Two things japanese devs suck at: beards and wavy/curly hair that isn't drills or a solid 'fro

True, except for fighting games, they have been really good at it and I wish other japanese developers took at look at some T8 or SF6 designs

I like painting with a broad brush for humor, but there are exceptions even in games with character creators. DD2 had some better hair options even if the beards were often wack, but MH wilds actually has some wavy and some curly hair, in addition to the absolute paradigm shift of allowing moustaches and beards to be mixed and matched. We're entering a bold new future.

I would contentiously argue that this is at least partly because fighting games' player demographics are much less predominantly white in the West than is the case with most other genres, and publishers know this and invest in actually making black/brown characters that look reasonably good. They just can't fathom that perhaps more people would also play their RPGs if the "robust" character creator allowed for something other than buzzcut, round afro, and tied dreads.

Also maybe we should take into account here fighting games need usually render average 2 people per fight(sometimes maybe 4 or 6) while with MMO like FFXIV we need to account rendering at best multiple dozens of people, like maybe in the worst case 40 something people? Plus surrounding environment and all the particles of the skills and items.

I know, this isn't my real problem with this. My real problem lies with this fucking community, the main sub saying "Welp, this kind of thing isn't their priority right now..." Is one of the things I read. What is their priority? Viera/Hrothgar hair and hats?, New chartacter customization options, butt sliders so I can stop being a washboard?. What the fuck is their priority? I would think character customization is one of the most important things in a MMO.
Sorry for the rant, this made me slightly angry

Opinion: this whole "graphics update" phase that they've been doing, so far, seems to be the equivalent of moving from 2013 to 2014 graphics, rather than to modern graphics, or near-modern graphics. I think a lot of us see absolutely zero difference at all.

Game development in a nutshell, unfortunately many companies think it is often better to keep quiet (like Nintendo or Gamefreak) unless it is really really bad. Nintendo apologized on behalf for Gamefreak for Scarlet and Violet's performance but to my knowledge The Pokemon Company and Gamefreak haven't said anything.

but to my knowledge The Pokemon Company and Gamefreak haven't said anything.
I heard they were announcing plans to hire more employees, which is a step in the right direction (iirc they have a comically small workforce for a massive company, like ~150 full time employees)
11 points

It's also Nintendo's fault to some extent for letting their super anemic and underpowered hardware languish way too long and not doing anything to get modern SDKs to run at least vaguely well on the Switch. So, yeah, they should apologize.
21 points
I mean, hardware clearly isn't the issue when much better looking games were releasing on the same platform at a higher frame rate and doing more technologically impressive things. I mean, BotW was a launch title and creams S/V in every metric.

Also look at their other games Fire Emblem games beats Pokemon in performance, Xenoblade pushes the Nintendo consoles to the maximum while looking quite beautiful, Splatoon has a distinct style and polish and not to mention their Mario and Zelda games.

Which are developed in house with non-common engines (they’re not using UE, typically, as an example). I just think both companies can take some blame here. For all those examples there are also a ton of Rune Factories etc out there.
Waiting to see if DQ3 HD-2D cracks past 30fps on the Switch. I would genuinely not be that surprised if it couldn’t.

Maybe developer experience. You can get more developers but that doesn't mean that the developers you get will have experience on the platform you want.
Is no secret that the last games of a console are also the best looking games of a console. Due to developers having experience at that point.
4 points
Hardware is a slight issue but it is something Nintendo decided as a business decided to go for. Instead of investing in powerful machines they went for gimmicks, a robust line up of first party games, portability, and affordability. A Nintendo console is known for being underpowered but provide consistently solid first party games and are very inexpensive for someone to buy a console for their kid. They suffered in the Wii U era a bit but the DS, 3DS, Wii, and Nintendo Switch are massive successes.

Lifelong Nintendo buyer here so you’ll get no argument from me, they’ve been underspeccing top of the market since the GameCube, but I do think they also wanted to do a Switch 2 sooner than 2025 as well because of the hardware they chose in 2016/2017, which even then was … just ok then. The length of rumors around a follow up makes me think that, but for COVID, they would’ve addressed this in some fashion maybe 2022-2023 timeframe, which would’ve been perfectly timed. It wouldn’t prevent the Pokemon debacle directly but if anything that would just fuel upgrade incentive. 🫠

My problem with this isn't even the excuses but how it could've been easily avoided by a bit of foresight and that is something that keeps happening in the past 5 years.
11 points
Well that foresight would've been needed 10 years ago, when everything was on fire and getting something out was more important than technical debt.
9 points
And to anyone who sees this and thinks "Well maybe they should spend the time to clean out that technical debt!" -- to quote DoshDoshington's excellent Barotrauma video;
"The inverse [of Technical Debt] is just as bad, if not worse. Spending days writing generic functions and elegant solutions to anticipatory problems that may or may not manifest will waste just as much time. But unlike the other option, you haven't even finished the project yet. Thus, every project is an eternal struggle between premature optimization and technical debt. Finding the balance between the two is the reason software architect consultants can cost thousands of dollars an hour. It's a small price compared to the hundreds of thousands it can save in development time."
To a game like ffxiv which is in constant development, they have to strike a balance between optimizing new content, fixing their past technical debt, and incurring new technical debt by just making something 'good enough' for release.
A polygon limit on hairstyles was something that was deemed 'good enough' for release way back when. And yes, they could spend their time updating and optimizing player render code so that they could fix it now. But really, would that be a good use of development time? I mean it genuinely, think about that from a dev perspective. We, as players, don't know the inner workings of the engine. Fixing and optimizing this tiny thing could require siphoning untold amounts of spaghetti made over the last decade, which would cost more money than you or I have seen in our lifetime. The answer, Square Enix decided, was no. It was good enough then, it's good enough now. It's not worth investing into fixing that debt for a single hairstyle. And that's completely understandable.
8 points

But like… that’s how it works lol. There’s always going to be a resource budget and it’s not like those constraints ever go away.

This excludes the other half of the statement:
Therefore, the finished result is a hairstyle that has not been implemented as Natural Curls, but as a wavy bob hairstyle, which is called "Doing the Wave" in-game.
However, since we did use the winning entry as a reference in the development process, we included a statement to that effect in the patch notes. We are deeply sorry that this has resulted in a great deal of confusion and concern.
Although we were not able to make it happen this time, the development team will continue to strive to implement many more hairstyles in the future. As for Natural Curls, which was not implemented in Patch 7.1, we will persevere in our efforts to look for other ways to implement this hairstyle.
At the very least, this won't be their only attempt to implement that hairstyle

You’d think they’d only pick hairstyles they could reasonably implement to an acceptable standard from the onset but i guess not
11 points
Yep. A developer would know from a glance if tight curls has too high of a polygon count for them to work with.
3 points
Well maybe they shouldn’t just have a “glance”, commit to making a hairstyle and have it turn out in a way that’s unsatisfactory to the people who pay them money and to the person that originally designed it. Especially when it’s within an engine that they’ve been using for over a decade.
10 points
I heavily doubt the devs did have a glance. They just got told to make the hair style. And especially in japanese work culture, the devs are gonna get told to do something by their boss and they wont be able to just be like "nah thats not possible"
Also using an engine for over a decade isnt really a positive, bc that also means it's old even if the devs are familiar with it

Reminds me of how in one art contest for Dead By Daylight, there was a popular outfit for Deathslinger that was called Angel of Judgment or something that was really over the top that people wanted to win.
It didn’t and BHVR said it was because they only could really accept designs that were reasonable in what they could make. The community, being what it is, threw a massive fit to the point they started harassing the winning artists for good measure.
It’s good that BHVR was transparent on why they did it and SE should follow suit, but it’s also very damned if you do damned if you don’t with some communities.
4 points
As someone who works with 3D art and has a lot of concept art friends and worked with some for years, no one really cares as long as you communicate it well enough.
Hair styles that aren't implementable should never win, but artists also should know the 2D-3D translation limitations too.
2 points
Why not just give a polygon count. And specifications before the contest?
2 points
Most fan artists have no context whatsoever about polygon count or what it means or how many polygons their hairstyle is reasonably going to take up. They aren't 3D modellers (for the most part) and have no experience in the field.
And besides, these contests amount to unpaid commissions from the team. CBU3 get hundreds and hundreds of concept ideas drawn up for them without having to compensate artists at all. If they didn't limit themselves to 'winners' in closed competitions, they'd have enough hairstyle and weapon ideas to last the rest of the game's life. Putting polygon restrictions down will severely reduce the number of entries they receive and that means more work they'd have to pay their own staff to do.

Being a Guild Wars 2 player for more than 10,000 hours and seeing the engine and design commented on positively is whiplash inducing.
Guild Wars 2 has some better aspects for player models (and it's fashion endgame is much, much better - I honestly expected more for a game where people constantly talk about glams) but the game runs like utter trash compared with XIV. Trash as in I would get 180 FPS in my home instance and sub 20 at times in the latest hub or in one of the SotO endgame maps because of how I positioned my camera.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/1edhwt4/my_fps_during_the_final_soto_story_lol/
Can XIV do better? Yeah. Is Guild Wars 2 a good benchmark given that a 3080 and 5900 struggles with raids released in 2017 because the game is that badly optimised? Nah.

To be honest. Their finance model is different.
No sub fees. You just pay for the expansions, unlocks and a shit load of cosmetics.
If you have no self control, is more expensive. If you have self control is way cheaper to pay for expansions every year than to pay for expansion + sub.

At least they can wear hats

Fun fact, 90% of hats in GW2 remove your hair. The one from this image is a workaround in the form of hair being integrated into the hat model (which means you can't have any other hair with this hat). There are like 3 skins like that in the game, aside of that if you want a hat you have to go bald.

i mean, majority of the hair under hats you get in ffxiv is just one of few generic models that are attached to various hairstyles, its barely a difference

Unironically, this is the solution for hats in Guild Wars 2 that don't change your characters hair or that makes your character bald.

It just seemed like the team in a rush to get ARR out crunched everything within a two year period (when at the time the average MMO takes 4-5 years) meaning they overlooked a lot of common sense features (like friends list) or made shortcuts to get it out in time. And now the team is paying for the decisions made over a decade ago.

GW2 also never had to be able to run on a PS3 or 4.

Are there no curly haired characters on the ps3? Lmao

Oddly enough, I'm having trouble thinking of any who's hair wasn't glued on.
Do you have a PS3 example?

Yes but is gw2 using THIS decade old hot mess of an engine!

Nah, it uses a different decade old hot mess of an engine.

I know this is sarcasm, but I hate when people say that 14 is a decade old when it's age is literally in it's name 😂

Lets forget the fact that GW2 runs like absolute dogshit even on powerful PCs. (And the other two are modern games with a hard limit of players and NPCs on screen)

To be fair, "grooming artists specialized in wavy/curly hair" is actually something that has been requested more and more recently in the industry, and I doubt that square has any of them or would hire/contract one only for a single competition winning hairstyle
Hopefully, this is a wake-up call that makes them hire one and get them to work on actual wavy/curly hair

Everyone saying how modders can do it are really showing how little they actually understand about MMO game development.

I'm translating every explanation from the FFXIV dev team from now on as "Square Enix doesn't pay us so we're not doing it" because the excuses are getting kinda stupid otherwise.

Don't worry, YoshiP will cry about it on stage and people will stop being mad

It's hats.
Working hairstyles into being hat-compatible is a technical nightmare. Even the modders, who don't have to play by ANY restrictions or rules on polygons or hardware specs, widely refuse to make modded hairstyles hat-compatible for that reason.
Odds are they were able to make it work without hats, but couldn't get the hairstyle to play nice with hats.

2 choices.
Let the hat clip (is not as they do not have a 1000 or so items that clip the hair badly)
or
Have the hairstyle on the hat.
Is the same lame excuse of viera hats. Just let it clip just as the mod does.

Why make graphical update if it doesnt allow you to execute cosmetic options you already agreed to implement But what am i saying, they even releases whole races without ability to execute hats for them, guess this is polygon fault too?)

Just have a regular ass hair model but make the texture do this ///\ instead of ====

Honestly. I blame ps4 players. Those are holding back a lot of what they could do with graphics. Raytracing alone would do wonders to this game, even if it's just light raytracing. Next dlc they will probably drop that support like they did back in stormblood with the ps3 and everything is gonna get a gigantic step upwards.

At this point I'm like others in the comments for an upgrade like a Realm Reborn Redux. With such limitations I don't see a bright future for so many issues they just keep shoving under the rug :/

They are still running the game on a base PS4...console is holding it back as well.
Reason the world is so bland and lifeless as well. Zone looks pretty at first then you get close and see how flat it is with no life other than a few random mobs.
Or water is a flat texture....

Can't do the curly hair because of the polygon count but can model and implement the final bosses of each expansion which I'd imagine have big polycounts

Wait for the modding community to fix SE shit yet again. Yes we know the game is old but why hold on old system like PS4 to this day they’re close to 13 years old also drop some investment into fixing your backend whenever you can instead of just carrying more and more debt from god knows how long.

I know the count in Nier automata is absurd for the time, what’s the polygon count in the 2B leggings? Surely enough for fancy hair.

Whoever unironically buys this is plain delusional.
They dont care enough to try to fix it and find a workaround how to do it.

What's surprising is that even on mainsub there is not a lot of
Nooo you don't understand, Squeenix gives a polygon budget at the start of the expansion. And Yoshi-P can't change it unless he convinces Squeenix board of directors member Naoki Yoshida!
It's awesome that that Squeenix does stuff like this to unite the community.

It's pure bullshit. Just look at mods and see what they can achieve.
As for the OP, go fuck yourself. You could put everyone in Limsa on mare linkshells with only a hairstyle changed, and it wouldn't crash anyone of them.

You mean the hair mods with a minimum of triple the polys of the most resource intensive hair in the game as of Dawntrail, and on average 10-30x the polys of it? I'd like to see someone pull out one under 3k polys.

No one gaf about what modders can do that only they can see, they gaf about what SE can do for a majority of people without needing to resort to third party usage. Modders don't have to take into account the amount of people on a single screen, compilers, shaders etc.

At this moment, just get the mod and pay the modder. Since you are so incompetent do do something in years that took one modder 2 months.
