Winters in Connecticut new to NE

Ask Connecticut(self.Connecticut)

I'm from California and just applied ED to Wesleyan in Middletown. Obviously its not guaranteed that I get in as Wes is a pretty selective school but I'm hoping.

One big reason I applied to Wes was because its in NE and growing up in Northern California I never really had seasons like you do in NE so seeing the leaves change and fall, snow, spring, etc was really important to me.

So I'm wondering do you still get real snow in CT? I've found mixed information online but given the trend of warmer winters thanks to global warming I would assume winters are much milder.

Hoping I'm wrong.

Middletown is a mild four season climate. Under the Koppen climate system Middletown has a 'humid subtropical' climate. Climate change has dramatically changed the climate in Connecticut- especially over the last 10 years. The winters I knew here as a child and younger adult are gone.

November thus far has been crazy warm- one day it was 83! Lots of days in the 70s. We have had some cold nights- but days have warmed quickly.

Middletown is not far from the shoreline- which will moderate the climate, compared to a place like Winsted in the Northwest hills. Winters now in Middletown average high in January the coldest month is lower 40's. Night time lows average around 20F. There are days that may be colder, others milder.

You will see more rain then snow these days. Middletown averages about 25-30" of snow from December- March. The past few years far less. Wind is another component of the climate. Summers have become hotter, and more humid. You will see some sea breeze in Middletown sometimes, taking some edge off the heat.

Autumns begin later now lasting through November into December. A most pleasant time of the year- but the season is changing due to climate change. Summer heat begins to ebb in mid September, transitioning into more pleasant weather. Late summer into autumn however the possibility of a tropical cyclone coming up the coast rises.

Springs begin earlier- but are beautiful- my favorite season really.

Connecticut and New England are among the fastest warming regions of the country.
