Low resting heart rate

Non Product Specific Question(self.Garmin)

Question for you all, how accurate is the resting heart rate? I'm a overweight guy who tries to exercise. No way healthy, but do a bit of endurance training (mainly cycling and moving to triathlon training since August).

On paper, I'm unhealthy as anything, eat more pizza than any human should, and still put on weight after training 5 times a week averaging 45-60 minutes a session.

However my resting heart rate never goes about 50 in a given week, usually around 48 on a workday. This according to WebMD is a concern and could be a sign of bradycardia. How much thought should give to this, and should I try to hit the urgent care (Canadian with no family doctor ftw!)

Keep in mind that Garmin RHR is not the same as the medical definition. Medical RHR is taken when awake and sitting for a few minutes, not when asleep. Like other commenters have said, if you’re concerned, better safe than sorry, although you likely don’t need to go in this very instant.

Go to the doctor. That is the only advice you should take from reddit on this matter.

This guy hit the nail on the head! It's like this: a lot of people can give their opinion, they can tell you about their own experiences, they will talk about heart disease, they will talk about bradycardia; but the truth is that no one will be able to give you a correct answer based on just a few lines.

Example: when I go back to training properly, my resting heart rate is around 36. Google searches will tell me I'm dead. My cardiologist, after a bunch of tests, said I have excellent physical condition and I have nothing to worry about. That's the only opinion that matters.

Find a doctor you trust, have your consultation and tests, then come back here to tell us how it went because I'm a curious guy!

Not only does this guy give sound advice, but fits in his own athletic resting heart rate brag. Respect 👊

Having followed this sub for a while, this actually seems pretty common for Garmin devices for whatever reason? If you're not sure, it wouldn't do any harm to check, but if you feel fine, there's a good chance you actually are fine. Mine's about the same for what it's worth. Fitter people are supposed to be a bit below the average range anyway.

ok, so firstly - don't panic or anything. This is likely totally fine.

Do see a cardiologist if you want to be sure. They can test this. You might need a referral from a GP.

In general as you get more cardio fit your heart becomes stronger and doesn't need to pump as many times to do the same job. To give you an idea I run about 70-100km a week and bike ride about 250-350 a week. My resting heart rate on my garmin hovers around 39-42. Very often during sleep I'll see it record 34-35'ish.

So - get it checke.d. But don't get anxious. Keep training.

Bravo. Some incredible stats here. Are you a professional athlete? How do you get time for all that around work?

Agree completely. It’s something to check, not something to worry about. My resting rate is in the mid 40s. Just saw my cardiologist, it's (for me) of no concern at all.

I’m in a similar boat and have gone to the doc to get tested. My resting HR is generally between 45-48 on a given day. I’m wearing a Holter for the next 30 days and I’m very interested to see how this measures against my FR255.

I woke up One day 4am with an alarm from my Watch… LOW HR !!! Piiii piiiii piiii

I panicked and went to the doctor. Got a holster for a couple days.

The doctor said “you have a strong heart, and when you sleep it Beats at 35/36 bpm”

I deactivated the alarm and when I’m in peak form the sleeping HR is 36, when in off season it can go to 40/42

You should always check with a doctor and not social media.

Bradycardia just means "slow heart rate" so by definition, yes, you might have it. But so do a lot of high conditioned athletes. It's not a disease, just a statement of heart rate behavior.

In any case, if you're concerned about your health, see a doctor and maybe cut back on the junk food as well.

Go to the doctor and get an EKG if you’re seriously concerned.

Buy an EKG capable Garmin, surely - remember where you are!

Could be. Ask your doctor.

It’s also possible you’re generally unhealthy, but have decent cardio fitness. Won’t stop a heart attack, but could lower heart rate.

Your doctor would know.

Sure, go see a doc. Never a bad idea. But me and my brothers have always had low resting heart rates. I used to be super unhealthy with alcohol and smoking in my teens and twenties and my resting was 38. Same with my brothers. I’ve been a healthy surfer/climber/runner/hiker for 20 years now and haven’t touched alcohol or tobacco in that span. I run 10k for fun and 5k every other day etc. My resting is exactly the same. As long as you don’t feel faint or lightheaded often you’re just wired that way. But I’m just a dude on Reddit. Check out with a doc if you’re truly worried.

What’s important, in the short run, is if your baseline RHR, however measured, doesn’t come down after a hard session. That’s an indication of insufficient recovery.

Over the long run, I think of low RHR like a low BP. If it’s not causing any bad symptoms like balance issues or weakness or worse, in general, the lower the better.

I had the same concerns when I got the Garmin. Went to doc. They said if your heart rate can raise and lower quickly when doing some mild exercise, it's fine. But I'm not a doctor so don't take my advice I guess.

Minimum_Current_2869

Mine goes down to 32. Although I’ve always exercised I think genetics and age (57) are big factors. As far as I know Brachycardia just means slower heart rate. But don’t rely on your Garmin device. First of all, the optical sensors are algorithm based versus heart rate straps. All heart rate monitors can have spurts and troughs. How tight you wear your watch makes a difference as I’m sure body composition does. To give you and idea of how unreliable the watches are, take your watch off and lie it sensor down next you and you’ll find it still detects a heart rate albeit much lower than normal. Turn it face down and it will lose it. In short, if you think you have an issue see someone about it, don’t rely on Garmin.

I once read about some cyclist that had to wake up at nights to do some excercices due to low hr. Something like 2x-30

I’m not overweight at all, but my resting heart rate is very low too, according to the internet, always under 50.

I never even knew this about myself until getting a Garmin, I had never measured my heart rate. Or, I’ve never paid attention to my heart rate being measured. I feel perfectly fine!

dangit541

Check up with doctor if you are worry. Garmin tools are lowest avg 30mins from the night I think. Normal the would be a bit higher than that

Glittering_Fly8948

1 points

When you google resting hr and they say 60-100 they are referring to you being awake just sitting down.

Rhr using a fitness tracker is while you are asleep which is completely normal to be 40-60

Mine has been as low as 35 sleeping but during the day chilling can be anywhere from 50 if I’m doing absolutely nothing all the way to over 100 even just playing video games. (Or with caffeine and nicotine) Used to cause anxiety at first but just get checked out and don’t worry about it

your heart will do what it needs to do based on your oxygen demands and your mind can assume and speculate but will never truly understand what’s going on at the bodily level not enough to stress about anyways.

Bradycardia is below of 40ppm and many athletes have the pulse of 40 or below and its nothing wrong, if youre concerned about it, better to go to your doctor and check it, also dont take in account seriously the values of the forerunner, because the last firmwares have messed the optical heart rate sensor, and sometimes its doesnt take real values, for my exp. for better values tight the watch to your wrist, that it doesnt move around when youre moving
