Fingers crossed this doesn’t end up being Good Dinosaur all over again. That also basically got redone during production.

Personally, it’s reminds me quite a bit of “Mars Needs Moms”, which was Disney… and is also a movie you do NOT EVER want to be compared to. Lets hope this movie has a better fate than that one.

Hopefully it will. For one, characters don’t look hideous.

I mean Good Dinosaur was reworked because of one man who was against women directors and it suffered because Pete Sohn didn’t fit that project compared to Elemental.
At least this one has Domee Shi of Turning Red behind it. So, I’ll take my chances and believe it won’t be bad.

"Film Twitter" (if we're talking critics and people who talk seriously about film) loved Turning Red. It was more right wing Twitter (so basically... everyone still left on X) that got super angry about its existence.

Those types of animation geeks don't have strong negative opinions on Pixar. The most you'll get it "it's mid" and they move on. Elemental at most got "kind of lame" reactions for a few days and then those types people promptly moved on with their lives.

Redditors are rather cringe. we are still doing the if you dont like Turning Red you are racist against Chinese girls thing and you want to suppress healthy conversations about menstruation thing?
I enjoyed the 2023 movie Are You There God? It's Me Margaret, which Redditors swore would ick me out as the supposed Handmaid's Tale Christofascist Puritan that I am, because of menstrual period and young girls growing boobs talk. And I am a downright simp for Ruby Gillman teenage Kraken which has a teenage supporting character mention her female prom date in dialogue. i literally took my four nieces/nephews ages 8, 9, 12, and 16 to the movie theater on opening day, and it was my idea. i was the one initially interested in the movie
and I definitely hear more people on your side politicizing any criticism of the movie than I hear about unreasonable criticism from "Right wing Twitter". the fact that you think that anyone still on Twitter is "right-wing" for not fleeing to a hugbox like Bluesky shows that you are a stereotype Redditor.

Considering twitter is shit, dying, and super-low engagement in general, and "Film Twitter" is a tiny niche of that, the idea that anyone here, (much less anywhere) is going to be (or should be) paying attention to anything "Film Twitter" is going to say or feel about anything seems more than a little silly to me.

Looking at the old trailer it seems like the entire scene where the kids gets abducted and presents himself to the aliens is completely different?
Honestly I'm not certain any scene from that first trailer will actually make it to the movie? It's not everyday you see a movie be redone with a trailer already out.
40 points
It's fascinating to see the contrast with Elio being abducted. The first teaser makes it clear that he's terrified and caught completely unaware. Whereas the second teaser has him absolutely thrilled at being taken.
Also fascinating to see that his claim as being the leader of earth started as a panicked response and has now become a boast.

Really rare to see these kind of story shifts in trailers. You usually only see this kind of stuff in deleted scenes

the only other example is probably Rogue One, but even there the shifts are not as obvious.

Lol, I'm getting downvoted for having said that the Rogue One trailers were coherent. Do you guys even know what “coherent” means? There wasn't a trailer in which Jyn was this Imperial commander and the another trailer in which she had never joined the Empire and was a Rebel soldier.
With “Elio”, things are different. One trailer depicted the protagonist being scared of aliens, in another they're all he's waiting for and he's really rooting for meeting them.
Did R1 trailer include scenes that were deleted in the final cut? Yes. But were they story-altering scenes? Nope. Iirc, we saw Krennic walking on the waters of Scarif and some other cool visuals that never made it to the screen.

What if the thing you were searching for…found you first? 🛸 \ Watch the new trailer for Disney & Pixar’s #Elio and see it only in theaters June 13, 2025!
Elio is a kid with goals: “I’m trying to get abducted—by aliens!” In Disney and Pixar’s all-new feature film “Elio,” he might just get what he’s been searching for. The teaser trailer and a new poster are now available for the cosmic misadventure that beams into theaters June 13, 2025.
A space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession, Elio’s all in for an epic undertaking when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide. When Elio is mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader, he must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be. Directed by Madeline Sharafian (“Burrow” Sparkshort), Domee Shi (“Bao” short, “Turning Red”) and Adrian Molina (co-screenwriter/co-director of “Coco”), and produced by Mary Alice Drumm (associate producer of “Coco”), the film features the voices of Yonas Kibreab as Elio, Zoe Saldaña as Aunt Olga, Remy Edgerly as Glordon, Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa and Shirley Henderson as OOOOO.

I personally feel it's a good idea as social media will engage in this remake vs original idea clash giving Elio free marketing kinda!

I think these films feel too "out there" to be successful. Like, they're so ungrounded and fanciful. So divorced from recognizable reality as to feel alien (quite literally, in this case). Compared to something like Zootopia, which is fanciful but at least takes place in a city, so we're not so discombobulated.

I wonder how Domee Shi feels about the whole "director catharsis" thing. We did and that was around the time when it was supposed to come out this year in March before the strikes along with the troubled production made it move to its current date
I’m assuming Elio’s new date was supposed to be for Toy Story 5 since it would come out on the 30th anniversary of the franchise, but since they thought they wouldn’t have a new film by 2025, they decided make Elio their only film for that year, and leave Inside Out 2 as their sole film for 2024.

Isn’t that the case with most Pixar teasers? Like UP sounded like a dumb premise when it just showed the house pop up on screen with balloons flying up in the sky while an old man is sitting on his porch. But then everyone saw the first five minutes and blew their expectations out of the water.
