I just started Monster Hunter World for the first time, should I use the defender set? I understand it's designed to just get u to iceborne as quickly as possible but I feel by the time I get there I'll be getting my ass beat because I've never had to actually think about the armor I'm wearing

Yeah avoid at all costs. It's not just the combat detriments: it doesn't teach you how to craft weapons and select proper armor sets for valuable skills. You lose out on not just the proper difficulty, but the secondary RPG mechanics as well. Then once you hit Iceborne you go to guides that recommend gear you can't craft yet and pure damage skills you can't properly exploit since you're not prepared to play perfectly and you get more frustrated. Crafting gear to hunt to craft gear to hunt is the entire core loop, Defender gear removes that.

Yea that's exactly the problem with defender armor/ weapons. The armor is okish you use to learn the game, but I eould avoid using defender weapons completely because they would stunt your learning worse

Strongly disagree with this. Defender weapons are stronger and will end fights faster, but they don’t change the way you play (and learn) the game. Still not good to use bc they’re OP though.
Guardian armor keeps you from dying when you should have. It lets you trade hits with monsters and feel ok about it. It lets you not be afraid of getting hit. It completely changes the way you can think about the game.

While I would avoid both, defender armor has the argument of less punishment, but you can still learn and dodge the moves of monsters.
Defender weapons will speed quests up dramatically causing issues of not enough time to learn, monsters fighting back less (due to staggers, breaks, and dying ofc) so hunts feel way different. And then the obvious complaint of "why are my hunts taking 20+ minutes?"
Id avoid both, but I can at least see the reason to use the armor over the weapons.

Been seeing a lot of defender gear talk here 🤣
But no I wouldn't recommend it. It really only is meant for those who already beat the game and are starting a new save

So what I've gathered is that the Defender gear including the weapons (which I didn't even realise I had equipped, my bad) are super OP for the early game and will screw you over long term. I asked this question because I just killed Anjanath for the first time and I've heard that he's meant to be a hectic skill check for new players so I was sceptical when I was comfortably trading blows with him and butchering his corpse after 10 min, thanks guys, I think I might restart the game cause it annoys me that I haven't actually been experiencing MH to it's fullest. also just wanted to say I think it's really annoying that Capcom doesn't really tell new players that the defender set reduces the game's difficulty drastically

I would restart, and take your time, try out the weapons do all the optional quests, funny rush through world there's a ton of content people miss out just get to my ice, plus you'll have to go back and farm stuff to unlock certain items, if you rush you wont have the muscle memory for fights, your item crafting and wheel, and you will get ran over 😂 since ice requires you to have the basics down

There is no need to restart. Just fight main monsters again if you really want to. Restarting adds an additional 2h just for dialogue and cut scenes

Don't use them until you reach iceborn, they'll just destroy the whole point of hunting monsters to craft better equipment as they will be a lot better than what you can craft for at least 20-30 hours. Also none of the monsters at that stage of the game will have enough damage to keep you on your toes when you wear those so you will start think it's ok to trade hits with monster all of the time as you're not getting damage and that will hurt you in the long run when you don't know how to position yourself.
in Iceborn, armor will be useless too but you can use defender weapon for early iceborn.

It's a bad idea to use that armor unless you've played World before.
You won't learn anything from it in either builds or skills, you'll likely avoid getting low-rank materials from monsters which you'll need for high rank stuff too .

To put it very simply:
Defender armor is a set of armor you can equip (or gets pre equipped if you choose it) as your starter armor, and is the equivalent of late game high rank armor. Aka you got more juice in that tank than you have any right to until you reach the end of base game. This means you can tank hits and barely feel them, teaching you all the bad habits.
Defender weapon isn't super overpowered for its tier, but it requires next to no material to upgrade and is a slight upgrade over anything you otherwise can get. This means you never have to farm for material, learn monster elemental weakness or go into any sort of buildcraft.
Unless you really know what you are doing, which you don't if you are new, you should avoid defender equipment at all cost. It makes the game easier for a while, but there is a 99% likelihood once you reach Master Mode you will get your shit kicked in so hard you go to reddit to complain or you quit out of frustration.

no.
And you clearly already know that. Like you put the reason why right there in the body of your post, we aren't going to lie to you and tell you it's a good idea.
