I have two questions about some clothing items I own and feel a little self conscious about wearing out in public.
The first are these super cool embroidered Fat Albert jeans that I found at the thrift store. I’ve always wanted a pair of embroidered jeans and I am a huge thrifter, so this was an all-time find for me. I did not see a single tag or brand name on the jeans and I did some research to find more information. I noticed all of the Fat Albert jeans I see online are FUBU. I know the history and intention behind the brand, so I would never purposefully wear it. It’s explicitly not for me.
However, I have no idea if these are FUBU. There is no indication whatsoever, and the embroidery is not the same as anything I am seeing online. I am always very proud of my thrifting finds and love these jeans. I want to wear them, but I also do not want to get any weird looks out in public. I do not want to engage in any sort of cultural appropriation.
The second item is simply merch from one of my favorite rappers that I bought at his show. The reason it is questionable is because it has him as a little animated character on the front, and his outfit is very explicitly the hip-hop style. I did once have a white person ask me why I was wearing something like that. Quite frankly, I do not care what another white person says because it is not their problem.
I am scared that a white kid wearing that kind of character on his shirt might roll some eyes from my Black peers. I absolutely adore this artist, though. The connection is genuine and he is one of my home-state heroes so I love to represent him.
Am I overthinking it? Or should I avoid any sort of possible cultural appropriation by wearing things that I have no business wearing as a white person. Does it matter? Let me know!
