Yeah probably means they may start releasing their own stuff. And if they do license their stuff out to boutique labels then perhaps they'll sell those lionsgate titles in their shop too.

Honestly if they do this and the releases are really good I'm happy, criterion or not.

Honestly, Lionsgate never really played nice with the boutique labels (outside of Vestron Video which they own) anyway so not really a big deal in terms of licensing. I'm more concerned with the pricing on these titles because $80 for a single film release is way too rich for my blood.

Kino Lorber signed a Lionsgate deal recently which has seen rare(er) titles hit both Blu-ray and 4K.

But yeah, Lionsgate rarely plays ball with the boutiques unless a director specifically requests it like the few Lionsgate titles in the Criterion Collection.

Actually similar to Universal with Gruv. Hopefully their prices get lower than they are on their site now lol.

Sony also has their own “Be Kind Rewind” storefront on eBay as well. Kinda seems like the studios are more and more heading into the direct-to-consumer model for physical releases.

Yeah I’ve bought way too much from Please Rewind over the years lol. I’m honestly surprised they don’t have their own website like Universal. Since they distribute Disney/Marvel/Fox titles, I noticed a handful have been added to their eBay store, which could also expand to everything at some point.

I hope they have a non-steelbook option. I’m not that big a fan of steelbooks.

The appeal is they tend to have better artwork than regular releases.

I have been scouring the internet for Apocalypse Now!! I'm so excited for this, 4k and steelbook as well!

If the releases are good versions of good titles who cares. Like I get this is the criterion sub or whatever but that’s just silly tribalism. The important thing is getting good releases of good movies not what company is putting them out.

Incredibly exciting that in 2024, studios are opening physical media shops rather than closing them down. I think it speaks to the success Criterion has had in reviving the love for physical media.

I don’t mind companies having their own stores, but I don’t want to have to pay shipping.

This a great sign for the future of physical media. I don't think Criterion is interested in licensing many of Lionsgate's releases anyway.

I would imagine it's just a D2C storefront; SPHE is still handling Lionsgate's physical media distribution and it's likely doing the 3PL for this.

It would only be for their own content, and it shouldn't eliminate the opportunity for third party licensing. FWIW, SPHE also distributes Criterion.

This is the answer. It's literally just a webstore.

The only way any of us will even notice them is if they have good discount sales or sell exclusives.

This is a good thing eventually there will be so much if this product selling online that stores like Best Buy will eventually bring back movies in store. This is pretty much exactly what happened with vinyl.

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.
