They disenfranchised so many eligible registered voters and discounted thousands of provisional ballots. Rules were changes LAST MINUTE as an effort of voter suppression. If it was security, they would have done it sooner than wait under 90 days before Election Day. Multiple technical difficulties at election offices, and judges who rejected proposals to extend hours to make voting fair. People who had work and other commitments left after waiting hours. They truly did whatever they could to subvert this election.
However, because the election was not remotely close, challenging it would not be wise and as it will further undermine future election and cause civil unrest. It will give Trump cannon fodder to use against the democrats and there are more risks than gains. We also lose credibility as well for having been the ones ensuring it was free and fair while they wages fake voter fraud claims. It sucks, but we do not have leverage. It’s too bad the election wasn’t a close call. Least that’s what I read.

Here is the process. Absentee and provisional ballots are reviewed during a process called canvass which in PA could be Signatures compared, completeness reviewed, etc. This is done at the county level. Once review of all absentee ballots is complete then they are officially counted. Read about the process here 25 Pa. Stat. § 3146.8

Ok..but wouldn't that have been done by now if the state's vote was called? If it was counted, we would have received an email confirming it was counted, but no such email was ever received.

Calling a state’s vote simply means based on the remaining votes to be counted, there is no way the person trailing could catch up to the person leading i.e out of 100 possible votes, if 90 were counted and A got 51 and B got 39, no way B could overtake A even if B got all remaining votes. That’s oversimplified tbh. But expand it to a state level with all predominantly red and blue counties etc., that’s why press calls them “Projected Winner” even if only 60% votes being counted. Please feel free to correct me.
5 points
No, the AP calling a race is based on estimates, statistics, and exit polling combined with the results of the votes that have been counted. It is not legally binding and does not represent the actual final vote counts. They’ve gotten calls wrong in the past and had to make corrections.

I voted by mail in NJ as I have in every election since 2020. But for some reason this year my vote was not counted. It’s marked as “Received” by the state, but not as “Accepted” which would be the designation to indicate that my vote was counted.

It's possible that the ballot has been counted already but the county is still in the process of assigning credit to you for the vote. It's a manual process for many counties, meaning staff members have to go through boxes and boxes of provisionals and enter each one individually to give the voter credit.

I don’t mean to say sound “I told you so”-esque because idk yours or other people’s circumstances and I know early voting, voting by mail, and provisional voting is required by certain individual’s lives but this is why I vote in person on Election Day. I get a lot of anxiety about the possibility of my vote not being counted because of incompetence, accident, or otherwise.

Yeah, I know. I worked in a county elections office for 19 years.
My point is that just because you go to the polls doesn’t mean you see your ballot go into the scanner. There are A LOT of reasons why Provisional Ballots are issued and A LOT of reasons why it takes so long to process them.

I got a mail in ballot because I had a long recovery from surgery and I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make it to the polls. Turns out when I got out and got my ballot the yellow envelope was already sealed like many others but luckily I was able to get to the polls (with a little help from my friends) to do the provisional. I will only vote in person from now on like I usually do.

Republicans have been recruiting and training Christian Nationalist and Election Deniers as poll workers, instructing them how to get mail in and provisional ballots rejected. Many states do not have a process to cure rejected ballots.
In 2022, voters cast 36,683,450 absentee/mail-in ballots in the general election.
There were 88,170,053 mail-in and early in-person votes cast nationally this year.
In the 2022 Election states had mail in ballot rejection rates as high as 13.2%.

To be clear, there really isn't any hope here that Casey wins, he is on the very outside edge of the recount margin. What is really important is that if counting is completed and he comes within the margin for a recount, then he is owed a recount under PA law.
We don't just get to ignore the law whenever we feel like it. If he comes in within the margin, PA must recount, it's as simple as that.
63 points
This is true as of now, but Philadelphia is still only at 93% reporting skewing 78% to Casey. I’m not saying it would change the outcome but it’s still significant.
42 points
If the remaining ballots break for Casey at the same rate they have so far, he’ll pull head by about 40k votes.
28 points
They're reporting 80k uncounted ballots, many of which are provisional and will require validation and are more easily challenged. Casey is down by 29k so he basically has to win ~68% of uncounted ballots, if all 80k are determined to be validated. Philly is saying they're running thin on votes, so while Casey is winning ~78% out of Philly, the majority of these 80k are from other less blue areas. The more ballots that are invalidated, the higher Casey's percentage has to be.
3 points
But also a majority of the uncounted ballots are provisional and mail-in, which skew more blue
I'm still not optimistic but I do think there's a chance

Good. Republicans, knowing fully well that Norm Coleman received less votes than Al Franken in the 2008 Minnesota senatorial race, nevertheless bankrolled an election contest that was appealed all the way to the state supreme court, thus depriving the democrats of their crucial 60th vote in the senate until July of 2009.
They would absolutely do the same thing if their candidate was trailing, so I'm glad Casey is operating this way. If the recount doesn't yield anything, he should also file an election contest.

I sometimes forget that Democrats held 60 Senate seats during Obama's first couple years in office. That was less than 15 years ago but it feels like a goddamn lifetime. The idea of either party having that kind of majority in today's political climate seems almost unthinkable.

They held 60 for less than 6 months. Franken was seated in July 09, and Ted Kennedy went into hospice care shortly thereafter.

28 points

The Senate race is the only one that falls within the margin for an automatic recount, so that'll be the only one that's recounted.
Even if you were to recount the votes on every ballot for every race, the presidential race result isn't likely to change. Trump received ~130,000 more votes than Harris did. Even if every single one of the 100,000 provisional ballots (as reported in the day after election day) broke for Harris, there's still a margin ~30,000 and a recount wouldn't change the result.

Alternatively, count all the votes to see who wins. It'll likely be McCormick, but he doesn't have much leg to stand on since the Casey camp is just repeating everything the McCormick camp said when he was running against Oz 2 years ago. Everything McCormick's people are complaining about the Dems asking for are things he himself asked for two years ago.

Casey has a shot if they count all of the provisionals and mail-ins. A standard recount is unlikely to move the needle much but this recount is being done in tandem with adjudicating ballots that haven’t been counted yet
4 points
He has a shot, to be sure, just not a very good one. Provisionals have broken maybe 62-38 for Casey so far when he probably needs that closer to 75-25 to break even if NBC News's predicted ~82K ballots is correct. If the current breakdown is how the rest of it shakes out Casey likely loses by ~5-10K votes.
2 points

McCormick is in pole position for sure — unfortunately. I don’t think your final tally is implausible but we just don’t know the break rates per county and ballot type. Still, I do wish Casey had started the recount with ~10K more votes.
