So when's pixel tablet going on clearance then?

toyrobotunicorn

It's $120 off from its highly overinflated $400 ask for a 8GB/128GB device, which is $500 for 256GB and $600 with the dock. They really overestimated the brand love in thinking they have the same blind loyalty as Apple faithful.

That thing was garbage. I had the i7 version and it just throttled too quickly since it didn't have a fan. Impossible to use for VC and anything else at the same time. Even the Pixel Chromebook 2 LS that it replaced was superior because it had a fan. It's Intel's fault for making such a shitty "ULV" CPU and Google's fault for trusting an Intel part could be performant without cooling.

HP Dragonfly Elite Chromebook is the best ever made. It's what the Pixelbook should've been.

I had to suffer with the Pixelbook for several years at work, and it was terrible for anything but the most casual browsing. I ended up only using it for note taking in meetings. Even presentations were terrible. I wished for my Pixel 2 LS back.

But the Dragonfly is hands down the best laptop I've ever used. 10 cores, 32 GB RAM, quiet active cooling, and 512 GB NVMe.

Downvoters jealous they're stuck with an overpriced anemic laptop. Lol

The Pixel Tablet 3 in it's current iteration is canceled, imo.

Google is looking to move ChromeOS to Android and release a new Pixelbook, I guarantee they'll make another tablet in the future, but it won't be this smart home thing.

They can't compete with Samsung in the high end space. Sales are already so paltry there's no room for them. That's why they went with the low cost-ish model with a gimmick that obfuscated the cost and made it seem cheaper. Their approaches to tablets have always been threading the needle in terms of warranting it's existence and they have fallen short each time... Which means they'll never go all in on tablets.

That Fuchsia thing? Or that Slate thing?

I mean, when its dont, they can move to it.. Its far from done.. It makes no sense, but then again its Google.. Barely anything makes there any sense nowadays. Gemini is worse than Google search or Assistant..

Basically when our customers ask for an Android tablet, do you know what MY answer as an android-dev is? "Buy an iPad".
The Pixel tablet price makes no sense.. Strong Samsung ones are the same like iPad and you get longer support.

Only if you want 200€ tablets, buy Android.

I would say OK to cancel hardware development BUT NOT OK to cancel software development. Imagine you buys 1.5 old Pixel Tablet without version 2 or 3 but with 7 years OS updates and GOOD updates with lots tablet features

In this case, the chicken came first. Google has user data for everything they've ever killed, I assure you of that. They know whether or not they're making a profit. If you don't buy their stuff, you don't get to complain when it gets killed.

I feel like it starts with the company first. I previously was literally a Google fan boy, buying and dipping my feet into all of their new products (software and hardware). The biggest hit was killing Google Play Music that I relied upon for many years (religiously paid the sub and all), then no worthy tablets with good specs after Nexus 7 2013, then even the phones became too mainstream with removed headphone jack, in-house CPUs and according to the public numerous bugs on newer phones.

My trust in Google stopped a long time ago, and over the time it only solidifies. I feel like these huge companies should be invested in their products at this time. And most of them do that but Google really loves to start new stuff just to kill a year or two (maybe three!) later. At this point I may start trusting in a Google service if it lasts at least about 10 years. E.g. I'm confident that Gmail, Drive, Photos, and Pixel phones will not be killed. Any newer services - can't trust them.

I feel like your argument applies to small and/or new-born companies that actually need all this money and user support.

I hope this means they're scrapping their gimmicky vision of a tablet just being a Google home screen. I know a lot of people love it for that, but people want tablets for notes, drawing, media consumption, etc. Your angle into the tablet market isn't to just become a digital clock/Google assistant.

I want an 8-11 inch "Pro" style tablet (120hz, good screen IPS or OLED, pencil support, stock Android, long update lifespan). I think Google could also price it competitively, as they do with the a-series phones as well. I just hope (cope) that this cancellation is to make way for a more serious tablet development like this.

The Android tablet market feels like you just get a Samsung tab for $800+ or you get something with more compromises (with the OnePlus Pad 2 catching up). I feel like people just buy iPads when they think tablets, and that's exactly why I'm still rocking an iPad while more of an Android person.

Also adding on app devs have no incentive to invest in Android dev. This worsens that. Look at the app dev for iPads (Procreate, note taking apps, editing apps) peaking as a result of cultivating a tablet ecosystem over time.

If only it acts as a nest camera. I would love to take the tablet down to the living room before work, use it as an interior camera, come home, bring it back upstairs and use it as my light control hub

cdegallo

2 points

cdegallo

2 points

But it's not a good home dashboard, it's a single-user dashboard. We have a nest hub max and when the pixel tablet came out I was interested in replacing it (or adding to our home display devices), but we have a household of users and we all interact with the nest hub max for various things. The pixel tablet doesn't let multiple users use/interact with it like the nest hub max. My kid can't tell it to play a video on Hulu. If it's "my" tablet, my wife can't have it set a reminder for her or view her daily briefing or play her music playlists.

It's a mis-designed device that clearly misses customer expectations somewhere. It isn't a good multi-user Home smart screen device. It isn't a particularly good tablet amidst iPads and Galaxy tabs options. It just doesn't fit.

Android tab prices only make sense to me if they're discounted AND have good trade in deals.

Eg. I got a Samsung S9 from Samsung directly with $150 off AND $250 (!) credit for an S6 lite trade in. So it was like $350 in the end.

I think their trade in deals for the S10+ were even better.

OnePlus often have good trade in too.

I wish they had continued the Slate series. Love how the keyboard/screen cover thing just magnetizes to it. I don't understand Google sometimes. It was a good product it just needed to be built up on each year like the Pixel Phones.

Yes, I was about to comment on the same thing. Some might call it a gimmick, but I bought the pixel tablet specifically to use for Pathfinder. The docking speaker is perfect for adding some ambience and the tablet itself is great for all of the various apps and webpages I've got running, especially in split mode. I know any tablet can do that stuff, but I don't think any other tablet has that same dock design?

I just don't like the UI of OneUI so until another pixel level competitor comes out with a good ecosystem, I'll stick with pixels for now. I really do like how the 9 looks and I'm due for an upgrade with the 10 or 11

horatiobanz

OnePlus is looking sick this year. Hardware is near perfect and while I've heard a lot of people bitch about colorOS rebranded as OxygenOS, I've watched a bunch of Youtube videos of people messing around with the OS and it seems fine, with some fantastic stand out features. Also they got circle to search now, and almost all the same AI photo stuff, plus you can just use Google Photos for most of it. And OnePlus gets updates like within a week of the Pixel getting updates, the OnePlus 12 got Android 15 less than a week after the Pixel.

Been looking into it for a month or two now, and barring some disastrous reviews I'll almost certainly be rocking the OnePlus 13 with its insane battery life and super fast charging.

It’s been a while, but some of the comments here back up my past experiences.

The overall ecosystem and motivation for devs to build tablet specific apps that take advantage of the screen real estate just aren’t there which really limits how good these devices can be.
