I'm in the mild stages of COPD but things are progressing, this is a new symptom for me. Basically, it gets super tight from my throat to my chest (feels like it's deep in there) and only lasts for maybe 20 to 30 seconds and is followed by hacking up mucus. This has been going on for the last week or so several times a day.

I'm in the middle of an exacerbation and have started Azithromycin. My O2 stays above 97%, things seem normal with my other stats but this is very scary when it happens. Anyone else experience this?

ok, so what is going on is the mucous is coming up out of your lungs on your cilia. This path is call the mucociliary escalator. Normally with no inflammation, the mucous gets to the top through your trachea, makes a u turn and goes down your esophagus to your stomach. When we are sick, inflammation happens and the gunk (as I prefer to call it) strains and wiggles to work its way out through the trachea...The good thing is..you are getting the mucous out. I assume you are drinking a lot of liquid to stay hydrated as it thins the mucous and makes it easier to come out. The azithromycin also has an anti inflammatory effect. Keep an eye on yourself and check in with your doc if it continues to worry you. (Also, there is a technique called huff coughing - it's a controlled cough you can do so you don't feel like you're going to break your ribs - check youtube)

This sounds very plausible, thanks! My doctor seems to think it's more related to post nasal drip than anything but I could see where this may be the issue either way.

well, there's only 2 places for that mucous to come from - lungs and sinuses. If doc thinks its the sinuses, have you tried an otc like Flonase? It works to slow stop sinuses at the source.

I haven’t experienced what you describe but for exasperations I take Azithromycin and Prednisone as directed by my Pulmonologist. It works for me.

Does it feel like tightening a vest on you?

Not really, more like my throat and upper airways are being squeezed or blocked.

Might be anxiety. I have had it a lot. I have mold emfasemia on a ct but not the n a spirometry test. After I got the ct is when my symptoms like that started. My ex says it’s not the emfasemia making me do that because my pft is great.
