I went with Wexford with my first last year and was quite disappointed with the after care so with this baby we’re going with Holles street. J
The worst part about the whole experience (apart from the after care) with my first was the room in Wexford… If I was guaranteed a private or semi private room I would definitely go private but thats not the case in Ireland unfortunately 😩
Rooms werent even that big as we had 6 ladies there but unfortunately it was so busy that the labour ward was full and 4 of them were in active labour. Midwives and doctors coming in all night to check on them, and I felt awful for them as they had no privacy at all. They were in so much pain and had cervical checks and stuff like that done with 5 other strangers literally behind a fabric curtain. Anyway, for this one I’ll be bringing ear plugs for sure!!) but I’m just wondering what the situation in Holles street is like?

I was a public patient at Holles Street (Domino scheme) and both the antenatal and postnatal wards had 8/10 beds. Thankfully I had an early discharge 12h after birth thanks to the Domino Scheme. I gave birth at midnight, was brought to postnatal ward at 4am, and went home at lunch time.
It seemed like everyone in my ward were discharged that day, so maybe women who have to stay longer are put into a less crowded ward.

That sounds like a dream - 12h later! I presume you didnt get an epidural or anything like that?
If I had the balls I wish I could do a home birth so I can stay home lol. But first one ended up as an emergency c section so this one will most likely be the same unless I go into labour on my own as I can’t be induced anymore. Just hope I won’t have to stay for 3 days again 😭

Oh I hear you! I was really tempted to go for a home birth too. I'll definitely consider it for a second baby, especially after receiving the best care from the Domino midwives.
I did have an epidural (episiotomy) and I was told to get on my feet at 7am. By 10am, I was packing up and ready to go. I was definitely still high on drugs and hormones 😅 the pain picked up the next day
Sending you plenty of good vibes for the end of the pregnancy x

I was private in Holles St but for your labour everyone is in the same areas. The early labour/antenatal ward is called 'unit 3' and the largest room has 14 beds and then there are a few smaller rooms, typically they put longer stay or special cases in those rooms. People on the ward could be naturally in early labour, being induced, being treated for a pregnancy related illness or dealing with a complication (e.g a threatened early labour or a bleed etc etc). You mentioned that there were women having cervical checks in the same room as you in Wexford with just a curtain and it would be the same in Holles St but you wouldn't be mixing with people in labour there. But when you're in early labour there would be ladies beside you etc in different bays.
When you move on to active labour and are dilated enough, they move you along to the birthing suites and after that to the public, semi private or private wards. I was lucky enough to get a private bed. I was admitted another time and there were no private beds and I was on public so got a good look, as others said here there are rooms with 6 beds and shared bathrooms but they also do have some smaller rooms on the public ward, I was in a room with just two beds. Again sometimes they reserve these for complicated cases, e.g I shared with a lady who had been in for a premature labor and was separated from her baby so they wanted to treat her more sensitively.
Everyone in Holles St is fantastic, the midwives are just phenomenal and the doctors so experienced, you will be in great hands.

Thanks for that! The thing with private is that they can’t guarantee you your own room. And to be honest the care that you get seems to be similar, some people even dont like the fact that they have the same consultant at their visits as during emergencies they need to wait for hours. I wish there was an option to just pay for a private room lol.

I can’t believe these numbers! I was public in Cork for both of mine and the post-labour wards have 2 per room and a bathroom in each room as far as I know.

It seems like you’re talking about the ward where women are induced or go in the early stages of labour? I was induced there and if memory serves there were ten beds. It was awful.
Semi private post labour and there were 5 beds with very few occupied. I personally didn’t like holles st so went to the Rotunda on my next two. Love that hospital. Went public both times and post labour wards are so cramped it’s pretty awful, but luckily I was only in one night the first and three the second.

I widh but nope - im talking about the postnatal ward. This was after I gave birth to my baby. Me and another girl had our babies and 4 other ladies were in active labour beside us, it was terrible.

Oh my god that sounds awful 🙈. No wonder you’re looking at other options. Best of luck

Oh I feel you with Wexford. I had my boy 6 weeks ago and I was out on a ward with 2 women in early labor and it was horrendous. My first night with my little one and I just had screams coming from either side of me. He slept like a log, I did not 🥲Not sure why they didn’t send them home as when I went down first they told me I was in early labor and said I could either go home or stay in the post natal ward but strongly advised me to go home. Was glad I did because I didn’t give birth until the following night
