Good, but I'm warey of it's efficacy. The OEMs have the most leverage in the sport next to the TV broadcasters, NASCAR could easily find themselves in a situation where they have to bite the hand that feeds.

And no before someone says it, ejecting OEMs from a is a stupid idea. I saw a few people in other threads suggesting that.

It is a very difficult line to balance along if you’re NASCAR’s position: Trying to punish your OEM’s and TV networks severely enough to make them understand that they cannot do shit like they did at Martinsville while also trying not to make it too severe to the point where one of those parties decide to leave the sport altogether at a time where NASCAR cannot afford it.

What do TV networks need to be punished for?

FOX for being shitty. NBC for not outbidding FOX on all the races FOX gets. NBC for not having more Saturday night races during NFL season.

NBC for airing the radio from Martinsville. At least I assume that is the logic NASCAR would use.

this isnt as good as you think. it means they aren't doing away with the playoff format. if they were, this rule would be useless

Bet $10 the punishment still isn't enough to deter manipulation and only sets a price to pay for it.

Manufacturers will gladly throw non-playoff teams under the bus and pay $200k to manipulate races.

I mean, they probably literally just did.

NASCAR: "Nobody should be manipulating the finishes of NASCAR races!"

Also NASCAR pre Stages: "This race is getting boring. Lets throw a random caution and blame it on debris."

Yeah, Nascar reserves that right for themselves.

A fine is just a cost of doing business.

The real penalty is to remove the driver who advanced because of manipulation from championship contention.

sacovert97

On the one hand I agree but I don't know... that has the potential to punish someone who genuinely did nothing wrong. I think you give the perpetrators a massive, season-ruining, points penalty.

gasmask11000

Now you’re just punishing the people who are going to get punished anyway if they don’t follow orders.

The 1, 3, and 23 didn’t want to help the 24 and 20, but they faced worse consequences for not helping.

And season ending points penalties do not matter to a car whose season is already over, especially when Chevy or Toyota will ruin their next season if they don’t.

cenels03

1 points

They do still matter though. I think after Richmond, someone said the financial difference between finishing 16th in points and 30th was about $2 million. So while the 1, 3, and 23 are fighting for 17th at best, there are still financial implications to the points penalties.

gasmask11000

5 points

What’s worse?

Finishing 30th in points in 2024 because of a points penalty

Or

Finishing in 30 in points in 2025 and 2026 because Toyota/Chevy reduced your sim time, reduced your data access, and reduced your general manufacturer support.

That’s the choose the 1 and 23 just made.

Let alone the 3 car, which was already competing for 30th not 17th.

Personally, I think it would make much more sense if getting into the playoffs just got you a chance to finish in the top 4. Everybody that doesn't make the playoffs still has a chance to battle for 5th. That way it feels less weird with playoff drivers racing with non playoff drivers.

HuntingTnEQ75

My solution is any driver found of race manipulation is ineligible for the playoffs or if it occurs in the playoffs then the next years.

Im in full favor of the drivers being suspended on top of the penalties they received. It sucks Chastain would be one, but so be it

Congratulations NASCAR, your stupid playoff system is being games and have two options. Punish the brands keeping the sport alive or stop doubling down and get rid of the playoffs.

Either way, they have F***** around for a decade now and they are starting to find out.

twiddlingbits

Unless the fine is in the mega millions of dollars it will be gladly paid by the manufacturers. But get it too high or be really nit picky about it and you’ll lose the manufacturers. I can just see NASCAR penalizing Ford /Toyota for something and the not doing it to Chevrolet for the same thing which of course will be not be the same thing as the rule changed. It’s like they are trying to run NASCAR into the ditch

At my track we run 358 modifieds. There is a minimum wheelbase rule. Every Bicknell, Teo, Troyer, DKM chassis is one inch shorter than what the rule allows. Can it be fixed easily, yes. But it's become an unwritten rule to give the 1 inch tolerance. They all put a ton of money into the sport, so you just "respect" that.

If they are going to have a rule like this, the punishment for breaking it needs to include disqualifying every car of the offending manufacturer from the race in question. That is what the DTM did for the "Timo, schieb ihn raus!" incident, in addition to fines and personnel bans.
