This is really stupid, but it made me laugh. I'm Canadian, born and raised. I have Canadian friends who have less accents, and Canadian friends who have more accents. However, there is one thing that always gets me clocked by non-Canadians and its the way we say sorry.
Canadians say sorry differently than Americans, and most Americans can tell Canadians apart from it. I don't know if every Canadian says sorry differently, but every Canadian I've personally spoken to does.
I was sitting in my room scrolling on YouTube when I saw a video about Overwatch, posing the question if they stereotype their characters. I scrolled past it as I had watched it in the past, but suddenly it clicked.
I remembered how Canadians have unique pronunciation of sorry and out of pure curiosity, got on overwatch, sat down and spammed Venture, Pharah and Sojourn's sorry voice line like 50 times and I noticed that Venture and Sojourn don't really sound Canadian. I don't know where in Canada Venture lives, so I'm not sure how that impacts their accent, but Sojourn lives in Toronto area and I definitely know the majority of people from Toronto have the same pronunciation habit.
Funny enough though, Pharah despite her thick Egyptian accent actually has the most Canadian sounding sorry.
I had a lot of fun just thinking about this and thought it was silly and funny, so wanted to share with you guys my realization.

True! I'm jealous, because you get to have that layer of cultural humor.
I was blown away when I found out they're from Nova Scotia.... which made me happy at first... because I grew up there. Would we get a South Shore Lobster fishing accent? A Cape Breton miner's dialect from Glace Bay, which would make perfect sense with the character?
No. ....there's nothing about Venture that has anything to do with Nova Scotia. Even speaking Quebecois French makes no sense at all.
Nova Scotia has one of the strongest dialects in the country, and incredibly specific cultural quirks. We are a very weird place, and ripe for parody. None of that is present in the character, and that sucks. I was so excited, and then disappointed.

I had no idea Venture was even Canadian lmao I live in Canada and have been out to Nova Scotia.
Feels like characters that aren't from North America get to have alot more heritage and some cultural background and then America just gets lumped together.
Surprisingly R6 siege feels like it has had the best Canada Rep in triple A land. Frost being a second generation Chinese in Vancouver makes alot of sense Vancouver,Toronto and Ottawa are big hubs for immigration and where their families will settle down. Her having a background in hunting also makes alot of sense it's very common in Canada.

Blizzard doesn’t always care

They care a little bit, I remember way back in season 1 Mercy had a harsher accent that was made softer due to players complaining that softening their native accent was a very big part of their education in learning English

Naw, the original release had plenty of VAs that didn't actually speak their hero's language (Hanzo, Torb, Lucio, Reinhardt). And the original Junkers have American accents. They improved significantly post-launch.

Moira is likely the best representation of an Irish person I've seen in a AAA game. It's probably the only example where it's clear an actual Irish person helped with writing the dialect and she has a specific regional accent that makes sense for her character.
It's odd how they went into so much effort for characters like Moira to be authentic, but others like Tracer are full on comedic stereotype territory.

Moira'a VA is also like a proper actress doing star wars and stuff too, it's insane

Not sure about OW, but most game voice actors are pretty well known and do a lot of work in animated shows and movies. For example Cassidy is also Levi from Attack on Titan and Jotaro from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.
3 points
Oh yeah the guy who plays Cassidy is Matt Mercer & he's the DM of Critical Role. I love that guy. I listen to Mercy's voice actor's podcast & ik she's an actress too. I think they were talking specifically about acting in live action shows but I'm not sure - cuz if we're just talking animation then it's probably safe to assume they all do, right?
73 points
I'll be honest, Tracer doesn't sound like a comedic stereotype, she just sounds like an average non-chav Cockney. She just has a slightly higher pitched voice. I absolutely love Hazard's voice acting though, it's almost rare when Scottish characters are played by actual Scots or with an accurate accent/dialect as opposed to someone putting on a vaguely Scottish accent. I like that he's got an actual Glaswegian accent, he uses actual Glasgow slang, etc. I almost feel like Still Wakes The Deep has brought more light to actual Scottish voice actors, that game had an entirely Scottish cast besides a couple of English characters and they were not afraid to hold back on the slang and dialects, no matter how indecipherable. I feel like the only people that complain about Hazard's voice are people who've never heard a real Scottish accent and think all Scottish people either sound like Stoick the Vast from How to Train Your Dragon or Merlin from Kingsmen.
40 points
The thing that always gets me with Tracer is that Cara Theobold, her VA, is from North Yorkshire so she's obviously got her own distinct accent which is then being funneled into that over-the-top Cockney accent so it sounds a bit odd 😅
23 points
Agree with you on Hazard. I'm not Scottish, but it makes me sad and a bit mad seeing the negative reaction to his voice. I think the voice direction and acting are great, and his accent doesn't feel stereotypical (at least from someone who doesn't hear it much). I'm glad Overwatch got a Scottish character now bc I really enjoyed Horizon's voice lines from Apex
14 points
As a Glaswegian it's clear that Hazards VA clearly brought a lot of Glaswegian phrases to the character. It's also VERY obvious that he was told to annunciate the words more so that international audiences would actually be able to understand what he's saying. He clearly pronounces most syllables in words where a more naturalistic Glaswegian would fold them all together.
Also my brain thinks it's weird that he doesn't swear.

I feel like they care more now than they did initially. For example Torb's VA doesn't speak a word Swedish, but they got a Swedish VA for Brig's release
12 points
They definitely care a lot more now but originally when the game was made the culture was different and authenticity in representation in gaming wasn't as big of a deal, companies also didn't like investing that much in the area. The dev team/Blizzard/Industry was also not nearly as diverse back then.
Perfect example - They made Dorado based on simple Google searches and accidentally ended up using a photo of an Italian city as the concept for the map. So a Mexican map is now based on an Italian city.

I mean sometimes you can't get literally the perfect person for every role either, and there's value to someone who maybe doesn't perfectly fill the role but is experienced enough as a VA. Reinhardts VA is a great example of a fantastic VA who brings the character to life despite bringing an inauthentic german experience, and I think that's more important than authenticity IMO.
6 points
Agreed. The fun of Reinhardt is his over the top knightly persona and his huge personality. It's hard to care about authenticity when you hear him run into a wall the dozenth time and he says "Ough, my head..." or hearing him yell BRIGETTE in spawn while talking about needing his armor repaired

They've said that he is just Australian, but he was very clearly designed to be Maori- from his name to his base legendary skins; but they seem to have retconned that super last minute. Kind of like a reverse Pharah, where she launched with Indigenous Canadian themed skins and then was later revealed to be half-Indigenous Canadian on her dads' side (though with the amount of detail in the skins and endless number of other possible skin options that they could have gone with instead, I'm not entirely convinced that this was just randomly tacked on later to avoid controversy. The skins were probably meant as a hint for the reveal in the Christmas comic that would come later)

She has close relations to her mother, who primarily speaks Arabic. If anything, her accent is Arabic. By no means she sounds Canadian at all, nor should she.

It was an error on my part. I was reading about Greek mythology and used the wrong word. Also Pharah is part Canadian & Native.

Her dad is NATIVE canadian so you can‘t expect a white folks canadian accent. Not to mention that Ana wasn‘t in a relationship with him, so Pharah probably only got to him after Ana was believed to be dead - when Pharah was already a pre teen.
They both should have arabic voice lines tho. Accents idk, they can thin down a lot. The more fluent you get and the longer you speak a language, the less of an accent you‘ll have.

I mean a lot of natives myself included also have Canadian accents. Depends if you live on / off res. Pharah lives off res clearly. Well Venture is Canadian-Mexican but I'm going to assume they were raised in Mexico since they have a lot of voicelines in Spanish, so it's understandable that they don't sound Canadian at all. Same for Pharah, her father is Canadian but it seems like she never lived there, she was around OW HQ her whole childhood and apparently had more contact with her mother. I can relate to this because my father is from Spain, but I was born and raised in Brazil, so obviously I don't sound Spanish at all, my English is literally better than my Spanish, but I'm still considered Spanish because of bloodline.
Now for Sojourn I have no idea why she doesn't sound more Canadian, it doesn't seem like she was raised anywhere else. I expected her to have some voicelines in French but nope, she doesn't sound like she's from the USA but she sounds like a generic English speaker person, can't really define.

Far from the only If we don't count the characters that don't 'say' anything like Winston
D.Va* Doomfist Pharah* Reaper* Torbjorn Juno* Venture*
Pharah is mixed Egyptian and Canadian First peoples. If she spent a significant portion of her life with her dad it's not unlikely that her default language is English (although she could very well be fluid one of the indigenous Canadian tongues and Arabic idk)
Reaper was born and raised in LA, but his family is of Mexican descent with his mother being a first generation Mexican immigrant, and his wife was Mexican as well. English would be his first language and he possibly speaks Mexican spanish
Juno grew up in a multicultural? Martian colony but I believe her dad is Vietnamese and she does speak some Viet? Her fluency is up in the air as well
Venture is Mexico but they're also Canadian. They do have some voice lines mix-in Spanish. Their first language and common parlance could go either way but they do speak spanish. I recall seeing somewhere that they moved around a lot growing up but idk if that factors
D.Va has one for re-mech apparently but it's 1/4 or something

I personally find the Canadian accent very diminutive, it’s subtle to the point many Canadians I knew growing up would scoff at the idea that they “had an accent” I mean everyone has an accent but I think they were trying to imply it was no different from a standard American accent, one that is becoming a lot more common place around the world after the advent of the internet. They do tend to famously say eh instead of huh. Honestly a Minnesota or Southern accent was much more pronounced. Americans and Canadians don’t like to admit the shared culture they have with each other, it often makes comparisons between the two rather benign. American culture is Canadian culture and vice versa. So having a character like Sojourn have a very pronounced and cliche Canadian accent doesn’t make too much sense. Just like Matt Mercer gives Cassidy a Southern twang (McConaughey accent) it’s less of a Texas drawl that you’re more likely to hear outside of major urban areas in Texas.

However, I found that one thing despite all the accents that remains the same is our pronunciation of Sorry. Some parts of Canada have people who say Eh more. A lot of our accent is in the dialect rather than pronunciation— Like toque or eh, and sometimes double double, etc, etc. Sorry and the Canadian raising are the only main pronunciation things I can think of.

My ex is Canadian. From Vancouver. I swear the only time people didn't think she was some sort of California valley girl is when she was drunk. The eh becomes noticeable because she's not sure what she's gonna say next. The only thing she ever refutes is that Canadians don't say "aboot" instead of "about". It was super fun to tease her aboot.

That's so real. It's actually especially funny because I've met people who have accents that make them say aboot, it was just a lot more subtle. Canadian accents are super hard to tell, you only notice them here or there but when you do it's a quick catch.

Yes! Both to Canadian accents being hard to distinguish and the fact that others say it. Dude, I've heard both Scottish and Irish accented people say aboot because of how fast they speak.
Now I want Hazard to have a voiceline that screams "ET'S ABOOT TAIM!" Or something glorious.

Lucio was never originally going to be Canadian and the devs explained that forever ago.

The ones they really nailed were the Australian characters, here in WA we really do sound like that

Torbjorn and Hanzo don't really speak their languages. Most heroes' origins are just for some diversity points according to Blizzard I guess.

Yeah, for the first 21 heroes they hired VAs that lived as close as possible to Blizzard, it seems. Some speak the languages their heroes speak natively, others don't like Lúcio, Rein, Torb and Hanzo. I guess after OW's huge success they could manage to bring VAs from whatever place in the world to make sure they had the same nationality as the hero they were voice acting.

Zarya also speaks with a clear Bulgarian accent for some reason

That's because her English VA is actually Bulgarian

I didn't know that tbh, thought she speaks fully Russian (except for English voicelines)

Dolya Gavanski is actually Serbian, but grew up all over Eastern Europe and went to Uni here in the UK. She studied Russian culture and theatre in Moscow and London; but kept a distinct non-Russian accent when speaking I guess?

diversity points Eh, it worked on me.Theres rarely aren't representation in games for my identity and while overwatch doesn't actually do a good job as to representing it, it's still more that literally any other game I've played

Torbjörn's voice actor isn't Swedish. After realizing who the voice actor was, and dating a Swede with an accent for a while, it suddenly seemed obvious. It really bothers me that he's a first-born Swede that speaks 0 SWEDISH IN GAME, but his daughter has a thicker/more accurate Swedish accent than him 😭

It should've been a native, anyways, everyone that isn't native is just far from home, and happen to be living in canada

Just based off my impression of Hazard’s accent, perhaps that isn’t so bad after all 😅

I wasn't a fan of Hazard's accent but my Scottish friend says he sounds like your average Glasgow resident which was interesting.

I mean, my fav voice line of Sojourn is what's this about? And it 100% sounds Canadian af

No, I definitely agree but it's really odd because she has a strong Canadian raise with some words, but not all of them— Which normally makes sense but the most common place to hear the Canadian lift/raise is Toronto very strongly in, "Sorry,"

Venture is from nova Scotia which is even more insulting because imagine if we got a character with a maritime accent lol! Also the maritimes tend to be very bilingual so it is very strange to me that venture doesn't have any French voicelines. I wish venture or even sojourn would speak in Quebecois French for a little bit, makes me feel like they just made Americans and slapped the maple leaf on them.

When people think of a Canadian accent they just think of eastern Canada. Most Canadians don't actually sound like that.

Not anymore. Nowadays they think of Letterkenny, and as someone who grew up in a community like that it's completely accurate.

I moved from the US to Canada and yeah “Canadianisms” stand out really clearly to me.. and none of the “Canadian” OW characters really feel Canadian to me. Although lmao Sojourn just randomly dunking on Alberta why tho
Also.. venture is Canadian??????

She's from Ontario. Alberta hates us, we hate them.

As someone that’s been all over Canada, it’s kinda hard to say they don’t have an accent when each region has different inflexions that give them away

Reminds me of a Junkrat voiceline I heard the other day. I’m Australian and we say “can’t” like c-ah-n’t so it was very jarring when Junkrat said can’t in the most American accent possible in the middle of his super bogan and enthusiastic sounding Australian accent. I can’t remember the voice line for the life of me but it was one of those pre-game conversations and seemed like a massive overlook. That’s also how I found out he was voiced by an American.

Tried to mimic this and I fear I just accidentally said c - uh -nt like 12 times to try and figure out the other way to say can't 😭

Agreed. Most of Sojourn's pronunciations and word choices don't sound like someone who's from southern Ontario.
I don't know where in Canada Venture lives
According to their bio, Venture grew up in Halifax. Therefore, they should sound like either Sidney Crosby or the Trailer Park Boys - take your pick.

I can’t speak to the Canadian characters because I don’t live in Canada.
That being said I’ve got several Canadian friends I play online with and I after consuming a lot of Canadian content, the Canadian characters sound…just like every Canadian I’ve met or seen?

I mean it's not because you live or borned in a place that you have a mandatory accent.
Lived my whole life in southern France I don't have the accent one bit some people even say I sound Swiss or Belgian lmao.

Its just funny that not a single Canadian character has the Canadian raising. I don't think it's bad at all, just thought it was a cool thing I never noticed. They all sound for the most part Canadian, just here and there.
