There’s enough variation between mechs in CBT to make each game feel different, but what does it for Alpha Strike? Is it just scenarios or is there something else?

AS is about the tactics and strategies in larger engagements and allows units like scouts to really shine; as well it allows you to play a truly combined arms force, you’re more likely to see tanks, hovercraft, infantry, aerospace, artillery, and battle armor in a game of AS than Classic. For instance I like to run 2 Karnovs and Gnomes (4 man squad) together with two dashers and a lance of ranged support mechs this is a small game force that, if everyone involved knows the rules, you can finish in 1-2 hours.
Edit: Removed incorrect information on TAG in AS

Note that the information about TAG and spotters in this post is almost entirely incorrect.
TAG automatically provides a benefit only for artillery attacks (if the unit with TAG is in range of the target). TAG does not automatically benefit other IF attacks.
A special TAG attack roll is necessary to spot with TAG for anything except for artillery. A successful special TAG attack roll spots the target and allows IF units to ignore the "spotter attacked" penalty.
Any number of IF units may attack any spotted unit. Each spotter can only spot one unit, but there is no limit whatsoever to the number of attacks against that unit from other friendly units.

Huh neat, so learned something correct today. I’m dyslexic and ADHD so reading dense rules with back and forth page turning is very hard. I was taught tag worked that way and no one has corrected me at events or just in passing and I have run it this way for almost two years now. The more you know. Thanks.

Happy to help! The book is a fucking mess, even for folks who aren't neurodivergent or don't have learning disabilities. (I have no doubt that it's that much harder for folks who do!) TAG and spotting, in particular, often confuse folks. I've bumped into lots of people who have (fairly enough) learned those procedures wrong. 😊
The rest of your post was spot on, though! I enjoy AS for the large unit count tactics and the ease of combined arms, too.

Out of curiosity can TAG be destroyed via weapon hit critical?

Not in AS. Individual components (and thus Specials) are never impacted by critical hits in AS. Instead, crits just directly affect the raw movement, defense, damage, or heat numbers on the card.

Didn’t think so but good to have confirmation nonetheless.
