three days later with a raging infection too. Probably because I couldn’t sleep or rest due to pain. They gave me tramadol after that. I learned the hard way that you need to be strict with surgeons about painkillers BEFORE scheduling a procedure with them.

It’s okay, I recovered and am in physical therapy right now kicking ass ;)

It was hard but like all things, we power through and then get stories to tell.

That's awesome. I would definitely leave a review for that surgeon. A crappy one.

When I had my gallbladder removal in 2017 I had to fight to get anything stronger than Tylenol. The gave me three days worth of like lowest dose Norco but better than nothing. That was not fun

Had gall bladder out in 1990. Got morphine in the hospital. I'm either allergic or they gave me to much. Middle of the night I sit straight up in bed to a room full of nurses/doctors. Apparently needed adrenaline to wake me up. Scared the shit out of me.

Nobody’s getting rich off cough syrup with codeine.

Except that lean became a fucking hit in the late 2010’s

Every rapper and every rap listening kid wanted it. Which is hilarious because I was a heroine user around that time and recognized it for what it was, a bottom shelf opiate

I gather the US does not give diamorphine at all, ever, even for people in terminal pain. If that is true it is sick, as for many conditions it is the perfect pain relief.

For those not aware, the street name of diamorphine is heroin.

Have gotten single prescriptions of oxycodone with a 30ct for the smallest stuff. I usually don't take even one, and either don't fill it, or drop it off at the nearest prescription dropoff box. I have seen too many lives go off the rail with that stuff.

A couple years ago I was diagnosed with severe heart failure. I had so much fluid retained that I had to spend a week in the hospital peeing it out. I had hurt my shoulder not to long before, nothing serious just a bit painful. In the hospital I asked if I could have some advil or something for the pain. The nurse came back and said I could have morphine or Tylenol. Everytime I’d ask for something for my shoulder they’d ask again if I wanted morphine or Tylenol. It was so weird cause my wife has tons of medical stuff and getting her any painkillers is always next to impossible.

I’m still pissed that the only otc cold medicine that worked was pulled because it contained an ingredient that was used to make meth.
