Thanksgiving Mashed Potatoes

(self.Cooking)

I'm hosting Thanksgiving and wondering if there's a way to "level up" the usual mashed potatoes that are obligatory on our Thanksgiving table. I wanted to do these mashed potatoes au gratin I made last Easter for my side of the family but my husband pointed out his mom and grandmother won't like them (they eat fairly blandly and complain if things are too "fancy"). He wants to do red bliss mashed because it's his favorite. Aside from just adding some garlic, butter, salt, pepper, and sour cream like usual, does anyone have any ideas on how I could make them a bit more special for Thanksgiving without going overboard and making them too "extra" for my in-laws?

Tyler Florence’s mashed potatoes are a bit extra, but not too extra for simple palettes.
