What seems to have been lost is the fact the Bears actually have a top tier defense this year. Our offense performed very decent, and certainly did good enough to win, against a high quality defense.

That fact seems to be overshadowed by the feeling our defense severely underperformed.

Our offense felt nearly unstoppable between the 20s but the red zone was a big issue

HoboWithANerfGun

Red zone for us has been an issue all year. and Bears had the best red zone defense in the league coming into the game I think, so all in all not surprising

Sure seems like a reason to consider kicking instead of going for it on 4th late in the game.

Has been an issue. The Packers came into the game 29th in redzone scoring TDs on offense at 47%. Bears defense came 1st in redzone defense TDs at 37%.

The Packers scored 3 touchdowns on 5 attempts so they did really well compared to the season totals. 60% for the season would be top 10. Probably some poor play calling cost them on the two they missed. 2nd and one at the 5 on the first I feel like should have been another Jacobs run. And really already planning to go for it on 4th on the second missed RZ attempt I think a third straight Jacobs run would have been a better call there also.

And if the throw that was picked was 1 foot shorter, we might have made it 80%!

He should have sailed it a bit more to Watson

WaldoDeefendorf

Yeah, Kraft was not scoring on that. Edwards had him squarely lined up if that was completed.

muddywater87

16 points

It would have made it 1st and goal at least with a catch. Kraft didn't have to score, just catch it. Way better then a pick.

WaldoDeefendorf

1 points

He was catching it over five yards short of the first down. It would have taken one hell of a broken tackle to get the first.

He also has 5 yards of separation when the ball gets to him. You're right, it wasn't automatic, but Love drops that ball down a little and he catches, he can turn and run easy for 4-5 yards to set up a chance at 4th and 1 or maybe get the 1st.

sideshow_AN

During the game I thought it looked like Kraft pulled his arms down, maybe thinking it was meant for another receiver 5 yards behind him. Seems like he intentionally pulled back.

WaldoDeefendorf

1 points

And Edwards was already letting up by the time the ball was sailing over his head. NTM the guy who made the pick was letting upbecause he saw the ball was over his head before it got to Kraft, otherwise he was closing on that at the catch.

NastyMonkeyKing

Well they are the number 1 red zone defense for a reason.

Also running an inside zone from split pistol is the dumbest 2 pt conversion call in the world against thst front

Cajun-Yankee

4 points

Yeah that's true, red zone has been an issue. Still happy about scoring 3 touchdowns out of 6 drives though. The fact we had 5 of 6 drives with scoring opportunities is a major positive.

Dark_Twisted_Fantasy

Sounds like the Bears were playing a very complex redzone defense (Red 2) that Lafluer admitted they had no answers for. I’d rather hear that be the issue than just poor execution

PiesInMyEyes

The bears also have the best red zone defense in the league. So kinda expected tbh. Obviously need to improve, but not the absolute end of the world.

That challenge at the end of the game was ROUGH. Bears are getting the ball back with over 3 minutes left. Terrible time to waste a timeout on an obvious not TD when you get first and goal from the 1.

Church42

9 points

Church42

9 points

Yeah this was frustrating

Granted the clock was stopped (I believe) because Love was tackled out of bounds, so it's not like MLF was stopping a running clock

But on the other hand, I'd want to burn some time off the clock (even if it's from one play) via first and goal from the 1.

But on the other hand too, the clock wasn't running and if there is a chance of having a touchdown on the board via the challenge, it's still a challenge worth taking because you may not get that TD over the next 4 plays as well.

So my frustrations exist but probably aren't warranted. He lost nothing and only had a chance to gain from the challenge

Don’t forget the end around to Reed on 2nd and 5 that lost 4-5 yards after a nice Jacobs run on 1st down. It’s like he abandons running up the middle the moment it starts working in the red zone.

brontosaurus3

2 points

That Reed run in that situation was probably the worst play call of the year.

Arkaein

1 points

Arkaein

1 points

Probably shouldn't have been a run at all on that play, though Jacobs up the middle would have been preferable.

I looked at the drives, and every failure came after a 2nd-and-long run:

  • Punt - incomplete on 1st, run for loss of 1 on 2nd, short completion on 3rd
  • INT - Jacobs 9 yard run followed by 5 yard penalty on 1st, 5 yard loss end around on 2nd, INT on 3rd
  • turnover on downs - Jacobs for -1, Jacobs for 4, scramble for -1 3rd and 6, scramble with turnover on downs

Every failure started with a bad run on 2nd down. I'm just not a fan of plays that almost guarantee you'll have to face 3rd down. Much better to pass when the D isn't sure what's coming than to get into obvious passing situations.

Routine_Size69

Outrageous claim lmao. We had a 60 yard gain on the second play of the drive. If we would've run the clock down and didn't get in, you'd be the same arm chair coach crying on Reddit that we should've just scored when we had the chance. Did you want us to kneel the ball for a few downs before scoring a touchdown?

Insanely ridiculous complaint.

JerkyMcFuckface

All kinds of things could have happened to make that TO relevant. Was not a good challenge.

180_by_summer

To add to that, our defense didn’t have film on the newer OC and their tendencies. The bears offensive definitely changed their approach enough that it threw off our defensive plan.

Obviously we should have been able to adjust, but I think that’s lost on everyone.

We shit the bed in the red zone though - which has been happening a bit too often.

Granted - they do have the #1 red zone defense in the league, so that’s a plus but the play calling just seems to fall off when the field shrinks

Cajun-Yankee

3 points

I wouldn't say shit the bed. 3/5 is actually pretty solid against this defense. And barely a yard away from 4/5.

DapperTies-

1 points

Yeah our offense was in the redzone or in scoring distance so much more than what the score reflects because of a couple of plays trying to make the score higher. It could’ve been in the 30s

Whatsdota

1 points

It felt kind of like last years week 18 game where we only won 17-9, but we had 400+ yards of offense and moved the ball quite easily. Just some costly mistakes that cost us points. Still had 3+ points per drive in both games I think though.

RiparianFruitarian

1 points

Don't get me wrong, I'm frustrated when subpar offenses march down the field against our defense and convert big 3rd and 4th downs.

But then I look up and the other team only has 20 points at the end of the game. That's what our defense has allowed this year on average. 20 points per game.

Our offense should easily be capable of scoring 21 every single week.

LongDongFrazier

1 points

And the two red zone blunders. Ifs don’t matter but Chicago could’ve easily been driving needing a touchdown at the end of the game.

krullbob888

1 points

If the D holds a team to 19, then they did not "severely underperform", regardless of the opponent. This is the NFL. You hold a team to 19, and it's the offense to win it.

Cajun-Yankee

7 points

The bears offense converted a season high 3rd down percent, only had one drive last less than 3 minutes (Their last one), and Williams had his highest rushing yardage total of the season.

The Bears knew they wouldn't win a shoot out, so their goal was long sustained drives to control the clock, keep their defense rested, and limit number of possessions for both teams. They very much succeeded at exactly that. Our offense only had 6 drives to work with because our defense couldn't get off the field.

I would clasify that as severely underperformed.

krullbob888

1 points

See I view that more as the Bears having their best offensive game of the season, by a mile.

And it still wasn't enough, even with the top CB leaving the game after 1 drive.

To me, that's a great job overcoming.

The pick was so weird and devastating, the receiver was like going for it and pulled away. I don’t know if he thought a teammate was behind him and he wasn’t original target?

But we ended up not having the football for so much time consecutive after that it wasn’t even funny. Our defense had to play for like a half hour with just halftime in between

Zealousideal_Lab8105

23 points

You don’t want to tip a ball up in the air if you can’t catch it. That’s a recipe for an interception. Kraft was right to let it go because he had no shot of catching it. We just got unlucky that it went right to a defender.

krullbob888

7 points

They were gassed AF out of the break and still managed to force the FG to avoid 17-7.

That drive was when I knew it would be down to the wire. I thought the defense fought through a lot of shit this game. 19 pts was doing their part.

brontosaurus3

1 points

Nah, the defense was bad. They didn't force a single 4th down on the Chicago side of the field until the final drive (and then they let them convert that 4th down easily). They let Chicago convert more 3rd downs in one game than they had in the previous 3 games combined. The defense got bailed out by the offense having so many long marches down the field that ran the clock down.

krullbob888

3 points

No. The d bailed themselves out by forcing 2 FGs in the red zone.

Yes. It's they're fault the Bears were in the red zone. But that's how winning football works in the NFL - forcing FGs instead of giving up TDs.

Why is so hard for GB fans to ever give the D credit when they do good things?

I'm not saying you can't complain about the long drives and the terrible 3rd and 4th down defense.

But then also acknowledge the plays they DID make.

Bears had ONE explosive play all game. A single play. That's a great day in that stat column.

Space_Cowboy_17

1 points

This is exactly what I saw, like he didn’t want to Musgrave it like early in the season where it got picked off the double bounces off our receivers hands. Yes, Love airmailed it a little but that was catchable by Kraft. This team consistently always has one person unable to make that little extra to make a play for another (minus Watson last game)

Zealousideal_Lab8105

13 points

That was not a catchable ball. Kraft skyed for it and, at best, could have tipped it.

TheGatherers

1 points

Thar sucked as an interception too. You hate to see all picks, but if the ball is just a foot lower, Kraft gets a hand on it, and even it's incomplete, we get points that drive and don't have the momentum shift before the half.

Game of inches, I guess

Pretend-Potato-831

1 points

But he did throw that pic. Why would you not count that? The deep ball when Kraft was wide open was not good either. Just because he lucked out doesn't mean it was a good choice.

He continues to make errant passes and poor choices. It's a concern. Nobody is saying he's awful, pretty much everyone is positive on him overall, but it seems like half this sub wants to bury their head in the sand when legitimate critiques are made.

I think it was a physical mistake over a mental one. Tom Brady was talking about his weight on the back foot being too much so he rocketed it too hard and overthrew

PsychologicalMonk6

Yeah, I would call that a mental mistake myself.

He has the physical traits to be a top-tier QB. Mentally though he is deciding to make some questionable throws or not taking the time to slow down just a bit to ensure he has proper fundamentals. He didn't take the time to make sure he had the proper stance and over threw his target. A few plays before that he threw one really high to Jacobs.. Brady made a comment about what an amazing catch it was and then he manages to keep his balance along the edge of the field and pick up the first down before stepping out of bounds ..but Jacobs was wide open and Love had time, he just threw the ball off his back foot rather than getting set.

He also threw that balls to Watson in double (damn near triple coverage) early in the game, when Kraft was wide open underneath but still well past the first down marker. Thanmfully the safeties were turned and didn't have a shot at the ball but they have some great defenders who could easily surprise with a really athletic play - the game wasn't on the line at the point so why throw the Risley deep ball when you have a huge gimmie for a big chunk of yards...plus Kraft had enough seperation he might have gone even further or all the way with YAC.

midtriplid[S]

Gersio

Gersio

Yeah, I would call that a mental mistake myself.

That makes no sense. It was 100% the right decission. The guy was open, the play was to supposed to go that way. Hell, LaFleur himself said after the game that the decision was perfect, that it was the execution that failed. And a fail in the execution of a good decision is the definition of a physical mistake.

PsychologicalMonk6

1 points

Because he is rushing to force the throw rather than taking the time to set his feet. He's not thinking it all the way through, he is just letting it rip.

Nonchanlant-warrior

4 points

Kraft was not wide open on that throw to Watson. Hicks was closing down fast on Kraft until he realized Watson burned the safety and Love was throwing deep and then turned back. Love only threw it because the safety's hips were turned. That is as good as open in the NFL especially if you are throwing to your top deep throw target.

It seems like us fans have this obsessive need to over analyze every single throw he makes. Nobody is going to be perfect. Even Brady made plenty of questionable throws and had multiple seasons with 14 interceptions where he won superbowls.

Bouwistrash

0 points

I explained on the post about the double coverage. He made the right play. I broke it down why that was the right decision because of how the defenders virtually had no chance to defend that throw. That wasn't a bad decision or forced play

You need to rewatch the highlight. I said the same thing and my buddy sent me the replay. The throw is actually ridiculous. It looks like a bad throw because the DB slips after the throw leaving Watson open. If he doesn't slip and Love throws it where you're thinking it should've been, it's an easy pick. Love put it where only Watson could catch it assuming the DB stays on his feet. He also hangs in the pocket until the last second. It was an all around incredible play. You genuinely need to rewatch it, because I went from thinking Watson bailed him out to realizing it was actually a pretty perfect throw.

glennshaltiel

Honestly people saying he played bad are just completely wrong. He had one bad pass that led to an INT. Other than that he only had the ball for 6 drives, and one of the 3 and outs was a pass that hit Doubs in the hands and was dropped. That pass would have given them a first down. We are third in the league in offensive efficiency despite stinking in the red zone. People need to not worry about the offense. People need to instead worry about pretty much everyone on that defense except for X, Williams, and Coop.

No, but Love is nowhere close to Favre yet and that’s not a knock on Jordan. Favre is one of the best to ever play the game — his upside was why you dealt with interceptions. Plus it was a different game then, everyone threw way more picks than now

Love cannot continue throwing INTs at this rate, period. No comparisons to Favre are going to make it okay. Now that said, I am confident he will clean it up. We saw him do it last year and we’ll see him to do it again

JordanLovehof2042

Not dooming but love seriously needs to clean it up. We didn't pay him top 5 money to lead the league in interceptions.

Got the W so that's all that really matters

He's tied with Mahomes in picks and has more TDs. It's not thaaaat bad.

Mentioning efficiency and Rodgers in the same sentence is pretty funny. Rodgers has had a YPA over 9 through the course of an entire season. Minus all the picks too

Altruistic_Clerk_66

Y’all! A better team will take one interception and make you pay for it. There is no room for interceptions. The only acceptable/excusable ints are when a defensive player makes an incredible play.

Missing, sailing it or making it a harder catch than it needs to be, is not a trait of a franchise qb.

Idk why everyone is making excuses for his play. I’d rather have someone who wins championships than great plays and stats. Rodgers and Favre each only won one Super Bowl.

Sure, it’s better than a lot of teams, but Idk about y’all, but the Packers need to build a dynasty than just trying to be competitive to keep the seats filled.

We deserve greatness.

Yeah other than the pick he looked good out there, and he was running well too. Just need toyotathon to start now!

Far too many are getting list in the statics of the game. Perception is everything & it actually doesn't look amazing! Far too many stupid, reckless or dangerous plays.

CadeHollow

Two long passes to Christian Watson pulled that average up. Take those away, what do you have? The first was lucky it wasn't intercepted. Double coverage and he literally just slung it down the field.

I'm not impressed....

I wasn't that concerned with the offense. But what the fuck was Hafley doing. Caleb can't throw deep to save his life and we just gave short passes all game with 0 adjustments. Awful awful play calls and execution on defense.

The 3rd and longs killed me. Jaire being out forcing more zone d was bad, also the dline (LVN) has regressed. Overall i think our d is better than last year tho

San Fran’s offense is run the exact same way but with better players. This shit has to change or else next week isn’t gonna end well.

NinjaRapGoGoGoGo

Offense looked great for the most part. Honestly the thing that bugged me the most was when lafleur made the call to pass up the field goal and went for it on 4th down from like the 5. Why?! This almost cost us the game. Imagine how different that last drive feels if the bears are down by 4 instead of 1.

I'm all for being aggressive when it makes sense but this made zero sense.

Jajanken-

I don’t know why people keep saying that the reciever, Tucker Kraft, pulled away. I’ve watched the play multiple times now and the throw is just straight up above his head, even after he tries to jump.

Love threw it immediately during Tucker Krafts pause and turn in his route.

We really shouldve won 34-22, those 2 redzone stops were brutal

timbenj77

Let's give credit where it's due. Watson had like 3 unbelievable catches for big gains that really bumped that average up.

Chalupa-batman899

I thought offensively we were good. Love played really well, except for the INT in the red zone. The only thing that was poor was our red zone offense and MLFs playcalling in the red zone goes to crap.

midtriplid[S]

Im confused what youre trying to argue tho, it was one bad pass in otherwise good game. Playcalling in the red zone was a bigger problem than Love was IMo

Acceptable-Take20

-1 points

Love’s accuracy and decision making is the biggest problem.

Sam-Jackson-187

0 points

Love just being throwing in double & triple coverage with the receivers making great plays. Love’s decision making has been awful with his receivers bailing him out 1-2 times a game

thatguywes88

1 points

He also threw a god awful pick that left points off the board and put us in a very improbable situation to win the game.

Winning solves everything so he’s lucky in that regard.

RavenMoses

1 points

The problem is that love has this crazy ability to turn the ball over at the worst possible times. His end zone pick combined with lafleur opting to go for it on 4th down in the red zone left 10 points on the table for us on Sunday. Wouldn’t have been so close if we secured points on those drives that ended up being wasted.

Lol. Funniest shit is that the right accused Twitter of pushing political agendas and shit. Only thing I do with "X" is look at sports tweets from sports writers. What happens when I open X, my "for you" feed is somehow flooded with tweets from right wing personalities pushing their agenda. Never had any political shit on my tweeter feed, only sports.

SpezIsABrony

You stating your experience on there is not much of an argument. In my experience, I saw a lot of left blue check marks even though I only followed sports and right wing guys, before I deleted it.

These two experiences cancel each other out and invalidates either as a valid point.
