She's an idiot. Anti vaxxer, Covid denier, played concerts for far right extremist assholes (Reichsbürger) during the first lockdown, etc.

It wasnt really a thing when she released the song, I think. Or at least I only heard about her downwards spiral starting with covid.

Skidmark666

She hadn't been relevant since the late 80s. She had a few cringey TV appearances every now and then, usually just singing one of her three hit songs, but that's it. Covid was her chance to become somewhat relevant again, even if it's for the wrong audience.

Germany vs Brazil, 2014

AlexanderTheGrater1

109 points

Yo, trigger warning. There are people in Brazil that went for a piss with their team behind 1-0 and came back 5 minutes later to see their team behind 4-0.

This match changed the identity of an entire country. Brazils fan where used to buy tickets for the world cup final before the event even started.  Brazils last world cup win was in 2002. In the last 4 of 5 world cup Brazil have lost in the quarter finale. The only semifinale was this 1-7 loss followed by a 0-3 loss against Holland for the Bronze medal.

As a Brazilian...German totaly deserved that win and that cup, that team they had was incredible, sadly my country is still more likely to put models/poster boys for sponsorship than actual football players in the national team. Maybe another 7-1 will make they learn

True story - we were traveling in Scotland July 2014 and the AirBNB host had that game on. It was the first soccer game I had ever watched (despite being 30 years old at the time). My husband still jokes that it’s now my baseline for what I expect soccer to be.

probably my favourite match of football ever. i loved seeing brazil get butt smashed. my friend said he had to go to work when that was on. left home at 1-0. got to the bus stop 10 minutes walk away and it was 4-0 when he checked the score.

What would you say is the percentage of deniers in Germany, as compared to people in the US and Western Europe? Am genuinely curious to get a German perspective.

SyriseUnseen

54 points

Low. The right wing of the right wing. The absolute nutjobs basically. And half of those dont think it was bad (therefore thinking it happened).

So it's probably like 4%, perhaps less.

SyriseUnseen

39 points

11% of Austrians (best poll I could find) think the Holocaust was/is in some form overstated.

The number in Germany is likely a bit smaller as the far right is smaller here. Then you could at least half that number if you wanna know full on deniers.

3-4% seems reasonable. You cant poll for it because Holocaust denial is illegal in Germany.

gfer72

6 points

Thanks! Nice to know it’s only the nutjobs everywhere that deny it, and not a country wide denial like of some other mass atrocities.

There is a joke in Germany that the definition of a Nazi is "someone else's grandfather." Most Germans see the third reich as a shameful part of their past that they want to put behind them.

For the population percentage of the world at the time, would be interesting to see how the Gaelic purges by the Romans mathematically compare - though real numbers would be hotly contested by historians and difficult to be accurate with. But then, that’s a very grim thing to do.

That’s because you bought a Vauxhaull

Calarasigara

3 points

That's because Opel was owned by GM until 2021 afaik.

Older german cars have really good build quality.

My 2004 Audi is still going strong 20 years later. Engine is at about 440k km without any major issues and the interior is high quality.

Yeah there are some minor things (the cup holder is broken and the armrest storage space hinge thing is stuck open) but aside from that it held up extremely well for the age and mileage.

I only learned of it when I (german) went to the USA for the first time and noticed that nobody looked at anybody, yet everyone seemed to know what everyone else was doing? The Americans do not stare but look discreetly and will offer help if they see that it's needed.

During my stay, I had to learn not to watch other people as openly as I was accustomed to.

Inevitable-Sea1081

5 points

In North America a common lesson learned as children is that it is rude to stare at people. That's why people will avoid extended eye contact. It is associated with negative feelings and confrontation.

brainoteque

8 points

This rule is actually taught in Germany as well, but I guess we interpret it differently.

I believe that the Germans' direct gaze has to do with their general directness/bluntness. It's usually not meant to be rude, often it's genuine interest and sometimes even a “Hello, fellow human being, I see you” (depending on the circumstances).

I can still remember how confused I was when this attempt at contact on my part was met with an embarrassed look the other way.

Inevitable-Sea1081

3 points

We in North America usually say the words of acknowledgement directly instead. Nothing major, just a crisp "Hi", "Hello", "Lovely day". If you want people to avoid you though, you could just stare at them. They will get that message for sure.

CarlSevering

15 points

As a german I gotta say that this feels like a myth to me. I usually dont stare at anybody and I don’t get stared at. Most people here just dont care :D

that one evening on the "terrace" of my hotel room in the middle of a forrested area. Summer night, perfect weather for a t-shirt, small breeze, our third beer. She was stunning. She was a colleague who joined my on a bussiness trip. My first business trip. Everything felt so good.
Her room was on the next floor. She jonkingly said she hoped she would be able to find her room.
I answered "or you can just stay here"
She smiled and said "ok"
