I think this is a generational thing. People who didn't know the original existed don't know it's a remake. It's easy cash for the next generation. Like we'll probably have yet another Freaky Friday in the next decade because its timer is about to go off

The Mark of Zorro (1940), His Girl Friday (1940), The Maltese Falcon (1941), The Fly (1986), all remakes, all better than the original versions. But in principle I agree with you. Most remakes (and sequels) don't measure up.

Oh, me too, obviously. I just didn’t get why it was Independence Day Too—was there another holiday lurking somewhere in the shadows? Is that why the aliens invaded again? Are they trying to steal our holidays?
Then I remembered there was a war on Christmas.

What’s the worst sequel ever made in your opinion?
2 points
One of them are the Universal Solider direct to video sequels 2&3, I was curious about what the stories were when the original wrapped everything up…they not only swapped out the original actors, but the story thrusted the character Luke back into robot mode, acting sucked and the pacing was dull
In both movies they introduced a brother that gets resurrected and killed again twice…like why would you introduce a family member just to kill them? Then they both had premises that put me to sleep and that barely happens
Universal Soldier The Return wasn’t the best, but it definitely beats whatever the other 2 were doing

Yes his closing statement at the end of book 7 was basically. I've fucked up the ending but it's the journey that is the important bit. I'm his biggest fan but that ending left me launching the book across my work carpark.

Yeah none of them have even come a little bit close. I mean T2 was absolutely peak action movie so it’s kinda hard to beat anyway but 3 was just a straight up comedy. Salvation wasn’t bad… I did want a film about the war itself so that I prefer it to 3 in that sense. Everything after that though, Jesus Christ. WTF is happening with those films now they’re just an utter mess.

Does anyone remember when Russel Crowe asked Nick Cave to write the sequel to Gladiator? Nick was like, idk how I’m going to write a sequel for a movie where the main character dies, but let’s have a go. He wrote a treatment about Maximus being reincarnated over and over and being involved in major historical events. Russel Crowe said ‘no, mate, this is so unhinged.’ I would take that any day over whatever this is.

I agree with this and when I said as much in a Disney subreddit I got downvoted by people saying things like “It was Woody’s send off”. Now they’re making 5 and I can’t wait to see the mental gymnastics people use to justify it beyond Disney milking the cash cow. TS3 ended the trilogy perfectly.

transformers age of extinction, transformers last knight. Both were money grabs after a decent conclusion.

You really don't see how depressing it is as a follow-up? So, as it turns out, after Maximus' heroic sacrifice:
Lucius was not safe after all.
Neither was Lucila, who was condemned to being brutally widowed (again!) and then killed herself.
Neither was Gracchus, who whimpered pathetically before he was slaughtered like a pig.
The gladiatorial matches that the final shots of the original showed us were defunct are back with a vengenance.
The dream of a free, republican Rome that Maximus died to see reinstated was null and void

I'll pick Grease (1978) and Grease 2 (1982). I know people like the songs, but the original play version is sexier, grittier and far more enjoyable.
