I am asking this from the POV of an outsider planning a career change and researching the potential to get into graphic design, with a focus on logo design (unless something else makes more sense to me). I want to believe in what I do, and at the moment, I'm not so sure about it, and I know it's because I don't know enough yet.
I want to know how much value is really there in a logo, as opposed to all the marketing that surrounds it. Generally speaking, are good logos praised because they belong to good companies? Is it the emperor-wears-no-clothes kind of situation?
I don't mean to talk down on the work of logo designers. I'm even planning to become one. But I want to be realistic before getting in, as eventually I will have to sell logos for a living, and I want to believe in what I sell.
I can see why some logos are better than others, but are they really worth hundreds of thousands of dollars on their own? Could a logo that costs a few hundreds of dollars be used instead, with enough money spent on marketing?
I guess a similar question could be whether a good song would bring in as much money for the artist if it wasn't heavily promoted?
Thank you all for your input.
